Good or bad idea and reasons for your opinion?
I don’t feel strongly either way but I am curious about what aspects of becoming a Republic are more beneficial than the UK’s stable current system.

My grandmother wouldn't be happy but I agree, I don't see the point in them!

GeordieGreigsButtButtZoom · 17/02/2021 16:51

You’re getting William (what has he ever achieved!)

He was an RAF search and rescue pilot and essentially a volunteer, since he donated his salary.

I'm not saying that alone means we should retain the Royal Family but it does annoy me a bit when people say they haven't ever done anything. For that alone, William has had a more important job than anything I've ever done.

They don't get involved in politics and bring a lot in tourism, and pay a lot of taxes
Abolishing wouldn't even be that simple and now is certainly not the time.

AndPatraWillNeverSayNever · 17/02/2021 16:52

@StoneofDestiny👏👏 You sponsor people, then bow, scrape and thank them for the privilege of shaking their hands. What a weird world we live in.

There’s been a whole thing about them interfering in legislation....
DGRossetti · 17/02/2021 16:56

They don't get involved in politics

How can you be head of state and not "get involved in politics" ?

Seems we have Schrodinger's Monarch here.

rawalpindithelabrador · 17/02/2021 16:57

@DGRossetti

Dad. How do I get to be Monarch if I want to, when I grow up ?

You don't child. Now shut up and know your place.

Is pretty much all you should need to know why the whole rotten lot should go.

Dad, why does this guy go round expecting people to call him 'Lord', is he a god? No, son, he just happened to slide out between a certain pair of thighs. Yeah, that makes so much sense.

Mom, why is a nonce called a Prince and not in jail?

Then why does Harry still have all his titles and place in the succession? They totally get into politics.

The monarchy, a pillar of fair and equitably mobile society . . . said no one ever.

Sloth66 · 17/02/2021 16:59

After reading the book And What Do you Do? by Norman Baker, I’m all for abolishing the RF in favor of a Republic. Their lifestyles involve obscene luxury and excess, they are not accountable in any way for their often poor behavior, they quietly work to secure tax and other advantages, and the pandemic has shown they are not needed and have no place in a modern democracy.

Pedallleur · 17/02/2021 17:01

Get rid. No one sees them except on TV. Outdated. Can still have changing of guard, drooping the colour etc but given recent news about their wealth increases after off shore sales and Queens Consent ruling they need to be dispensed with. They'll still have their £££££ and homes and might enjoy the anonymity they crave.

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 17/02/2021 17:01

When have they got into politics its extremely rare?
And what has harry keeping his title got to do with politics?
Also some here actually believe the crown is all real ,!!!!

DGRossetti · 17/02/2021 17:01

have no place in a modern democracy.

Of course there is the other possibility that the UK isn't a modern democracy ....

You're not supposed to keep your title and be political in any way and he has.

At any rate, the lot of them are no longer needed. Get rid. Abolish hereditary titles, they belong in history.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 17/02/2021 17:04

Sweden/Denmark/Norway. Likewise, Belgium, Luxemburg, Spain and the Netherlands are all monarchies

Yes, and most of them (except Sweden) have a properly codified Constitution.
The UK on the other hand is left with whatever's cobbled together largely by the self-interested, with a lot of PR thrown in to convince us it's all being done for our own good

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 17/02/2021 17:04

Name me all the occasions they have got involved in politics ?
It very rare ? We vote in a goverment
Sounds like lots of bitter people here , plenty of people are born into rich families , thats life .

Yep, and Prince Charles screwing over his tenants. Can't have those peasants stepping out of place! Probably sends carrier pigeon messages to that twat Jacob Rees-Mogg.

Load of jumped up wankers.

Anyoneelsewilldo · 17/02/2021 17:05

@GeordieGreigsButtButtZoom oh yes those two whole years of his life where he worked in search and rescue, what an impressive career. Hardly up to the standard of someone like Mary Robinson. Plus he only did it as he had to do something while waiting around to be King. I doubt it was his ambition or drive that led him to that role. I really don’t find him an inspiring person.

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 17/02/2021 17:06

I wouldn't say harry has got into politics per se , he has never said vote this way or that .
Having his own opinions is not getting involved

DGRossetti · 17/02/2021 17:07

As head of state, it's impossible not to. Every single law passed since 1952 for a start ....

The tourists don't see the royal family, just the buildings where some of them live. They pay taxes on what they have to but will take every opportunity to be tax efficient. Yes they receive the Sovereign grant in return for some income but they have other income streams. Politics is covered by such things as Queens Consent. Charles well known for influencing certain decisions. The Royals have access all areas in every walk of life if they wish it. Don't think 99% would notice if the Monarchy was gone. Lucy Worsley would have a job for life making documentaries about them.
DynamoKev · 17/02/2021 17:10

@CoronaIsWatching

Prince Andrew is just what they're all like behind the PR spin

Prince Harry and no loyalty to the monarchy or the country in the end

Prince William having affairs left right and centre, all covered up

Prince Charles and Camilla both vile in their treatment of Diana (what The Crown and see for yourself)

Only one I like is Kate Middleton but she's not even a blood royal

Ha ha - so The Crown is a documentary now?
ChristOnAPeloton · 17/02/2021 17:10

I’d be happy to see the back of the lot of them too. The Nonce, The Philanderer and his Stepford Wife, The Whinger and his grabby wife, The Jug-Eared Dimwit, The Racist, and sour faced Granny at the top of the pecking order.

I could do a better job than any of them- and I was dragged up on a council estate.

Zevia · 17/02/2021 17:10

Abolish. It's an awful institution that should be consigned to the history books.

That said, I've felt sympathy for certain of them on a personal level (particularly Harry and Meghan) in recent times.

I see you've read it too, Sloth
I thought it excellent and very well researched, though as a republican for most of my life I didn't need convincing

My dog is a better person than they are.
