To keep my milk in the carton?

MagicMatilda · 16/02/2021 19:59

I use my milk from the plastic carton/bottle it comes in however recently I keep seeing people are decanting their milk into jugs and storing it that way in the fridge.

Is this the proper way to keep your milk?

The only people I've ever seen do this are buying refill sachets of soy milk from the Chinese grocer and decanting it because its impossible to store once opened otherwise (and really easy to accidentally squeeze all over you when taking it out of the fridge).

Kiki275 · 16/02/2021 20:49

We often have milk in a jug, only because it comes straight from the farms raw milk tank. Nothing fancy though, Pyrex at best.x

Nohomemadecandles · 16/02/2021 22:28

@StormyInTheNorth that is a sentence I have never seen written down before

"I worry about my fridge seal". Grin

I get it now I've thought about it. But it really made me chuckle! (Suspect ours is goosed, thinking about it)

BoomBoomsCousin · 16/02/2021 22:36

I did for a while when I had a tiny fridge that didn't fit the plastic milk jug in the door. Decanted some into a (pretty, china) jug that did fit in the door and kept the rest lying down with other fridge things piled on top. that way it was easy to get at milk for tea first thing in the morning.

Now we have a nice big fridge and keep it in the carton in the door and only decant when we're serving tea/coffee on a tray with a sugar bowl and stuff (so v. rarely in the time of covid!).

BiddyPop · 16/02/2021 22:43

Yes to something DGPs (on both sides) used to do.

We use 1l cartons (under 2 pints) so generally have it in the carton. Even for most visitors (mugs of tea/coffee and biscuits/cake at the kitchen table). If I am feeling properly hostessy, or it's DM, I'll get out a jug. Or if we're having people over for dinner, I'll use a jug for the after dinner coffee (and use cups for that). But I know I'll be running the dishwasher twice anyway (ours is only slim so all the plates etc from a 3 course dinner, even just for 4, don't all fit - so I'll be running it again and fill with pots etc so a jug is no problem ).

Or if the carton drops or otherwise leaks, I'll transfer to a jug - but that's usually a plastic one I'd use for measuring/mixing, just to hold it all in 1.

FinalSongbird · 16/02/2021 22:45

I get mine delivered to my door in glass bottles with fancy shiny tops, no need to decant 😂

Leeds2 · 16/02/2021 22:50

I have never heard of, or seen, anyone decanting milk for everyday purposes. Yes to put in a milk jug if you were serving tea/coffee to visitors although even then, I wouldn't!

jessyjo2 · 16/02/2021 22:55

Mine only gets into a jug when MIL is on way over!!!

StrawberrySquash · 16/02/2021 22:55

We always had milk in the milk jug as a kid. It was a ceramic jug that held just over a pint and lived in the fridge

Is this in the Instagram world, or the real world?

Crosstrainer · 16/02/2021 22:57

We were brought up that it was the height of slovenliness to have a milk bottle on the table.

Yes! I’d forgotten about that - my mother had a huge bee in her bonnet about this.

bluecricket · 16/02/2021 22:59

My mum decants hers into a jug. It has its own special coaster in the fridge so it doesn't tip over.

StormyInTheNorth · 16/02/2021 23:49

@Nohomemadecandles

Fridge seal and overall temperature were the 'reasons' the midwives couldn't store big bottles of ready made formula. It stuck with me, and I often have flashbacks, especially when DH slams either the fridge or freezer shut. He says he likes to make sure it's shut.
I think I need help! Grin

passtheorange · 16/02/2021 23:57

@MagicMatilda

Phew good to know I’m not committing awful milk storage crimes!

Yes, guilty...seen on Instagram Blush

Tip of the Day:

Instagram is not real life Smile

Real life is too short to fanny about pouring milk from one perfectly good container to another and creating washing-up in the process.

My mum too.

She will literally decant it into anything so that the milk bottle or carton isn't on the table. And i mean ANYTHING - she's used (in my house) - and this is just a sample - a baby's bottle, an egg cup, a glass.

The egg cup is my favourite as it was just so pointless.

She's snobby and judgemental about pointless things. However, even she doesn't decant for the fridge.

MaryBoBary · 17/02/2021 09:27

My ILs do this too. It's bizarre. The milk jug is too small to fit the whole bottle of milk so then you have 2 containers taking up space in the fridge. I just don't understand it. They are not elderly and have always done this so not age related (milk bottle too heavy etc).

Beseigedbykillersquirrels · 17/02/2021 09:32

My nan does this and she says it's because they always used to do it before they had a fridge inside. They repurposed a coal bunker to use as a kind of cold storage and it was a faff to go and get milk from it so they poured a day's worth into the jug and left it on the windowsill. I have no idea why she still does it now, with an indoor fridge.

FTM91 · 17/02/2021 09:38

DFs partner does this. But she decants part of the big carton into a smaller jug. So both the jug and the carton are now taking up room in the fridge...I don't get it!!

BarbaraofSeville · 17/02/2021 09:46

LOL at the OP thinking a carefully crafted and styled photo on instagram is in any way 'real life'.

We sometimes pour the last of the milk from a 4 pint carton into a smaller clip top plastic container to make room for alcohol if fridge space is an issue, but otherwise, the milk stays in whatever receptacle it came in.

Gcnq · 17/02/2021 10:02

This is actually quite interesting now!

I completely understand decanting from a 6pint bought plastic bottle because they are impossible to pour from.

I also decant into our china jug as part of our tea set if we're having guests for tea and cake, it's that much nicer than sticking a plastic 2 Pinter on the table.

I wouldn't decant every time that would be mad but certainly do sometimes
(not that we've had any guests for tea in an entire year Sad)

NewScone · 17/02/2021 10:09

Feels a bit unhygienic to put in a jug not sure why though

AlwaysLatte · 17/02/2021 10:12

I did for a while when the bags of milk were available. Not sure why they stopped selling those. But if I have to buy the plastic bottle, I might as well use it!

LockdownCheeseToastie · 17/02/2021 10:18

Mil decants into a jug, jug kept in fridge. Also tap water put through a brita filter. Tuts if anyone uses the carton milk or water straight from the tap. Also further jug of water in the kitchen for the dogs left for 24 hours before use as “it’s better for them” than water straight from the tap.

user1471523870 · 17/02/2021 10:18

It reminds me when I watch movies and I see whisky poured from posh crystal decanters. I always wonder WHY? I mean, unless you have a barrel in the cellar, why would you decant it from an already lovely bottle that serves exactly the same purpose? This happens in 100% of the movies if whiskey/spirit makes an appearance.

Milk, no way. I get it looks lovely in a glass jug but life is too short. And, anyway, I have my milk delivered in glass bottles from the milkman and that satisfies my need of beautifying it!

mootymoo · 17/02/2021 10:27

Only if I'm trying to be posh - milk jug is when the cups and saucers come out
