Quoted £9k for doors

diagold4u · 17/02/2021 18:19

I've attached photo.

How much do these pvc doors cost to have fitted and supplied?

We've had safestyle come out and quoted us 9k! Then came down to 5k.

We've had another company that came couple months ago and quoted 4K and eventually came down to £1750.

Am I right in thinking safestyle are taking the piss. And why the extortionate amount if you'll be coming down by thousands!

Both company have the free colour upgrade.

I'm not sure what your aibu actually is? Companies can charge what they like. It's up to you to decide what the best product for your money is.

However much the company quotes. You pick the quote that's best for you.

SarahLox77 · 17/02/2021 18:30

I wouldn't touch either company, given their excessive initial overpricing. Dishonest.

user1471548941 · 17/02/2021 18:30

I had a top quality composite door (usually double the price of PVC), around £1k supplied and fitted along with 4 x new windows for £3k.

BatshitCrazyWoman · 17/02/2021 18:32

OP go in Checkatrade and find a local company with excellent reviews. I found all the big companies were over-priced, and when I said so they always reduced the price. Also they always seemed to want my husband to be there 🙄

Find another company with excellent reviews.

ARoseDowntown · 17/02/2021 18:34

A Gucci dress will cost £6,000.

The primark rip-off would cost £16.

The first is overpriced.

The second is underpriced.

What kind of questions would “how much does this dress cost” be Confused

Make your own mind up, based on your research!

78percentLindt · 17/02/2021 18:35

£5 or 9K. Wow! We had an engineered timber front door, with the old stained glass removed from my old door, (replaced with hardboard for longer than expected thanks to Covid) cleaned, repaired and triple glazed for £4k last year.

Regularsizedrudy · 17/02/2021 18:37

I would expect it to be about 1k. I wonder if the arch above is adding to the cost??

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 17/02/2021 18:37

Jesus Christ!!! That’s sooo expensive, I don’t get why doors and window are so expensive, definitely give both companies a wide birth

78percentLindt · 17/02/2021 18:40

Oh, I see you want Patio doors, I agree with PP, ask around, find a local supplier, and composite rather than PVC.

Bexi3 · 17/02/2021 18:42

Don't use safe style. We were conned by them years ago and they have not been good windows or doors. We now use a local supplier who installs for all the local builders. They come highly recommended, don't subcontract to random people and if there is a problem send qualified fitters to inspect and rectify.

diagold4u · 17/02/2021 18:46

Thanks for the replies! Glad am not the only one that thinks the price is ludicrous. The option picked with safestyle is their most basic one which they quoted 9k for. Regardless of having glass window or no glass window, price is the same. If I then want patterned glass or frosted glass, and number on the glass, it's an additional charge.
I know composite doors don't even cost that much, so it's really ridiculous for pvc doors

Please don’t use Safestyle this is the sort of awful thing they do., they are an appalling company. You will expect to pay a bit more then average due to the arch but not 9k! Go onto the FENSA website and you can source a reputable local installer also We quoted a customer for a composite door which was 1800.00 Safestyle quoted 6,000.00 for the same door, with the usual “I’ll ask my manager if I can discount you ploy” when told others were quoting.

Iqqq · 17/02/2021 18:49
@Iqqq no actually that's not how it works 🙄
I think you'll find it is

OzziePopPop · 17/02/2021 18:49

Unfortunately that’s what safestyle do, plus the hours long ‘quote’ plus the million phone calls after. It’s awful, I had the misfortune of trying to get a quote from them 20 years ago and they haven’t changed at all.

I’d look for a decent local company and go for quality over price if you can.

chickadeeeeeeeee · 17/02/2021 18:52

We paid three thousand for a door way half that size, similar archway etc

Composite door + archway above & unusual size Wink

1Morewineplease · 17/02/2021 18:54

I'd use a more local supplier that is on a trade verification website, eg Checkatrade.
The price that you were quoted is extraordinarily high. Safe style like the other market leaders will wait a while then offer you a special discount, then wait a while and then offer you the very lowest special discount, only available to you. That lowest price will probably be higher or on a par with local fitters

Serin · 17/02/2021 19:02

Safe style did our entire house for 5k including
front and back doors and one set of French doors and 11 windows.
This was 20years ago, but the windows have been great, not one issue. They tried the daft sales tactics but we just told them that we had already had a quote for £5500 (we hadn't) and they undercut it.

sunflowersandbuttercups · 17/02/2021 19:06

It's expensive, but companies can charge whatever they like.

Many will over-charge if they don't really want to take a job. That way, if someone does accept the quote, they get what they feel is enough compensation for a pain-in-the-arse piece of work Grin

DonttouchthatLarry · 17/02/2021 19:12

I would never use a company that employs those tactics - if they reduce the price like that they were ripping you off in the first place. We had a lady come to quote for conservatory blinds - they started out at £11k (which was what the conservatory cost!) but she could do us a discount, then she rang her manager, then if we said yes today...final figure was around £4k if I remember correctly. Told her no thanks!

Try asking on your local Facebook group or Next Door for personal recommendations.

largeredwineplease · 17/02/2021 19:16

Don’t use safe style, I’ll echo what others have said and find a local company. Do you have any friends, family or neighbours you could get a recommendation from? My husband runs his own (very small) window and door company, he isn’t here to ask an estimate for the door but it’s curved at the top as well as having a curved top light so that would make it more than a regular shaped door and top light. The quote for £1,750 is definitely heading in the right direction, £9k or £5k is completely ridiculous, but get at least one other quote so you have a genuine comparison. If those companies are offering a free colour upgrade then they’re not pricing it in white, white upvc will always be cheaper so if that’s the colour you want make sure it’s priced for white. Someone else has already mentioned it but go on FENSA website for a recommendation if no one you know can give you one.

Mucklemore · 17/02/2021 19:18

Is it a standard arch? We've got a similar door and hardly any companies will touch it as it's a non standard arch.

I think ours will cost 3-4K. But that is to put the main door in the arch. We have those split doors at the moment and I hate them.

Timbucktime · 17/02/2021 19:19

Try a local independent company. Ideally not one from Checkatrade and the like as it’s well known that they pay to be on these sites and negative feedback isn’t published.
