How is the expression ‘an Indian’ not offensive?

As in, an Indian take away or delivery meal.

I find it quite odd to hear one specific type of cuisine referred to like this. Would you say “ we’re going for a French tonight” or “he invited me to his place for an Italian”? Somehow it seems dismissive and disrespectful.

For full disclosure, I’m not Indian but my husband is of Asian ancestry and our children have dual heritage. I’m British (first generation migrant). I was born and brought up in North America and can’t remember the expression ‘an Indian’ ever being used as short for Indian food before I moved to Britain.

I am having an Arab tonight 😁

@Handsoffstrikesagain

Ah I think I’ve I know who you mean simon. Gosh perhaps it’s not a satirical act after all?!
It's interesting how some posters really do leave out bits of info whilst claiming 'they have it all'. Wink

Anyway, yes most of the food we eat is from 'forrin' sources.

AIMummy · 14/02/2021 15:22

Crucial bits of info*

SchrodingersImmigrant · 14/02/2021 15:27

And don't forget drinks! Forrin as fuck

@Handsoffstrikesagain

I didn’t put her name in Al as I don’t think it’s fair. I also may be completely wrong but a lot of the things ‘fit’.
Hands sorry I didnt make it clear -I wasn't talking about you but was referring to 'that person' and their views.

VeganVeal · 14/02/2021 15:59

Of course there is a full English, but do other countries have similar? A full Islandic, a full Croatian?
I know of a woman on our estate who's had a full Brazilian
@ThaimForTea,I think some sort of linguistic police force should conduct a survey of food providers and assess their level of outrage.
The worrying part is that they’d have a queue round the block for the jobs! Job spec to include “oversensitivity and a wobbly upset voice” Grin

randomer · 14/02/2021 16:24

Big boots, piercings, long blond hair and a bobble hat also needed.

Smallgoon · 14/02/2021 16:26

Not that I would ever eat foreign food. I don't even eat British gravy and detest curry!

"Egg and chips".

Aren’t chips Belgian?

Xenia · 14/02/2021 17:48

I don't eat chips either actually......

randomer · 14/02/2021 17:53

Xenia, I'm bored.......what do you eat?

Pluas · 14/02/2021 18:01

Now now, what @Xenia eats is irrelevant, but she definitely has three children in private education since they were in utero.

Egg, no.

Chips, yes, of course.

Frits met. Oorlog sauce is the best with chips.

Nothing like frits met at the beach, watching the sun go down over the English Channel.

Newkitchen123 · 14/02/2021 18:11

Well I'm looking forward to the salons reopening so I can go for a Brazilian
Unless of course that's offensive

PoochiePlush · 14/02/2021 18:13

@Yellownotblue

Maybe it’s a class or regional thing. I literally have never heard anyone say ‘going for an Italian’. It’s just “lesser” (ethnic) cuisines that are referred to that way.

I just posted out of curiosity. No need to get all agitated. I’ve read all the answers and taking it all on board. I’m interested in linguistics.

"Lesser ethnicities.

Oh. My. God.

Seriously OP, I mean this kindly....but FFS!

GreenlandTheMovie · 14/02/2021 18:14

Pluas Adjectives used as nouns ‘offend’ you? You must really struggle.

I hate this as well. "I'm chill". "I'm tan". My teeth grind involuntarily every time I hear or read those.

Jollygoodtime · 14/02/2021 18:23

Someone up thread keeps talking about how Indian food isn’t usually made by Indians. If the restaurant is labelled a Bangladeshi/Nepalese I will call it that, however they often call themselves an Indian and so that’s what I will call them. Also I don’t say going for a curry but don’t think it’s assuming all they do is curry. If I offered to phone for pizza, it’s probably somewhere that does pasta or phoning for chips, pretty sure you could order other stuff too. It’s just the most common type of food they probably eat from there.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 14/02/2021 18:28

Lots of popular places I know are owned and staffed by different nationalities than what they sell.
Lebanese by Moroccans, Japanese by Greeks, Pizza by Lybians, Indian by Pakistanis, American style takeaway by Jordanians. It also applies to shops. I knew few polish shops owned by Kurdish.
It's ok to use what they market themselves as...
