AIBU to still do this as an adult? (light hearted)

As a child if I had a soft boiled egg my DF told me to break the bottom of the shell when I'd finished it because otherwise "witches used the shell to row out to sea and wreck ships"! Obviously he wasn't being serious but AIBU that now decades later I STILL break the bottom every time? Am I the only one who does childish things as an adult?

I have never heard of this! I would probably still be doing it though, more of a tradition by now I imagine!

LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow · 17/02/2021 15:54

hell yes...you must do this,
I do it too, for fear of the EggWitches. And I make the children do it. they are all grown up now

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 17/02/2021 16:02

Oftlog another one. DH does this. Every time. And is teaching the children to Hmm

QuestionableMouse · 17/02/2021 16:04

My dad says the same thing but I've never heard anyone else say it.

I crush my eggshells out of habit 😁

Daleksatemyshed · 17/02/2021 16:04

@LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow how lovely that someone else does this! My DF was at sea for several years so I always took this very seriously.
Favourite one was a friend, his Gran said if you sneezed and some one said bless you, don't say thank you because it killed a fairy.

I've never heard that before but it's really sweet. I would do it too if I liked eggs.

I still sleep with my special blanket under my pillow. I am 48.

Daleksatemyshed · 17/02/2021 16:15

Blankets are always good friends, you know where you stand with a blanket

RubyandPearl · 17/02/2021 16:18

Exactly! My blanket has seen me through some tough times

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 17/02/2021 16:20

My Dad told me the same think and I too still break the shell. Are you from Yorkshire OP?

Daleksatemyshed · 17/02/2021 16:21

Ruby, that's very sweet of you, us blanket fans have to stick together

zippadeedoo · 17/02/2021 16:22

Yes I still do this - 'to let the witches out'. Now I've passed it onto my son 🙄

minipie · 17/02/2021 16:28

Nope. But I do salute magpies. I am otherwise a very rational sceptical sort of person so not sure why this one stuck.

NoCherryNoDeal · 17/02/2021 16:30

Y'all are cray cray Grin

Daleksatemyshed · 17/02/2021 16:32

@NoCherryNoDeal, who told you to say that- was it the witches?

OP posts:
mogloveseggs · 17/02/2021 16:35

Never heard of that one. But always thank you after bless you so not to kill a fairy. And salt over the left shoulder if you spill it to keep the devil away.

Biancadelrioisback · 17/02/2021 16:35

Oh god.

DS and I have soft boiled eggs and dippy soldiers every week and I've NEVER done this.
I am so sorry for making so many witch boats! Hope they haven't been too much of a nuisance!

Daleksatemyshed · 17/02/2021 16:42

@Ghoul, no I'm from the SE so maybe it's a sailor thing rather than regional.@Biancadelrioisback, I don't know what to say to you, all the mayhem you and your DS must have caused-when the RNLI come knocking on your door you'll be sorry

Meredithwho · 17/02/2021 16:42

Someone on radio 1 was saying they did the other day! Definitely not alone

clary · 17/02/2021 16:45

I salute magpies, unless I see a pair, then it's fine.

It's daft really and I am not superstitious at all (walk under ladders, wouldn't mind living at number 13). I think it's bc my dad did it.

Eckhart · 17/02/2021 16:48

It's bad luck to be superstitious...

startedearlytookmycats · 17/02/2021 16:51

I've always done this and not from a seafaring family so no idea where the tradition has come from!! Got to keep on top of those darn witches though.

iklboo · 17/02/2021 16:54

I can't be the only one watching Richard Osman's House Of Games when one of the prizes is a pair of espadrilles thinking 'SHOES ON THE TABLE! SHOES ON THE TABLE!'

ElGuardiandenoche · 17/02/2021 17:04

Not heard of the witch thing but we always turned it over and drew a face on it and then had fun marmalizing it with a spoon.

cuckooflowers · 17/02/2021 17:06

Salt over the shoulder if you spill some and even if you don't

Mummaofboys93 · 17/02/2021 22:53

My mum used to tell me this when I was a child & I still do it, I make my kids do it also 😂
