To ask if anyone knows what this thing is on my apple?

Came across this on the stem bit of an apple didn't really think much of if and binned it (and then binned the whole pack and took the bins out, just incase!) But now I'm thinking is that a slider thing??
Or mold?
I was fine until I googled where pink lady apples come from- Australia and other hot climates apparently!

I'm interested in any replies; I would have washed/cut that bit off - and certainly wouldn't have binned the lot. I need to know for future reference...

Lockheart · 12/02/2021 18:14

It's just a bit of web. Just wash them, why would you throw away perfectly good food?

MustardMitt · 12/02/2021 18:15

Confused you threw away the whole pack and then took the bin out because of that? Looks like a tiny bit of mould to me, and if you’re insinuating spiders wouldn’t you have seen them?

funinthesun19 · 12/02/2021 18:18

I would have done the same as you op.

Amsmdm · 12/02/2021 18:19

I was worried about it being some kind of awful spider web egg sac thing like you get on bananas! Spiders are literally my worst nightmare

It's either a bit of web or it's just a bit of stretched apple skin layer.

Fruit and veg are plants, mostly grown outdoors, sometimes they have outdoor matter on them. It just needs wiping off. Don't throw away good food. If you were really freaked you could have sliced across the top and just got rid of the icky bit.

Surplus2requirements · 12/02/2021 19:10

Fear of spiders is common enough but throwing out a whole pack of apples??

SwanShaped · 12/02/2021 19:16

You could have just poured boiling water on it if you were worried. Just looks like a bit of web maybe.

PlanDeRaccordement · 12/02/2021 19:23

Looks like part of shrivelled up leaf. On apples, usually there is a little leaf by the stem that then dries up and gets brown during packing and shipping.

Sciurus83 · 12/02/2021 19:27

You threw out a whole pack of apples because of that? Blimey.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 12/02/2021 19:53

I am more and more convinced people are psiring threads like these as a joke to get people flip a bit.Confused

SchrodingersImmigrant · 12/02/2021 19:53

Psiring? What?

Amsmdm · 12/02/2021 20:33

I'm really not why would people flip over apples? I've anxiety and OCD so if i'd have kept the apples I'd definitely not have eaten them and would have probably spent the entire time they were in my house checking them like a mad man.

HikeForward · 12/02/2021 20:34

It does look like a spider egg sac, but most likely a U.K. one if the apples were loose. If they were sealed in the packet in Australia check the packet in case the female’s still in there (almost certainly dead after a flight and being transported in subzero temperatures!)

Oysterbabe · 12/02/2021 20:35

You threw away a bag of pink ladies? Someone is doing alright for themselves.

HikeForward · 12/02/2021 20:35

Do you have any more photos?

Amsmdm · 12/02/2021 20:46

HikeForward oh god they were in a packet the type that are in a cardboard tray, with plastic with hole puncher holes in
It was in my kitchen for a couple of days before I opened it but what of there was a spider in there and it crawled out the holes!?

OP posts:
Amsmdm · 12/02/2021 21:06

I had a look at the packet from the bin (I've lost the plot probably) and they're from France which is a lot less concerning

OP posts:
HikeForward · 12/02/2021 21:09

Don’t worry, a spider couldn’t get through those holes unless it was a really tiny one. And she would most probably have been killed by the cold in transit even if she were somewhere amongst the apples.

MrsGogolsGumbo · 12/02/2021 21:25

I did the same with a single apple the other week because I wasn't sure if mould or spider but it was right down the stem.

I am usually not bothered by dirt etc but had a horrible experience with fruit and a creepy crawly right in the middle which I didn't notice until I'd eaten most of the fruit. It really freaked me out and I'm designated creepy crawly catcher in my house!

I wouldn't have thrown out the entire bag but can understand why you did.

HalfGirlHalfCake · 12/02/2021 21:50

and then binned the whole pack and took the bins out, just incase!

Did you then burn your house down, just in case?

Amsmdm · 12/02/2021 21:54

HalfGirlHalfCake

I don't think it's that weird to take the bins out if it was a spider sac, then I don't really want it in my kitchen bin?

You threw out a perfectly good pack of apples then took the bin outside 'just in case'. Buy you failed to burn your house down? Not following through

Alternatively you could have just washed it under the tap

I guess it depends how committed to being irrational you are. No half measures

Chunkymenrock · 12/02/2021 22:05

Holy crap, I cannot believe what I have read. Ffs. What an appalling waste of food over the tiniest thing. Wipe it off. Wash the apples.
