To ask if anyone knows what this thing is on my apple?

Came across this on the stem bit of an apple didn't really think much of if and binned it (and then binned the whole pack and took the bins out, just incase!) But now I'm thinking is that a slider thing??
Or mold?
I was fine until I googled where pink lady apples come from- Australia and other hot climates apparently!

Chunkymenrock- wipe it off and potentially have a bunch of tiny little spider babies scuttle out? No thanks

Are you for real? Or is this a piss take?
Therearenomore · 12/02/2021 22:34

It looks like webbing, caterpillars hatched out of that kind of web from the apples on our tree. It just needs a wash.

Amsmdm · 12/02/2021 22:38

HalfGirlHalfCake- that reply was tounge in cheek but yes I did actually throw the apples away as explained I have mental health issues that would basically make it not worth it to have kept the apples.
However I was genuinely curious as to what it was, but yes I also know that throwing the whole pack out and taking the bins down was probably overkill.

I would have just picked it off and eaten the apple. Confused

do they not spray before transporting to the Uk? If it is a web then wipe the bloody thing off or rinse it Is it cool to be ocd in the Uk ffs
Amsmdm · 12/02/2021 22:48

I mean I genuinely have actual OCD? And no it's not cool it's horrible.

shouldistop · 12/02/2021 22:49

Op I don't have OCD but I do have a phobia of spiders and I'd have throw them out too. Lots of people here clearly don't understand what it feels like to be crippled with fear about something.

MuddyPawPrintsEverywhere · 12/02/2021 22:51

If wiping it off wouldn't have seemed enough of a precaution, I'd just have cut off that part of the apple, taken that out to the bin, inspected the others, and then got on with things.

It's extremely unlikely that a pack of apples would be infested with any sort of dangerous spider.

I love apples. I eat a lot of them and have several apple trees. Most apples in the supermarket have been in a cold storage area for several months by the time it’s February.

Take them out of the cold store and put them in a warmer place eg supermarket shelf. Small amount of mould grows around the stem (not on the Apple, it’s the stem).

Pull the stem and wash the apple. It’s fine to eat it. It’s not a web from an exotic spider.

"You could have just poured boiling water on it if you were worried. Just looks like a bit of web maybe."
I did that once with a banana and was given loads of criticism on Mumsnet for cruelty to unborn spiders ......

Oh my god @anappleadaykeeps your thread is hilarious! Boiling babies!!!

You’re the same poster who was worried about food poisoning from defrosting the freezer and bought a new shower head as it fell in the freezer drawer aren’t you. You were asked many times if you were getting help for your OCD but never replied.

funinthesun19 · 13/02/2021 08:50

All these people getting wound up about the op throwing some apples out Grin

There’s nothing cool and clever about wiping a spider’s nest off an apple and then eating it. Just because you’d do it, doesn’t make your way any better than the op’s. The planet won’t blow up because she’s thrown 6 uneaten apples in the bin. 🙄

Exactly! And those wobbly, wtf emojis too. Wtf? The f is she has OCD. If you don't, top marks to you but try and have some empathy and understanding for someone who may react differently to you because of a mental health condition.
Amsmdm · 13/02/2021 11:03

ThreeTwoOneBlastOff- yes that's me. I've made a self referral for talking therapies so just waiting on the initial appointment, but regardless of the OCD I wouldn't eat a potential spider nest apple
