AIBU to like hospital food?

Lighthearted obviously!

I recently had to spend the day in hospital twice due to finding out my baby is breech at 38 weeks, and trying to turn it with an ecv (twice).

I've always heard jokes etc about how terrible hospital food is, but having had both lunch and dinner both times, aibu to really like it?? I mean I know it's not brilliant, but I find something about simple, low-quality stodge quite comforting!
Maybe it's just because it reminds me of school dinners! That was certainly the last time I ate a plain cream cracker with cheddar haha! And having to fish the lumps of fat out of my steak pie... Sigh!

It was ghastly on my limited forays into hospitals, slightly better in the USA (private health has its perks) but even there I sent out for food. Toast and margarine is not an appropriate meal after giving birth nhs! I actually discharged myself after 8 hours because I was so hungry

Coffeeisnecessary · 12/02/2021 09:46

After the birth of my first child I remember ticking the box for a slice of cake and I was so hungry and looking forward to it, when it arrived it was so small I could have swallowed it whole, I was so disappointed but also thought it was hilarious. I kept it for ages to show people (it was wrapped in plastic obviously)

I also detest airline food, I'm definitely on the fussy side but I cook 99% of everything I eat and do it the way I like it!

The last time my father was in hospital I was amazed at how lovely his meals were !
And he also had the option of small medium large portions !!
I think things have improved x

YouWontBelieveYourEyes · 12/02/2021 09:48

I had lovely food when I had my last DC, had to stay in for about three days.

JustAnotherUserinParadise · 12/02/2021 09:49

I didn't get a hot lunch when I was there but I think I had lunch at a non-standard time!
It's almost making me look forward to staying in after my c section!

I remember how nice it was for lunch and dinner to just arrive at my bedside. It made me feel looked after. I also remember the food tasting pretty good even if the presentation was a bit canteen slop.

I love it too. It is delicious.

It is definitely awful if you are vegetarian, gluten free, allergic to a lot or eg halal .

Hospital I worked in barely catered for vegetarian - vegan not at all . Halal and GF were done with microwave meals ... allergies were an afterthought I think and hardly catered for at all - if you were dairy free you were in a very unfortunate position as nearly everything came bloody smothered in milk , butter and cheese !!

Depends on the hospital. After my daughter was born, I had to stay in for a few days and the food was awful. You picked an option from the menu, and then were brought an obviously pre-packaged and re-heated beige meal. However, I had to stay in with my son in a different hospital recently, and was really impressed with the food. After the kids were fed, we could go up to the cart and all the food seemed as if it had been made on site, the vegatables weren't overcooked, and it was very tasty!

I was supporting one of my you g people who I am a key worker to when she was admitted into hospital recently.
The food she was given was an absolute disgrace. It was shockingly bad. I tried to take a meal in for her but wasn't allowed to. I spent a bloody fortune in the hospital shop buying sandwiches or pasta meals to supplement the atrocious food to keep her energy up.

violetbunny · 12/02/2021 10:00

I miss airplane food Grin

notacooldad · 12/02/2021 10:03

Just to add to my post, the young person was in hospital for over a month. It was the same or similar food choices every single day.
I know a month stay is not typical but even after a few days the options would drive you nuts!

YABVVVU.

I miss airplane food
Especially Lufthansa. Even though you are on a short European flight you get a decent cake and glass of wine if you want!

SquirtleSquad · 12/02/2021 10:04

I was in for 3 weeks before and 1 week after DTwins were born, i loved it too Grin

SquirtleSquad · 12/02/2021 10:06

Although the first day I couldn't work out how many boxes to tick and I ended up ordering cheese mash with beans by accident - it was epic Grin

The food at our hospital is really good. Basic but good. They sell the same food in the hospital canteen and pre covid people in the area or that live nearby would go in the hospital just to use the cafe.

They sold the most amazing, chicken tikka lasagne I've ever had too. 😋

Weirdly, despite the fact I’ve had it, I can’t remember NHS hospital food apart from drinking tea from a plastic sippy cup and one amazing sausage roll.

I do remember having a cup of tea after an op in a private hospital and it was a teapot and cup&saucer affair (with shortbread). I’m still amazed now.

Chicken Tikka.... lasagne...?!

Midwife1997 · 12/02/2021 10:22

When I was an inpatient a few years ago I ordered an omelette...thinking it would be a safe bet. What I got was an omelette covered with gravy. Oh my life.

Midwife

JesusAteMyHamster · 12/02/2021 10:26

@SatsumasOrClementines it was the hospital that introduced me to it. It's really nice. Just make like a normal lasagna but using chicken tikka sauce instead of ragu.

SlipperTripper · 12/02/2021 10:33

The cheesy buttery jacket potato and ice cream I had after giving birth and subsequent emergency surgery, whilst still in the delivery room, off my nut on pethidine, was the best thing I have ever eaten

It all came back up again fairly quickly, all over poor DH, but still... was amazing while it lasted

SlipperTripper · 12/02/2021 10:35

Oh, and after my second round of surgery a few months later I actually cried after dropping one of my slices of toast.

Doctor thought I was in pain, but I was just so bloody hungry and too shy to ask for more (didn't think it wise to apply the 3 second rule in a hospital!) 😂
