Were Christmas Eve boxes not enough?!

I’ve just seen these advertised on Facebook. Is this a thing now? Must we have a cutesy box for every single calendar event? Where are people keeping these crates as they endlessly accumulate?

Actually we even did a Halloween cauldron filled with treats this year to make up for no Halloween party or trick or treating.

BikeRunSki · 15/02/2021 18:28

I’m obviously mean. My dc get empty baskets and have to hunt for the eggs/sweets/chocolates.

notalwaysalondoner · 15/02/2021 18:31

It matters for lots of reasons, mainly (a) excessive commercialisation pressuring people to buy stuff (b) excessive consumerism (last thing the environment needs is people buying each other/children random material goods because they're 'supposed to' because it's Christmas Eve/Easter etc.) (c) excessive competition on social media making people feel bad about their lives and choices.

In the old days Easter baskets would have a few home made painted eggs in, not boxes of random material goods or chocolate in 89 squillion layers of packaging.

CoffeeCheeseandCupcakes · 15/02/2021 18:34

Easter baskets have been a thing since at least I was a kid...32 now. This isn't new

lollipoprainbow · 15/02/2021 18:35

I don't do Christmas Eve boxes but I do an Easter hamper with eggs, cuddly bunny and pretty shredded pink and green paper plus the toy which my dd has requested !!

snowblower · 15/02/2021 18:37

Easter baskets have always been a thing in my family. I'm mid 40's

TinyTroubleMaker · 15/02/2021 18:38

Those wooden boxes are from IKEA. Just get a few coloured pens and make your own.

piglet81 · 15/02/2021 18:41

What I want to know is why are the names on the top left ones blurred out?

MessAllOver · 15/02/2021 18:42

I object to the boxes because I think children should work for their Easter eggs. When we were growing up, the Easter bunny (aka our father) would come up with fiendish clues which would lead us a merry dance all over the house and garden and usually up the ladder into the loft as well. We'd be exhausted by the end. The clues always involved at least one anagram, one maths puzzle and one map- reading question (compass provided). While he may have taken his role as Easter bunny a bit too seriously, this modern tendency of giving children everything on a plate (or in a box, in the case) is to be deplored!

BrumBoo · 15/02/2021 18:43

Oh goodness who cares.

I grew up in a Christian household, Easter was always a mini Christmas. A million eggs, money, gift baskets, my grandparents usually bought us toys instead of more chocolate..... it was a pretty good time I wont lie.

My children get an egg that they don't even bother with (chocolate is pretty shit these days). They have no idea what Easter is and won't notice anyone else getting baskets so has zero effect on us.

I do Xmas Eve boxes instead of a stocking as a new book and PJs is a nice way to chill tiny, over excited children. I really couldn't give a shite how 'chavvy' or whatnot it is.

MargaretThursday · 15/02/2021 18:44

You mean people generally don't do pancake day boxes? Shock
Grin

Cocopogo · 15/02/2021 18:45

YABU didn’t you know MN invented the Xmas eve box?

Hankunamatata · 15/02/2021 18:45

There have always been easter baskets 🤷‍♀️

hansgrueber · 15/02/2021 18:46

In Germany we used to do Easter baskets, a simple thing usually with mini-eggs and other small treats.

Timpeall · 15/02/2021 18:46

I've never heard of Easter boxes being a thing but these kinds of Facebook vendors are usually just a woman trying to make an extra few bob from home. So I won't grumble too much

GeordieGreigsButtButtZoom · 15/02/2021 18:46

It's 95% books and chocolate, what's the objection? We should all be doing this every week.

namechangetheworld · 15/02/2021 18:49

I think it's a nice idea. Mine are young so we do a chocolate egg hunt in the garden for Easter, but this might be good for older children.

MyLittleOrangutan · 15/02/2021 18:51

Easter baskets have been a thing forever, nothing new. And special treats were always a thing on Christmas eve. That weird elf can fuck off though.

Consumerism at its greatest. Then we wonder why so many people are in debt...

I had an Easter basket when I was a little kid... up until I moved out, actually! I don’t think they are outlandish or anything.

killickthere · 15/02/2021 18:53

Consumers just gotta keep consuming, in a consumerist society. It's vile.

Anotherlovelybitofsquirrel · 15/02/2021 18:54

These are fab! Don't like them? Don't buy one would be the best advice Smile

BrumBoo · 15/02/2021 18:55

Yet after many many years of spending at Christmas and Easter, people never learn. Maybe we should ban these events, that will teach people to enjoy anything whilst buying shit!
MissBaskinIfYoureNasty · 15/02/2021 18:58

It makes me feel a bit anxious. I don't want any more tat in my house. What do you do with the crate thing after? It'd just be another thing hanging around. Christmas eve box, Easter box, valentine's box. Just make it stop!
