Good or bad idea and reasons for your opinion?
I don’t feel strongly either way but I am curious about what aspects of becoming a Republic are more beneficial than the UK’s stable current system.

Sorry, I didn’t mean to enable voting! ☺️

All for abolition here. It's undemocratic, props up a class system and the money could be better spent on more deserving people.

FourEyesGood · 17/02/2021 12:49

Your use of the word ‘stable’ about the current system implies that you do have feelings about this. And I’ll just direct your attention towards Prince Andrew.
I’m in favour of abolishing the monarchy. I didn’t vote because you didn’t indicate what YABU and YANBU represent.

LApprentiSorcier · 17/02/2021 12:49

It's ridiculous that the Royals own/have access to so much wealth and property, when people over whom they reign are homeless and going hungry.

sst1234 · 17/02/2021 12:50

Some might say there are bigger problems to solve than focusing on a gesture such as republicanism.

CoronaIsWatching · 17/02/2021 12:50

Abolish definitely. I think they're probably all vile people under the PR spin.

skintbutok · 17/02/2021 12:51

I cannot see the point of them.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 17/02/2021 12:52

Whether or not the Royals are doing a good job is irrelevant. The fact is that it is an anachronism in this day and age to become leader of a country by birth rather than election.

boobybum · 17/02/2021 12:54

Get rid ASAP. How we can call ourselves a democracy with them, House of Lords etc is beyond me.

billyt · 17/02/2021 12:54

Get rid. Job done.

GreenlandTheMovie · 17/02/2021 12:54

I disagree with it in principle, but can see why Britain wants to keep them. As a sort of familial guiding influence, they have a role to. Play. I'd like to see their constitutional role removed and the constitution modernised and properly formalised instead.

I do think that many members of this particular royal family are coming very close to bringing Britain's reputation into disrepute, and would like to see the rules on exploitation of their birthright for commercial purposes tightened up.

Gilead · 17/02/2021 12:55

Abolish!

BIWI · 17/02/2021 12:55

YABU for thinking we have a stable system!

HarryElephante · 17/02/2021 12:57

It would probably put the Daily Mail out of circulation, so I am all for it.

MrsHuntGeneNotJeremyObviously · 17/02/2021 12:58

I don't see how monarchy is entirely compatible with democracy. The notion that some people more important than the rest of us because they were born into a specific family does not fit with modern values.
I wouldn't consider it our most pressing problem at the moment but if we (as a nation) decide that we do value having a royal family, imo it ought to be significantly slimmed down, in keeping with the Scandinavian royals maybe.
The more we hear about their behaviour, the less special they feel. They are in danger imo of making themselves obsolete. I'd be surprised if their was long lasting support once the Queen is no longer with us.

HeidiHaughton · 17/02/2021 12:58

They add a touch of glamour to the nation. I'd rather the queen that a dreadful woman like Melania Trump.

MrsHuntGeneNotJeremyObviously · 17/02/2021 12:59

There, not their!

CoronaIsWatching · 17/02/2021 13:00

Prince Andrew is just what they're all like behind the PR spin

Prince Harry and no loyalty to the monarchy or the country in the end

Prince William having affairs left right and centre, all covered up

Prince Charles and Camilla both vile in their treatment of Diana (what The Crown and see for yourself)

Only one I like is Kate Middleton but she's not even a blood royal

TrufflyPig · 17/02/2021 13:00

I'd like to see their constitutional role removed and the constitution modernised and properly formalised instead.

This too, if we can't abolish them we can at the bare minimum make their role purely symbolic. The Queen and Prince Charles have both meddled in politics to suit their own needs.

BigFatLiar · 17/02/2021 13:00

Not bothered one way or the other.

Don't think they're that expensive. I'm sure there are others who know the figures better but I believe in the past many 'royal' properties were giving to the government in return for an income to fund the royals. The income provided by the crown estates exceeds what the royals get so the country actually makes money from them. If we break the deal and abolish the role of the monarchy will they be entitled to the return of the crown estates?

Viviennemary · 17/02/2021 13:02

Keep it. But get rid of all the hangers on and exploiters. If they can't do that it needs to go. In fact probably better it does go.

MyLittleOrangutan · 17/02/2021 13:03

Get rid. Nothing to be proud of in my opinion. Harry's the only one I ever liked.

BigFatLiar · 17/02/2021 13:04

Prince Charles and Camilla both vile in their treatment of Diana (what The Crown and see for yourself)

Do remember The Crown was a TV story.

I suspect Diana wanted to be a Princess but didn't really want Charles.

As for the way he treated her, my OH used to say that she should have been princess of York because she had more men than the grand old duke.

TrufflyPig · 17/02/2021 13:04

If we break the deal and abolish the role of the monarchy will they be entitled to the return of the crown estates?

They don't own the crown estates so no.

Fuhfeuucdr · 17/02/2021 13:06

Keep it 100%
