To ask for help getting RTÈ in England?

TheLovelyJoeDuffy · 14/02/2021 21:04

I would be very grateful for any help with this - have posted in Craicnet but also AIBU for more traffic. My mother is currently in a hospice in England. I would like her to be able to listen to RTÈ (see my user name which refers to her love of The Lovely Joe Smile)

My (admittedly old school) first idea of just tuning in a LW radio to 252 doesn't work there. They have a wifi we can connect to but my mind seems so blank at the moment. Ideally I would like an old fashioned radio as it would be less confusing to my mother and obviously myself but it doesn't seem possible to get RTÈ on DAB radio?

Is the best idea to get a smart speaker like Alexa, connect to hospice wifi and set it up, download the Irish radio app and ask it to play RTÈ? The nurses would have to ask it to play and ask it to stop for her, which I know would confuse my mum a bit but I can't see another way.

I could get an iPhone and install the app and leave it there if the nurses could turn it off and on but this seems like making more work for them (and I would have to get the phone).

Is there an easy way of sorting this which I am missing? Any help would be very gratefully appreciated. Thank you.

No, you won't get RTE on dab radio in England. We don't even get it in the North!

HTruffle · 14/02/2021 21:12

Can you get it on a spare ipad, phone or laptop?

JetBlackSteed · 14/02/2021 21:12

Sorry, pressed post too soon.
Best bet might be an app on a device, but as you say, s9meone will have to start and stop it

TheLovelyJoeDuffy · 14/02/2021 21:15

Agggh thank you jet! I can see I'll just have to go and install a Sky box or something by her bed Smile

Hopefully the smart speaker thing or similar will work. I will ask the (totally amazing) staff tomorrow.

You can get the RTE player app.

nursejekyll · 14/02/2021 21:16

You should be able to download the app on an iPad.

TheLovelyJoeDuffy · 14/02/2021 21:17

I do think I'm going to have get a device. I just thought nicking my sons Echo dot was the easiest option. I don't know. It's like my head is literally a sieve at the moment, I can't seem to keep a thought in it for more than a second or process anything, if that makes sense.

I'm very sorry to hear about your mum, OP Thanks

GingerAndTheBiscuits · 14/02/2021 21:20

It’s on Alexa

It’s also on virgin TV if they have that

PetCheetah · 14/02/2021 21:21

Have you tried the LW radio at different times of day? My mum and aunt listen to RTE that way and sometimes the reception is really bad (we think weather seems to make a difference) but often it's fine. It's not so good where I live though so I get it up on my laptop if I want to listen to Joe.

GingerAndTheBiscuits · 14/02/2021 21:21

Or www.amazon.co.uk/TuneIn-Radio/dp/B004GYY714?tag=mumsnetforu03-21 also on Alexa

nursejekyll · 14/02/2021 21:23

I’m so sorry about your Mum op.
You can download the RTE player app to your phone if that would work?

ShaunaTheSheep · 14/02/2021 21:30

DH has set RTE up for his mum on an Echo Dot. She also has a Facebook Portal device, which she has just about mastered for video calls, and that has Alexa also.

TheLovelyJoeDuffy · 14/02/2021 21:31

Thank you, you're all lovely Thanks I think the Echo is the best way forward if the nurses are OK with it.

My mum was only transferred to the hospice on Friday afternoon. She was fit and well until two weeks ago when she suddenly collapsed and the hospital found a large very aggressive brain tumour. The hospice (and the hospital) has been amazing, all the staff are so kind. We brought her cat in yesterday to see her! It's so hard only being allowed two visitors though (hence it would be nice if one could be Joe Duffy Smile)

Thank you everyone

Ah, so that's a "radio radio" if you see what I mean? But (forgive me, I'm so slow atm) but could that get RTÈ if it's not available on DAB radios?

I'm not ignoring any new replies btw, I think I'm going to try and get some sleep if I can. I can't visit until 11 so I have the morning to look at this again. Thank you everyone for taking the time to post. If I sort it out I will come back and update you!

Internet radio. I don't have one, but I would expect you'd be able to set up RTÉ as a preset in much the way you would am FM or DAB station. That could well save your mum having to rely on the nurses. If she's anything like mine shed lie there in silence for hours rather than bother them....
Something like this: www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B08L6TF199/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_fabc_3A9RQQJ06NRV5X8J1BFR?tag=mumsnetforu03-21

idontlikealdi · 14/02/2021 22:00

No you can't set up RTE in England. Doesn't work like that.

TooMuchYarn · 14/02/2021 22:16

I have RTE on for most of the day while WFH and use an internet radio (am living outside Ireland). Once you have set up the channels - you can tune into any radio station around the world - it is just like turning on a regular radio. I find the connection better and more stable than using an app on a device.
Just google Internet Radio.
I have this one - www.soundmaster-audio.com/audio-products/clock-radio/soundmaster-ir5500-internet-radio-with-built-in-speakers/

idontlikealdi · 14/02/2021 23:04

I've just rechecked mine and you can absolutely get it just google and you can pick it up

Hohohole · 15/02/2021 00:04

It's an internet radio too. It would want to be for the price. So sorry about your mum.

MinecraftMother · 15/02/2021 08:00

We've got one of those sticks 🙌

poppycat10 · 15/02/2021 08:39

I was going to suggest the Tunein app, you can get virtually anything on that.
