Pancakes and gravy

When I tell people this is how I was served pancakes as a kid they look at me like I’m crazy!
In our house it was ash and pancakes with lashings of gravy and it’s was delightful!

I’ve never tried a sweet pancake, but that’s all I hear people talking about! Am I missing out? Do other people eat pancakes with gravy or AIBU?!

@BarbaraofSeville

Well this is a revelation. I had no idea that so many people were so baffled and revolted by something that's been a very nice, commonly eaten, winter staple for the whole of my life.

I bet you all eat Christmas cake without cheese as well. Sad

You can't eat Christmas cake without cheese. And it has to be Wensleydale or white Stilton.

I live in Holland, and every village and town has at least one pancake restaurant (or even ship in the very cool places). Here you can have pancakes with pretty much anything - plain. cheese, stew, curry, right through to icecream, nutella and such things. My favourite is mushroom and bacon - so yes I can see pancakes and gravy.

I miss pancake restaurants and ships.

squishee · 16/02/2021 14:11

My favourite is fluffy American style ones with what passes for bacon around here and caramel sauce. It's a match made in heaven.

This.

I am unduly disturbed by the idea of ash, gravy and pancake and I was quite looking forward to my pancake tonight.

I have no idea why it seems quite so wrong, but it does.

littlepattilou · 16/02/2021 14:19

Pancakes and gravy?! 🤮

Slothkin · 16/02/2021 17:20

I’ve convinced my husband to make toad in the hole for tea tonight @EBearhug! I claimed it’s just a cuddly pancake.

Slothkin · 16/02/2021 17:23

@Seriouslymole I’m not sure if I’m misremembering the book but it might be Nigel Slater’s Toast where he talks about his stepmum being an excellent cook but always with a cigarette in her lips and the ash falling into food?

PorcelainCatStack · 16/02/2021 17:30

@Brieminewine you’re not alone. Yorkshire family. Growing up we always had beef stew and gravy on a pancake. A pancake is afterall pretty much a flat yorkie pud. No longer live in Yorkshire and people think I’m barmy or making it up but it’s bloody tasty.

EternalOptimist7 · 16/02/2021 17:33

Love savoury pancakes! Years ago we had a power cut & DM made pancakes with tinned pilchards on a paraffin stove! Never had them before or since!

Aprilx · 16/02/2021 17:39

Pancakes with beef stew and gravy sounds disgusting. I have never heard of anyone doing that.

Today I did savoury pancakes for lunch, we had it with mushroom, ham and cheese. I then did a couple more which i had with a bit of sugar and lemon. DH bought bananas and Nutella for his sweet pancake.

You have now!

Hankunamatata · 16/02/2021 18:06

In northern ireland - a fry is served with pancakes - thought it was weird at first but kinda goes with soda bread and potatoe bread.

TimeIhadaNameChange · 16/02/2021 18:07

Have you tried pancake soup? Single layer of pancakes rolled and thinly sliced in a bowl coveted with veg stock. It's a German dish for children. Surprisingly yummy.

Shark2020 · 16/02/2021 18:11

Love ash on pancakes, and sometimes my mum used to serve them with a tin of scotch broth at other times, never done that since but might give it a go.

Absolutely the right way :)

Are you up north?

I've never had a sweet pancake either. Not sure I want one.

saffire · 16/02/2021 18:20

Ash? Fag ash?

trappedsincesundaymorn · 16/02/2021 18:20

Doesn't matter what you serve them with, they're pancakes so they are going to be horrible.

Brieminewine · 16/02/2021 18:26

@LuckyLuckyWoman of course!

We are having beans instead.

LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow · 16/02/2021 18:31

@MistleTOEboughski

Well no-one liked my suggestion of gravy with salmon and chips the other day either.
is there anything you won't put gravy on? Just out of interest :o

I loved the MN horror on that thread though :o

I was going to ask if you were from Yorkshire. I much prefer pancakes with gravy. Ash/hash or stew and plenty of hendo’s - gorgeous. My kids prefer sweet ones though.

Isolatedizzy · 17/02/2021 06:46

I grew up eating pancakes, Ash and hendo's relish! 🤣
Had lemon & sugar last night though!
