To consider a Mirena even though I'm petrified?

I feel like I either hear people saying it's the best thing they've done. Or the worst. So hoping to get a wider range of feedback.

I get bad ovulation pain and sore boobs. (Currently on my second Implant which is coming to an end)

I don't want to be without hormonal contraception as my periods are very heavy without.

Have given birth vaginally as I think that makes it easier. But my cervix is quite low.

I'm scared of the insertion process/pain and also the strings hanging out. Envy (not envy)

Got mine put in second time, first time abandoned as Dr couldn't get it in..my cervix went into spasm ? Wasn't sore at all either time tho
No periods and no cramp 2 years on, bliss! Odd bit of spotting especially after sex for some reason
So glad I have it as my heavy periods were awful

weegiemum · 20/02/2021 22:50

I loved mine.

Till I got pregnant on it!

Dd2 is 17 now and a fantastic part of our family, but still, not planned .

extentioncord · 20/02/2021 22:50

They make you cough et voilà....it's in!!!

I can't work out of this is a joke or not?

OP I have had 3 and they have all been easy to insert and absolute game changers in terms of seeing off my heavy bleeding. I haven't had a period for years

lalaandpo · 20/02/2021 22:53

For me it's been great, I had my first put in in 2012 and it took 6 months of slightly erratic bleeding and since then I've had no period to speak of that includes a mirena change in 2017.

I was warned that 6 months would be the magic number for when it all settles down.

MrsBungle · 20/02/2021 22:55

Love mine. It went in easily and I have a tilted cervix. Uncomfortable rather than painful but it’s only for a minute.

mootymoo · 20/02/2021 22:55

Insertion was fine, no pain relief needed in my case, strings aren't an issue, they trim them. Been fine, had mine over a year

wewillmeetagain · 20/02/2021 23:03

I have it. Insertion was absolutely fine, not painful. Ive bled constantly ( mostly spotting) since having it ( November) the doc says it can take up to 6 months for hormones to settle. However the horrifically heavy periods have stopped which is amazing. I do find my skin can play up a bit but nothing to bad just a few spots. Even if the spotting doesn't stop after six months I will keep it because id rather that than periods every 23 days that make me unable to work or go out for at least 2-3 days.

I unfortunately was the 1 in 1000. Mine perforated my uterus and ended up stuck in my left pelvic wall, I had to have surgery to get it removed. Very very very bad experience. However, I know lots of people who have one and love it.

ridingonaroomba · 20/02/2021 23:19

I fainted then vomited when getting mine in

therocinante · 20/02/2021 23:52

I love mine - no periods in 5 years, don't have to remember to take a pill. Insertion was painful but over very quickly and apart from maybe my hormonal acne getting worse (but it was already there anyway) I've noticed no side effects.

Mayzee · 21/02/2021 00:06

I got my first one 6 months ago at the age of 46 and don’t know why I didn’t do it years ago. Took 6 weeks to settle and now I have light period type bleeding every now and again but not the heavy period hell I had before. PMS symptoms have definitely lessened too. Delighted with it.

farandfew · 21/02/2021 00:14

I haven't read the full thread so I don't know if I'm repeating but...

I had mine after severe problems with bleeding, and it was honestly one of the best things I've ever done. I had to have it done under general anaesthetic because I had not had children at the time and my cervix was at an angle the couldn't get to. But even so, I had a blissful few years with the Mirena and I will be getting it as soon as I can when I'm done having kids.

Purplewithred · 21/02/2021 00:18

They were the best thing ever for me. I haven't had a period or pmt or any of the other crap since 1994. Now using my last one for hrt. First 6 weeks had spotting which was irritating but compared to 27 years of freedom that was a well worth it.

fabulousspider · 21/02/2021 00:20

amazing! life changing. A small amount of pain (nothing unbearable by any means) for a life free of periods!!!

DramaAlpaca · 21/02/2021 00:25

I loved mine. Had it put in (under GA so can't comment on insertion) during an uncomfortable perimenopause and it stopped my periods completely. I had no problems with it at all. I can comment on having it taken out - I didn't feel a thing, one quick pull by my GP and it was out.

ColdCottage · 21/02/2021 00:27

First coil was good until it fell out and I got pregnant. Second coil left me with pelvic pain for a year before I realised what was causing it. I still have pain on and off 2 years later after having another baby. I would avoid. I'm on Nuva ring now
