Good or bad idea and reasons for your opinion?
I don’t feel strongly either way but I am curious about what aspects of becoming a Republic are more beneficial than the UK’s stable current system.

@AnitaB888 Ireland! You’re confusing president with president. The US president heads the government - the Irish president is a ceremonial role similar to queen but with the ability to elect them and without the outrageous privilege going to their children. If the U.K. got rid of the monarchy they would likely replace with a ceremonial role rather than turn the president into the government head like in the US.

I’m sure there are loads of worthwhile people to hold that role in the U.K.

Eskarina1 · 17/02/2021 18:23

I'm moving more and more towards anti monarchy. The fact that the Queen apparently just approves anything the Prime Minister asks means we don't have a proper check and balance and are very vulnerable. Then it turns out she does intervene but only if it directly benefits her family. I'm not going to be campaigning for it but if there was a referendum I'd vote to abolish.

KeflavikAirport · 17/02/2021 18:29

I really admire the way they’ve all put their hands in their pockets for their subjects during this year of crisis.

No, wait Hmm

LakieLady · 17/02/2021 18:33

Abolish. It's a ridiculous, outdated institution.

I want to be a citizen, not a subject.

rwalker · 17/02/2021 18:38

Irrespective of what you think of them they bring far more to the economy than the cost.

KeflavikAirport · 17/02/2021 18:40

Nonsense

Doubtful, 4x more people visit the Palace of Versailles than Buck Ho.

France has a similar sized economy to ours, Germany much bigger.

Our royalty having close ties to the UAE isn't really a good image, neither is Andrews links to underage sex, esp as he won't go to the US to be questioned.

Nohomemadecandles · 17/02/2021 18:46

Nobody would ever agree on who was fit to hold a ceremonial office in place of it. We're very divided, especially now. Spend an hour on Twitter!

It could be that a cure causes more pain than the illness.

KeflavikAirport · 17/02/2021 18:50

And if we were setting up a new system, would people srsly vote for Charles, Andrew, William and Harry to represent us on the international stage?

josieorange · 17/02/2021 18:50

We can have a vote on it, and anyway I personally think everyone would agree on Floella Benjamin Smile

Puzzledandpissedoff · 17/02/2021 18:52

Given how (Charles) he treats his poor tenants ...

Also how he treats the environment, if the housing/supermarket development around Truro's anything to go by; I thought he regarded prime farmland as a precious national heritage?

Ironic, too, about the link to Truro through the brother of his paedophile bishop pal - yet another appalling error of judgement, and that's seeing it in the best possible light

He was an RAF search and rescue pilot and essentially a volunteer, since he donated his salary

Re William - he is a multi millionaire! He actually did that job very part time and for a short period of time. On the strength of that income from him search and rescue role, he couldn't afford to live in a big London house, let alone several palaces, take countless luxury holidays, have private education for his kids, private health care and a squad of servants tending his every need.

Yet he has all those things.

Nothing should be stopping William or Kate both working full time - they have tutors, nannies and a ton of help at home(S). We work to pay for it.They are idle and we allow them to give the impression they are hardworking. They get to pick and choose what they do, when they do it and how they do it - they may give patronage but others do the actual work.

Retrospectdiva · 17/02/2021 19:31

I'm not sure it's the source of inequality some people see it as. There's always going to be very wealthy people that some don't see as fair or worthy. Inheritance won't go away.

I agree, but I'd rather look up to and respect self-made people than call someone Earl or Duke and kowtow to them. They have done nothing to earn these titles.

Our class system is no better than a disgusting caste system.

KeflavikAirport · 17/02/2021 19:34

William also did a specially accelerated training course at vast public expense before jacking it in like 16 months later.

StoneofDestiny · 17/02/2021 19:35

The presence of the Royal Family is woven into every part of our constitution

We don't actually have a written constitution

StoneofDestiny · 17/02/2021 19:36

👍.

I’d rather have President Obama or Harris than King Andrew or Harry, yeah. In a heartbeat.

1Morewineplease · 17/02/2021 19:49

Have been disgusted to learn of the plight of people who have dared to move into Charles' provinces eg Poundbury. They are struggling to sell their properties, lots of ties and and laws to navigate.
The family is too big. They need to jettison Anne, Andrew and Edward and put them to pasture/earning their own money. All of their children should get nothing from the state and should lead completely private lives .

William and Kate should be working full time for the Royal Family and Harry and Meghan need to just shut up and disappear into a private life.

StoneofDestiny · 17/02/2021 19:53

I’d keep it if I were British. There isn’t really anything else to attract tourists. And they do work as goodwill and charity ambassadors more than far richer types like Richard Branson who is busy spending his money on making luxury space ships instead of doing any charity work. As far as being wealthy they’re not even in the top 100 rich people of the world, they’re not that rich. From what I read most of the money they get from Crown estates is to preserve the historical buildings and antiques- pieces of history. Think of them as living pieces of history. A palace is much more interesting if a queen lives there than as a ruin or converted to offices

You are welcome to them!
If you do t think there is anything in Britain to attract tourists you are very badly mistaken. Whatever parts of the UK you go to you won't be far from stunning scenery, stunning architecture, world famous museums, hosts of National Trust Properties, Heritage sites, Lakes, Coastland, Mountains and Downs.

Richard. Raisin, whatever we think of him, worked himself up to the billionaire position he is in now. Nobody is asked to bow to him or pay him to keep up his lifestyle!

Spot the difference.
Nobody is advocating abolishing wealth.

It's about not asking others who do work, taxpayers, to give their money to multimillionaires so they can live a pampered and self indulgent life with no accountability to the taxpayer. It's utter nonsense.

StoneofDestiny · 17/02/2021 20:00

So we’d all rather have some cheesy president of the UK would we?

Britain can choose from it population a President (short term post) to represent the country at functions where a neutral figurehead is needed. We can design the model, not copy someone else's.

No extended family taken care of, no weddings paid for, no private planes, boats or trains, no grace and favour homes for endless relatives, no protection if they break the law etc etc

It's not beyond the wit of our country to sort that out.

Anyoneelsewilldo · 17/02/2021 20:03

@StoneofDestiny and more importantly no having to bow and curtesy to someone in 2020 because they were born to someone else who gets bowed and curtesy to. I honestly don’t know how anyone denigrates themselves and does that and it disgusts me the royal family expect it!

StoneofDestiny · 17/02/2021 20:10

Correct - I wouldn't do it. They actually bow and scrape to each other - just creepy. They do it, so expect us to do it.

PerkingFaintly · 17/02/2021 20:10

Can we decide what we want instead of a monarchy, and vote FOR that? Rather than just voting AGAINST a monarchy?

Cos after the whole Brexit shambles, where even Nigel Farage was whining that he'd prefer staying in the EU to leaving on the terms of one of the agreements, I'm not keen on these Status Quo vs Nobody Knows scenarios.

StoneofDestiny · 17/02/2021 20:11

Branson - not Raisin (auto correct)
