Pancakes and gravy

When I tell people this is how I was served pancakes as a kid they look at me like I’m crazy!
In our house it was ash and pancakes with lashings of gravy and it’s was delightful!

I’ve never tried a sweet pancake, but that’s all I hear people talking about! Am I missing out? Do other people eat pancakes with gravy or AIBU?!

I always had pancakes with meaty gravy at my Nana and Grandads when I was younger and then lemon and sugar and strawberry jam when I was at home.

rc22 · 16/02/2021 11:13

I've never had gravy on pancakes but know people who do. I used to go to a cafe years ago and have pancakes with chilli con carne in. Delicious. Tonight I'll be having mine with golden syrup as usual though!!

Brieminewine · 16/02/2021 11:14

I can confirm up north it’s ‘ash, not to be confused with corned beef hash.

I’ve bought Nutella, syrup etc and fully intend on giving the sweet ones a go!

This needs reported to mumsnet.

Absolute monstrosity. Get the syrup out.

austenwildfell · 16/02/2021 11:18

Pancakes with lemon & sugar.
Grandmother used to serve Yorkshire pudding as a first course to Sunday roast dinner.
Father said it was cheap and filling so Granny saved money on main portion size!

ZackaryQuack · 16/02/2021 11:18

You've got the perfect pancake day dinner there!!!!

Pancakes with gravy for dinner
Pancakes with lemon and sugar for pudding!!!!

I can't make pancakes (or yorkies) to save my life with normal batter, so I usually make banana pancakes as they keep their shape for me, so definitely a sweet not a savory option haha.

AIMD · 16/02/2021 11:23

Ewwwwwwwww
No

Doublechins · 16/02/2021 11:24

My DH only eats them with ketchup. This is the only thing he eats ketchup on. I've tried to get him to have normal toppings for years but now I've just accepted he's odd.

BarbaraofSeville · 16/02/2021 11:26

We had corned beef hash* and pancakes on Saturday because we had veg that needed using up. There's still a bit left that I'm going to have today for lunch, no pancakes left sadly.

  • Corned beef hash = corned beef, onions, potatoes, carrots, peas, sprouts and gravy, like stew, served with pancakes or dumplings, not that weird fried potato, corned beef and onion variation with a fried egg on top.
unchienandalusia · 16/02/2021 11:28

Grim. Sorry!

Frlrlrubert · 16/02/2021 11:31

My mums 'ash was served with pancakes (the 'ash was a sort of beef stew but you had to watch out cos she'd put kidneys in there, chopped up so you thought it might be a bit of mushroom).

DH is southern so won't entertain that sort or thing, I'm attempting homemade crispy pancakes for the savoury pancakes today.

GranaryBread47 · 16/02/2021 11:31

My husband grew up with only savoury pancakes too! He'd have them with a sort of stew which he made for me one pancake day without any warning... I can't stand the thought of savoury pancakes but I'm weirdly considering trying sweet yorkies?

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 16/02/2021 11:35

BEEF STEW! Shock

Can it get any worse? Why not add Christmas Pudding or Casu Martzu?

AlwaysLatte · 16/02/2021 11:39

I do have pancakes with crispy bacon and scrambled eggs so it's not too far different, I suppose! Not tempted to try it though...

steppemum · 16/02/2021 11:45

Dh is Duthc and they take pancakes to a whole other level.

So in a pancake house, you have huge dinner plate sized pancakes, quite thick with all sorts of toppings
bacon
cheese
ham
raisins
apple
cinnamon
banana

all topped with syrup.
and they don't really separate them into savoury and sweet either. Dh will have bacon and raisins and cheese and then cover it in syrup Hmm

So tonight, we rae having bacon and cheese pancakes, thick large, Dutch style
followed by Englishs style thin pancakes with strawberried, bananas, lemon sugar and syrup, and whipped cream

TeeniefaeTroon · 16/02/2021 11:47

Not unusual, I had Yorkshire
Pudding and jam last night.

AngelicInnocent · 16/02/2021 11:47

My DC have always eaten pancakes with sugar and vinegar. Still do as adults.

I blame their grandma, such craziness is nothing to do with me.

Hobbesmanc · 16/02/2021 11:48

Left over yorkies with golden syrup was a sunday dessert every weekend when I was little. We had our pancakes at the weekend as OH is working today. Hot and buttery with lemon and sugar fresh from the pan. Then extra made to have as dinner. Made them into enchildas with veggie chilli and salsa

emmathedilemma · 16/02/2021 11:52

Do you by any chance work for the Weetabix marketing board?

EBearhug · 16/02/2021 11:57

Yorkshire pudding and gravy, toad-in-the-hole and gravy - as long as you don't sweeten the batter, it's fine. I like savoury pancakes and sweet ones, with lemon and sugar, or cherries.

Now I want toad-in-the-hole.

AdaColeman · 16/02/2021 11:58

I've always liked savoury pancakes, with fillings like chicken in white wine sauce, smoked haddock in cheese sauce, ham and leeks in cheese sauce. They make a filling yet cheap meal and are a good way of using up leftovers.

I like sweet pancakes too of course! Tonight I'm making Crepes Suzette, pancakes in a buttery orange sauce.

Eleganz · 16/02/2021 12:01

Pancakes and Yorkshires are the same mix prepared differently so it is no surprise that pancakes and gravy works very well.

We use to get a Yorkshire pudding and jam if there were any left over from Sunday dinner, no different.

Bambini12 · 16/02/2021 12:14

Same here! I grew up on pancakes with gravy and didn't try sweet pancakes until I was an adult.

I think my partner would think I'd gone mad if I suggested we have them with gravy now though. I might have them anyway, the thought of it is making me seriously nostalgic

BarbaraofSeville · 16/02/2021 12:48

Well this is a revelation. I had no idea that so many people were so baffled and revolted by something that's been a very nice, commonly eaten, winter staple for the whole of my life.

I bet you all eat Christmas cake without cheese as well. Sad

Busybusybust · 16/02/2021 12:51

Sounds good to me! I was brought up veggie in the 50s and a favourite meal was vegetable stew (made with marmite) served on pancakes. Absolutely delicious!
