Unexplained waking with a jump at 2.08am every morning

Hello all,

I'd like to start by saying that I don't think I believe in ghosts or the supernatural, however I am beginning to feel uncomfortable/eery since buying my first home 3 months ago and am hoping for some advice or even just some reassurance!

I moved into my house 1 month ago after spending the first two months renovating/sprucing it up and since moving in have only slept there 80% of the time as I continue to be split across my home and my BFs home.

I am a light sleeper and often briefly wake 2 or 3 times a night.
Since moving into my house, however, I have woken with a jump at the exact same time every morning. I wake with a start and a gasp and immediately check my phone on my bedside table - 2.08am every time.
I have checked my phone to make sure no alarms/notifications are sounding at this time which they are not. When I wake I often listen and look out the windows. Each time the street is deadly quiet and I cannot see anything which would explain my sudden waking.
To add to the peculiarity of this, when I stay at my BFs home I do not wake at this time.

AIBU to feel eery and a little freaked out by this?

Did it happen?! Love the changing the clock by ten minutes idea. Be great to see if you wake at 2.18 or still wake at 2.08 even on new time.

BoarOnTheFloor · 13/02/2021 07:41

Have you seen Ghosts on the BBC? I think Fanny jumps/falls out of the window in the middle of the night at the same time. They try and get her to do it at a different time and it doesn’t work. Could it be something like that?

Icandothis123 · 13/02/2021 07:51

The milkman who delivers for our neighbour often wakes us at the same time. Then I started waking at the exact time even when he didn't deliver 😡
That was 2.35am so maybe something like a milk delivery or shift worker?

At 2am approx our boiler always clicks on and off when it's cold, it's the frost guard. Also the internet drops off at 2am and my laptop makes a small beep as it reconnects, I assume the isp do some kind of reset then, maybes it's something like that.

FleshLiabilities · 13/02/2021 08:06

I think the OP has discovered what was waking her up................................and it's eaten her.

This type of explanation is by far the most likely.

I would set an alarm for 2am and then be awake to listen out for any issues.

OP could you please post to let us know you're ok?

m00rfarm · 13/02/2021 08:24

Or wait until the clocks change at the end of march ... if it is paranormal then they probably won't remember the exact date ...

Atalune · 13/02/2021 08:30

Oh god. This is super creepy now.

orchidsstillalive · 13/02/2021 08:40

OP hope you are ok this morning, how did it go? I think you should insist your boyfriend stays with you at least a few nights, things won’t feel as creepy if there’s two of you.

cherryolives · 13/02/2021 08:42

You could always watch a good horror film if your boyfriend can't stay over, you won't feel like you are alone in the house then.

SmudgedWardrobeHamster · 13/02/2021 08:44

@Oysterbabe

Have you recently bought a second hand wardrobe?

OP I had exactly this happen at 3.18am for a couple of weeks. Turned out my phone, which was on silent on my bedside table, did an automatic restart at that time. The restart made the phone vibrate even though it was on silent. The buzzing against the wood of the bedside table woke me up. By the time I woke up the phone had restarted and looked normalnso I didn't realise what was going on (until I had insomnia and saw what was happening).

Doublevodka · 13/02/2021 08:45

Years ago i read about the Amityville story and the time of the murders was 03.15. The story really disturbed me. The next 2 nights I woke up in the night and each time I looked at the clock it was exactly 03.15. It really unsettled me. On the third night i woke up and absolutely would not look at the clock incase it was 03.15. I just knew if it was that exact time again it would totally freak me out!

cortex10 · 13/02/2021 08:48

Like @mincing I had exactly the same problem and now leave my phone on flight mode overnight. Took me quite a while to work it out. In fact I forgot to turn my phone off last night and it happened again.

CaMePlaitPas · 13/02/2021 08:56

Poltergeist.

Rowgtfc72 · 13/02/2021 09:05

Hope you found out what it was.

When I was pregnant I used to wake up at 03:03. No idea why. Dd wasnt born at 03:03. It stopped when she arrived.

SylviaPlath1984 · 13/02/2021 09:05

Welll......???

Misericordia · 13/02/2021 09:18

I thought waking with a gasp might be sleep apnoea and maybe as you go to bed at the same time your sleep cycles might be the same each night

Ameliaaaw · 13/02/2021 09:19

You may (or may not) be pleased to know that I made it through the night in one piece and the attic monster did not get me!
Although I am still none the wiser.
I set an alarm at 2.00am and waited until quarter past, just listening - and nothing!
My boiler is definitely not set to come on at this time although of course it could be some other wiring or piping making a noise - it was deadly quiet for the 15 minutes I was awake though. I also checked flightradar as someone had kindly suggested but nothing at that time!
I will try putting my phone on flightmode although each time when I jump awake the first thing I do is pick up my phone to see if I've had a text come through and my phone has never been restarting or anything - just kindly displaying that it's 2.08 instead to freak me out Smile

I have to admit I've never lived alone before so as you've all said, if it's not something within/outside of the house which is waking me it's likely just my slightly freaked out mind and body clock and I assume when I'm at my BFs I'm more relaxed so sleep past that time

Thanks all!!

My roof trusses always crack around the same time each night, we’ve been here over 25 years so noticed the pattern. It may be something very simple if you can be awake around that time to hear something

cherryolives · 13/02/2021 09:29

We don't set our boiler to come on turn, it just does as it comes on briefly when the temperature drops below 5. Maybe that happens at 2am.

Chickychickydodah · 13/02/2021 09:37

Are you near a train line?
The goods train used to wake me up at 3. Am every night and I’m about half a mile away .

Camdenish · 13/02/2021 11:17

Yes, I wondered about trains. We are over an underground line and when it’s quiet at night we can hear them. I think it’s quite a deep bit of the underground too.
