To think you can't be 'greedy' if you're not overweight

Seems simple to me Confused

If you're not overweight then no matter what you consume you can't be 'greedy'

As you are a healthy weight and BMI and you're just eating to maintain that

OP posts:
Gwenhwyfar · 12/02/2021 21:43

"Gluttonous implies that one 'simply' eats too much. Greedy implies you are depriving others to have for yourself. "

That's not how I've understood the words. Gluttony is greed, but specifically for food. Both mean eating a lot / too much.

I live alone so I don't really get what 'my fair share' means. Am I taking the fair share away from people in very poor countries? Probably yes, but that's our economic system.

Bluesername · 12/02/2021 21:45

Most people eat or drink things they don't strictly need, whatever their body shape. It could be sweet treats, wine, gin, coffee/tea, unnecessarily imported food, takeaway or restaurants, popcorn, 'finest' ranges or all kinds of things. We are all 'greedy' in that respect.

Yes, but if you eat normally the rest of the time, is that really greed?
Winditbackagain · 12/02/2021 22:22

I can be greedy if chocolate is involved. I am a healthy weight, I eat when I am hungry , I binge on crap when I am due on which I feel is me being greedy but I also need it!

RabbityMcRabbit · 12/02/2021 22:30

Oh great, another fat-shaming/body shaming thread. Hmm

mathanxiety · 12/02/2021 23:02

I think you are assuming that overweight people are by definition greedy.

BashfulClam · 13/02/2021 03:37

Ha ha my husband doesn’t gain weight easily but he’s a greedy bastard. He ate 8 bags of crisps and 8 crunchies last weekend plus a chocolate orange, box of maltesers, 2 massive slabs of dairy milk....pisses me off as I moderate my eating.

Luckyelephant1 · 13/02/2021 04:03

I'd say I'm greedy when it comes to chocolate/biscuits in the house as I regularly eat more than my fair share compared to my husband, but he does the same with crisps and other savoury snacks. We are both normal BMI.

What's one of those? (Sorry!)

Iknowwhatudidlastsummer · 13/02/2021 09:33

Not All Fat Are Like That

because on MN excess weight can only ever happen for medical reasons and is NEVER due to excess calorie intake

dayswithaY · 13/02/2021 09:42

I have a BMI of 19 and I'm greedy with chocolate, cakes and biscuits. Never with broccoli.

MacDuffsMuff · 13/02/2021 09:50

Ah ok, thanks!

Cadent · 13/02/2021 10:27

@Eckhart

But they might eat really small portions when they're at home.

So they're greedy on someone else's dime? That's even worse.

MrsJBaptiste · 13/02/2021 10:36

I've just had a bagel for breakfast and feel quite full but will now have a slice of toast with Nutella because I know we have some nice bread in. Therefore I am greedy as I definitely don't need the toast (or Nutella...)

Belledan1 · 13/02/2021 10:38

Do you struggle with your weight OP?

Butchyrestingface · 13/02/2021 10:40

At 5 feet 2, I weighed < 7 stone on my 21st birthday. I was a greedy, overeating wee piglet and I was definitely not eating to "maintain my body weight". I had an extremely sedentary lifestyle. Also appeared to have a very well functioning metabolism.

God, I miss those days. Being built like a fat straw squeezed didn't buy me happiness, but it certainly gave me a better standard of misery.

BorisandHarriet · 13/02/2021 12:08

I just worked out my BMI and it’s the same. I am greedy with broccoli too and always serve myself more than the other members of my family despite us all liking it! I’m greedy with almost everything though. Once something is opened I just eat it all.
Bourbonic · 13/02/2021 12:35

What??

Greed is consuming more than you need. It isn't measured by BMI.

I don't half read some shite on here, and this is definitely up there.

RickiTarr · 13/02/2021 12:38

Bizarre thread, and from a known poster too. Confused

Are you muddling greed up with gluttony @LaurieFairyCake ? Greed is not a concept that solely, or even chiefly, applies to food.

RickiTarr · 13/02/2021 12:42

@Gwenhwyfar

"Are you sure? I'm a size 6. Yesterday i had a miserable day, i went to Tesco and bought a HUGE chocolate birthday cake and ate 3/4 of it by myself. Like, 12 people's worth. Does that not make me greedy?"

Sounds like you undereat, or at least eat a normal amount, the rest of the time so, no.

Ridiculous. Of course greed/gluttony can happen for a day or an hour and doesn’t have to be continuous every day of your life.

Individual acts can be greedy, and they don’t necessarily involve food.

I have to admit, that thought crossed my mind as well.

But what happens in Lockdown, stays in Lockdown...

RickiTarr · 13/02/2021 12:51

Probably fair comment @Butchyrestingface Smile

RickiTarr · 13/02/2021 13:06

Would you view anorexia or bulimia as “medical reasons”? Orthorexia? Where exactly is the line you draw where you deem disordered eating not to be disordered eating? Hmm
Iknowwhatudidlastsummer · 13/02/2021 13:13

what are you trying to say RickiTarr

that being overweight can only be due to a medical reason, or medical disorder?

Spectacularly proving my point here Grin
