To want to know about the best value apples?

I'm trying to eat a healthier diet. I love Pink Lady apples but they're so expensive. I bought Braeburns instead (cheaper) but they're a bit mushy. Envy

In your opinion which apples sit at the nicest for least money nexus?

Cox....sweet and crisp

BonnieDundee · 15/02/2021 07:38

Gala

BikeRunSki · 15/02/2021 07:38

Definitely Cox, but they are not available all year round.

devildeepbluesea · 15/02/2021 07:45

I think you were unlucky with your Braeburns, I usually find them lovely and crisp.

Them or Granny Smith. I like a nice tart apple.

BigTallyWacker · 15/02/2021 07:45

Royal gala

speakout · 15/02/2021 07:47

Depends on your taste.
I find Granny Smith too tart- but I am not a fan of acidic fruit.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 15/02/2021 07:49

We are Pink Lady fans here as well. We find Gala too mushy. Our next favourite are Jazz. But unless money is a real issue, I would rather spend on Pink Lady and try to save the money elsewhere.

ShaunaTheSheep · 15/02/2021 07:51

I usually buy Gala

I’d agree with this, we switched from Pink Lady to Braeburn when I realised we were spending over £10 a week on apples Blush
HankMarvinjg · 15/02/2021 07:52

Jazz apples.

Nineinchnailfile · 15/02/2021 07:55

I find it’s the luck of the draw with braeburns. Sometimes great, sometimes mushy.
We like pink ladies and russet but tend to go with gala ones for everyday!

LiquoriceLilly · 15/02/2021 07:59

Keep an eye out for Cripps Pink apples at your local market or greengrocer. They're the same variety as Pink Lady, just without the trademark (and associated premium!)

cariadlet · 15/02/2021 08:02

I like Granny Smiths, nice and sharp. DP likes Gala. I've never bought Pink Lady because I remember them appearing in the shops so have an instinctive dislike of them. I automatically think of them as being new and equate that with being artificial.

Whoateallthechocolate · 15/02/2021 08:02

I'm intrigued how many apples you're eating a week...
We usually have Gala and Golden Delicious in.

GnomeDePlume · 15/02/2021 08:03

It is the luck of the draw this time if year as apples are out if season. Either they will have been kept in cold store or they will have travelled a long way. Neither of which is good for taste and texture.

Volcanoexplorer · 15/02/2021 08:04

Yep, gala. Sweet and crisp but much cheaper than Pink Ladies.

PracticingPerson · 15/02/2021 08:05

None of the main supermarket apples are much good, they are all bland. With apples I try to get as many different ones as possible as they are amazing but anything gets boring if you eat the same over and over.

So for value and taste, I would say don't go to a supermarket, lots of farm shops deliver now and you get more choice.

I could bore on about apple varieties but I will restrain myself, I think some British apples are just the best thing in the world to eat.

Mypathtriedtokillme · 15/02/2021 08:06

Buying them in the right season helps.
Cheapest and freshest in Autumn.

Helenluvsrob · 15/02/2021 08:11

I think , if you are generally eating better and so not buying crisps / choc/ ready made foods etc your budget will stretch to decent apples.

We buy jazz. The best !

Randomdogbite · 15/02/2021 08:27

Usually the cheapest are whatever is in season so we buy gala at the moment from Tesco but sometimes cox’s they are 80p for 6, we have a big family and eat 12 a day Shock

Greentrianglesarethebestones · 15/02/2021 08:36

@PracticingPerson

Please bore on about apple varieties! I'm genuinely interested!

Gala, Granny Smiths and Jazz are all great suggestions, thank you.

Jazz are great, and I’ve also found some nice ones in Sainsbury’s called Kanzi (I think).

PracticingPerson · 15/02/2021 09:00

Well you did ask Grin

This website lists a lot of varieties www.orangepippin.com/varieties/apples although now is not the best time for buying apples - but we are still getting offered half a dozen decent options. I would suggest a non-supermarket supplier - you can buy apples in big quantities because the ones you get in the supermarket are ancient by the time you eat them, if you store apples like my parents did off the tree you can keep them a fair time (wrap in paper, single layer in a box, cool dry place) at home.

Two of my favourites are Nonpareil and Egremont Russet. The kids like Spartans and Sunset.

I have found such nice apples by visiting any local apple days, for example at National trust places - they sell them cheaply in autumn. Locally there is a group that collects apples and gives them away rather than let them rot.

A good day is the first trip to the fruit shop that sells all their own apples, every variety is the same price (except the cookers) and so we just get about ten varieties and have a big tasting session every year Smile.

I think especially if you are consciously changing diet then buying the very best tasting healthy food really helps as it then becomes a treat in itself rather than something worthy but dull.

@Whoateallthechocolate

4 people, an apple a day each is 28 apples. They come in packs of 6, so don’t divide probably, we need 5 bags a week.

Currently at Aldi, it’s £2.49 for 6. That would be £12.45 on apples a week.

Braeburn are 97p for 6, which is £4.85 a week. A difference of £7.60.
