To keep my milk in the carton?

I use my milk from the plastic carton/bottle it comes in however recently I keep seeing people are decanting their milk into jugs and storing it that way in the fridge.

Is this the proper way to keep your milk?

Ps my friends do have their homemade oat milk in a jug though

pumpkinbump · 17/02/2021 11:13

Surely it's more hygienic to keep it in the vessel it came in? Don't understand this at all!

It is the kind of perfect home life I sometimes dream of but am too lazy to implement! The days when, in my head I can switch between running a business and cooking/cleaning for 2 kids to a Doris Day kitchen with a frilly apron and scones and a milk jug Grin

My mother decants her milk into glass bottles in the fridge. Believe this started when she stopped having a delivery from the milkman delivery but preferred the look/taste from the glass bottle. She has several other quirks so i just let her crack on!
I do/did this, I just hate the milk sitting in the plastic container and never sure if the plastic continues leaching into the milk.

My cousins do because of the pouring from a massive bottle thing. My parents did, because we lived on a dairy farm, and it came straight of the bulk tank to the jug. I don't, because I don't usually have more than a 1l bottle and often only 0.5l and it's only me here. And I already do enough washing up, and a jug doesn't fit in the fridge door, which means fridge Tetris to fit everything in.

Why on earth would you decant milk? Does it need to " breathe" like wine? Sounds a bit like something people who iron socks would do.

I was brought up by my grandparents. They always had a milk jug but that was in the days of bottled milk. Cartons all the way here

EsmesRedPetticoat · 17/02/2021 14:15

My ILs do this too. I assume because it’s easier to pour from than the big plastic bottle although with them it could be a far more esoteric reason!

YouAreYourBestThing · 17/02/2021 18:05

Blimey, that's a proper posh thing to do...I'm obviously not posh enough, and neither are any of my friends or family...and I know a lot of people 🤣

mum has small milk jug to go with her giant teapot so she can sit and have multiple cups of tea Smile

@LockdownCheeseToastie

Mil decants into a jug, jug kept in fridge. Also tap water put through a brita filter. Tuts if anyone uses the carton milk or water straight from the tap. Also further jug of water in the kitchen for the dogs left for 24 hours before use as “it’s better for them” than water straight from the tap.
I think I read somewhere that if tap water is left to stand all the sediment sinks to the bottom so it might be true. I have tap water in bottles in the fridge. Mostly to chill it but also for that reason in case it is true Grin

@BarbaraofSeville

LOL at the OP thinking a carefully crafted and styled photo on instagram is in any way 'real life'.

We sometimes pour the last of the milk from a 4 pint carton into a smaller clip top plastic container to make room for alcohol if fridge space is an issue, but otherwise, the milk stays in whatever receptacle it came in.

It wasn’t a carefully crafted and styled photo on Instagram Hmm it was a story of a women taking a jug of milk out of the fridge when she made tea LOL
