AIBU to like hospital food?

Lighthearted obviously!

I recently had to spend the day in hospital twice due to finding out my baby is breech at 38 weeks, and trying to turn it with an ecv (twice).

I've always heard jokes etc about how terrible hospital food is, but having had both lunch and dinner both times, aibu to really like it?? I mean I know it's not brilliant, but I find something about simple, low-quality stodge quite comforting!
Maybe it's just because it reminds me of school dinners! That was certainly the last time I ate a plain cream cracker with cheddar haha! And having to fish the lumps of fat out of my steak pie... Sigh!

I like it as well. Especially that you get pudding Grin

listsandbudgets · 12/02/2021 08:36

I quite like it too especially pudding!!

Right now I'd settle for anything that didn't involve me in planning, preparation or cleaning up afterwards ( though I'd prefer not to go to hospital to achieve it!!)

I had a lovely lamb roast and apple crumble in hospital once! I still think about it and I’ve had roasts at some lovely places 😂it was like the TV dinner roast that my gran used to do us occasionally, out of a box, I loved it!

Having said that I’ve had some horrible ones. Dishwater soup, meat of no known origin kind of things.

I was in with a kidney infection once in South Korea, they don’t have generally have catering facilities in their hospitals at all. You better hope someone brings you food! Very normal to see patients in hospital gowns and drip trollies queuing up in KFC or grabbing some noodles down the road from the hospitals there.

Centaurpede · 12/02/2021 08:39

I had to stay in for a few days, and apart from them getting my choices wrong most of the time I quite liked most of it! The puddings especially 😁

Toottootdrivers · 12/02/2021 08:39

Oh god no. I've only had the misfortune once and honestly it was hard to identify what the mysterious slop on my plate was. I've made DP promise that if we have a second child and I have to stay in hospital that he will bring me something worth eating

JustAnotherUserinParadise · 12/02/2021 08:39

I had apple crumble with ice cream both times 😍😍

I love it! Hot pudding after lunch & dinner? Yes please!

TammyTwoSwanson · 12/02/2021 08:41

It's fine for a couple of days. It reminds me of school dinners in the 90s. But when you're in hospital for weeks/months on end, it's not so great. Luckily at the hospital I was in used to mix it up a bit for those of us in a long time, and would bring us food from the children's menu, or slip in some extra fruit/crackers/biscuits.

JustAnotherUserinParadise · 12/02/2021 08:41

I also just love people bringing me food in general lol... DH does most of the cooking at home and jokes that I only tell him I love him when he brings me food!

I look back fondly on the meal I ate in hospital the day after giving birth to dd. It was some kind of slop that most closely resembled shepherds pie, and it was my first meal in over 48 hours.

JustAnotherUserinParadise · 12/02/2021 08:43

@TammyTwoSwanson yeah I can see that to be fair! I was on the maternity unit though and they have sandwiches, fruit crackers etc available all the time too.

Post-birth hospital toast is food of the gods!

Rosehassometoes · 12/02/2021 08:50

I stayed in with newborn DS for ten days and they fed me as I was feeding him. I enjoyed it too.

CarolVordermansBum · 12/02/2021 08:52

I had an operation in October and the hospital food was absolutely lush, the portions were huge too! Or maybe just the fact someone else made it and brought it to me for a change made it taste extra good!

babybythesea · 12/02/2021 08:53

When I had DD1 I was in for three days. I loved it. No cleaning. No cooking. Food was fine. Someone bringing me toast and hot chocolate at 9.30 at night.

If they hadn’t discharged me there’s a chance I’d still be there. She’s 12.

CaptainCarp · 12/02/2021 08:58

I have been in hospital twice over here.
Once private & I can't remember getting food... I'll I can remember being forced to "eat" was painkillers. They cocked up my meds though so I was barely conscious most of the 24hrs or so I was in thanks to sky rocketing heart rate & BP.

NHS the food was shocking! The best meal I think i had was the one time I was awake for breakfast... It was rice krispies & milk.
All the other food was stale bread / cold dinners / rock hard potatoes. I was meant to be on a high protein diet. I came out of hospital 2 stone lighter than I went in & I was there for 10days.

Oh actually before I got transferred to the above hospital I had been nil by mouth & not had my charts updated. An amazing nurse went on the hunt to get me some food (hadn't eaten in over 48hrs) & came back with a hot chocolate pudding.. It was the best food I had ever tasted!

EssentialHummus · 12/02/2021 08:59

Not exactly the same but I run a food bank and earlier this year we received hundreds of airline meals that weren't needed by the airlines for obvious reasons.

People LOVED them. We had calls for weeks asking if there were any more.

JustAnotherUserinParadise · 12/02/2021 09:02

@EssentialHummus ooh I love aeroplane food too! I think it's mostly about unwrapping all the little pots though...

I used to love airplane food too.

When I was in hospital after having DD for 5 days the best thing was the food, two cooked meals a day and breakfast, it helped break up the day too.

Duggeehugs82 · 12/02/2021 09:03

I love hospital food and also love aeroplane food! And i totally agree i love all the little pots of food and the unwrapping!

Duggeehugs82 · 12/02/2021 09:04

I love bento boxes and i think this is on a similar train of thought!

ivfbeenbusy · 12/02/2021 09:04

I spent 3 weeks in hospital off and on this year due to twin pregnancy pregnancy complications and I loved the food! How does cheapy NHS toast and butter taste so much better than at home?! Also the lamb balti and the cauliflower pasta bake yummy 😋 😋

Crappyfridays7 · 12/02/2021 09:04

I’ve been in a few hospitals in Scotland. The best food was simpsons maternity in edinburgh, puddings were amazing. I was in antenatally so thoroughly enjoyed the food for 2 weeks at a time. I was v bored though.
At john’s in Livingston had nice food too & stirling royal. However my son was in a children’s ward for 5 days and the food was horrible

ivfbeenbusy · 12/02/2021 09:05

Have you had the chocolate concrete and pink custard yet??!

GameSetMatch · 12/02/2021 09:06

YANBU I love hospital food, it’s great not having to cook too! Meals brought to you on a tray in bed that someone else cooked it’s like 5* treatment.
