Quoted £9k for doors

diagold4u · 17/02/2021 18:19

I've attached photo.

How much do these pvc doors cost to have fitted and supplied?

We've had safestyle come out and quoted us 9k! Then came down to 5k.

We've had another company that came couple months ago and quoted 4K and eventually came down to £1750.

Am I right in thinking safestyle are taking the piss. And why the extortionate amount if you'll be coming down by thousands!

Both company have the free colour upgrade.

It is exactly how it works!

"no actually that's not how it works 🙄"

Intrigued to know how you think it works 😂

Fwiw I wouldn't touch safestyle with a barge pole

Speakuptomakeyourselfheard · 17/02/2021 20:43

I rang Safestyle for a quote about 15 years ago, they were insistent that my husband should be there. I told them that as I was paying there was no earthly reason that my husband needed to be there, and if they continued to insist they could shove their windows where the sun don't shine, and put the phone down on them. They then got the 'manager' to call me back, but instead of grovelling and saying it was fine to see me on my own, she too started on about needing my husband there. Needless to say, I slammed the phone down, and went elsewhere, as having gone through the endless hours of "I'll talk to my manager and see if there's anything we can do', and then 'oh, we can reduce it by 'X' thousand quid, but you have to sign up tonight', when I was younger, I was wise to the fact that they didn't want me to have an excuse not to sign on the dotted line straight away. Another time when faced with this sort of sales tactic, I actually physically shoved the bloke out of my house, after having asked him to leave more than once. My husband was gobsmacked and just watched in surprise, but I'm not going to be bullied into spending my money or wasting my evening, just because I've enquired about a product. So like others have said, I now go to local builders, and if I don't know of anyone, I ask for recommendations on the local FaceBook group.

...have you never bought anything before!? This is exactly how it works! Things cost as much as the people selling them ask for.

Wanderlust20 · 17/02/2021 20:57

Some people are so sarky ha ha, of course YANBU - the company are the ones being unreasonable! Ridiculous.

And actually I don't buy the whole "they can charge what they like", I hate hearing of people (usually older) getting ripped off by companies like this, because they just take the price at face value Sad Happened to some elderly neighbours of mine when getting a new roof.

diagold4u · 17/02/2021 21:11

It's interesting that they insisted on having your husbands present. My dh made the calls and they insisted that I, the wife also be present. He asked why and they just said both home owners need to be present, to which my husband said, you don't know if it's just myself that owns the house or my wife alone owns it. They were refusing to come unless I was there too! My dh hung up on them, they later rang back and agreed to come without me needing to be there.

For the two posters on here who are clearly silly enough (and most likely employed by safestyle Grin) to think companies can charge what the hell they like, wake up and smell the coffee!! That's not how it works! If you want actual buyers of your product! You price it accordingly!! If there's a huge difference in price, there should be a reason for it not just because they felt like it!

jimmyhill · 17/02/2021 23:06

there's a huge difference in price, there should be a reason for it not just because they felt like it!

Two "reasons" for the price:

  1. Some people will be rich enough, daft enough, or vulnerable enough to pay the first price. And the salespeople work on commission
  1. As part of a negotiation technique called anchoring. Once you've been quoted £9k, £5k seems like a bargain
diagold4u · 17/02/2021 23:11

@jimmyhill point number 2, it does the opposite for some people, makes you wonder how on earth have you slashed thousands in a matter of minutes, can't have been worth what was initially quoted and now doubting the second offer

I always find it bizarre how expensive windows companies are. The prices are pretty steep even after "discount", but that quote is crazy.

smartiecake · 17/02/2021 23:23

We had window quotes 10 yrs ago. We had safestyle. Absolute joke. We could not get rid of the bloke. I hate all that bullshit talk of 'we will knock off x amount' blah blah. We could not wait for him to leave. Ridiculous quote anyway and we were not going to use them with the sales tactics they tried, so annoying. Then they kept calling and the man asked if I needed to speak to my husband!! Needless to say they didn't call again after my response to that. We ended up using a local window firm who were great. We have since moved house and now I tend to get recommendations from Facebook for tradespeople where you can get genuine reviews and then investigate them further.

womanity · 17/02/2021 23:23

£2-3k.

Try a local joiner instead. They’ll have a good, trusted supplier.

TheRogueApostrophe · 18/02/2021 07:16

You've already had some good advice but yes, the Fends website is a good place to start. Or ask on a local FB group. Weade enquiries with safestyle once. I genuinely don't know why because their adverts don't even make them look particularly professional. It was a terrible experience. I don't trust any company who try to push prospective buyers into signing on the day. A good company will leave a quote for consideration and even encourage you to obtain further quotes.

TheRogueApostrophe · 18/02/2021 07:16

Fensa 🙄

We've recently had 2 doors replaced and the 1750 sounds about right if you opt for a local independent fensa approved fitter. Though obviously more glass may be slightly more expensive and prices differ regionally.
Scarlettpixie · 18/02/2021 09:39

@SarahLox77

I wouldn't touch either company, given their excessive initial overpricing. Dishonest.
Me either.

I am generally not a fan of ‘price matching’. The company who charges a fair price at the outset is the one most likely to get my business.

That said there is always room for haggling but it usually would’t run to thousands! When we had a garage conversion, they agreed to add in extras for the quoted price. For other smaller jobs I usually ask them to knock a bit off and reckon they expect you to ask and factor it in.

DavidsSchitt · 19/02/2021 00:34

Yep. It's still exactly how it works and let's face it love, you're the one who has had safestyle sat in your living room. Now that's silly, they're rip off merchants....yet they're still in business

Fruitbatdancer · 19/02/2021 00:41

Yanbu. We had old skool patio doors replaced with fancy aluminium bifold ones. Everest’s starting point was 12k, the. 8k, then 6k then 4K.
Give it a week or so and they’ll call you with a special offer way lower!
While we’re discussing bastard companies we had sharps out, I told the bloke what I wanted, he’s sai”love I don’t think you can afford it” honestly I was too stunned to reply and made him do all the drawings quotes etc just so I could tell him to fuck off.

largeredwineplease · 19/02/2021 18:07

I’m shocked at the amount of people who use the big window companies. Although I shouldn’t be as some people have to be keeping them in business! They give double glazing a bad reputation. If a company insists your husband or wife has to be there for an appointment why would anyone still make that appointment? Please find a small local company to quote for you, they’ll send a quote to you and won’t pressure you to sign up and they won’t offer a ‘free colour upgrade’ they’ll just price for the colour you request. Even when the big companies drop their prices to something resembling reasonable I bet it’s still much more than a small company would charge. And it’s such a bizarre way of doing business, I’m so surprised people accept it.
