To want to buy a mattress without trying it?

So I’m in pain. A lot of it, my back kills me every morning after 3-4 hours of broken sleep on a lumpy cheap 5 year old mattress. I need a new mattress, we were going to buy one then covid hit and it all went pear shaped now we are ready to buy again and obviously shops aren’t even open let alone to allow us to lay on a mattress, but I have no idea when we will be allowed to try mattresses again, I can’t deal with this any longer! I thought my husband was okay with buying online so I did a tonne of research and thought okay I’ve found a new bed and a selection of new mattresses asked my husband for his opinion and he lets loose the ‘we can’t buy a mattress without trying it first’ but he could fall asleep on cobbles I swear so to him it’s not a problem to stick with the one we have until we are allowed to try some. Am I being unreasonable to want to stick to my guns?

I’ve been contemplating buying a new mattress as well and wondering how to do this in lockdown, so following with interest. I’ve been hesitant because of not being able to try them out. However I think some suppliers offer a money-back-if-you-don’t-like-it deal I believe? Maybe that would reassure your DP?

As @Bionicname said there are quite a few companies who give you a set period to return the mattress if you’re not happy with it.

We've bought two mattresses during the last lockdown. Admittedly they were two mattresses the same. I ordered one as I was absolutely fed up, it sounded and looked (in the pictures) very similar to the premier inn mattress that we had both slept really well on so I bit the bullet and ordered. I absolutely love it. DH then tried it, agreed it was amazing so we ordered another for the spare room.

We recommended it to our friends who have also bought one the same and absolutely love again they love it.

To be fair it is a king size mattress, with 2500 springs and a lovely cushion top for £450, so I thought it was worth a go. If it had been a lot more expensive, I probably would've waited.

We bought a simba mattress the 5000 spring one. It was expensive but worth it! I have good night sleep every night now. Though don't buy the pillows- not enough stuffing.

NorthernBirdAtHeart · 11/02/2021 17:53

Do it!
I bought a mattress without trying it first. The Simba, from John Lewis. Our old mattress was also 5yrs old, had springs in it and was so uncomfortable I was waking up more tired than when I went to bed.
Honestly the Simba is the best (compulsive) purchase I’ve ever made. It arrived rolled up in a box and my first thought was ‘that’s never a king size mattress’. Once you open the air locked bag, it expands and I’ve slept so much better since, and although my back will never be pain free (lots of failed operations), it’s like sleeping on a cloud.
Best. Nights. Sleep. Ever.

Bionicname · 11/02/2021 17:57

@CoxwellHuge may I ask what mattress brand that was? I always used to sleep well in a Premier Inn

SchrodingersImmigrant · 11/02/2021 18:07

I bought eve hybrid without trying it. It's great for me. It's nice and doesn't bounce like some cheaper spring ones. It was on massive offer. I was fully prepared to go through a headache of returning it and kept the oold one by the wall for a month. I am still surprised i actually liked it😂

Letseatgrandma · 11/02/2021 18:12

We have just bought a Premier Inn mattress-we always sleep well when we stay there and it’s been fab. It’s a Hypnos one but bought through Premier Inn-has great storage underneath as well.

lidoshuffle · 11/02/2021 18:12

I bought a mattress untried from John Lewis in the sales - reduced by over a grand so too good to miss. It's wonderful!

I think if you get the right hardness for your weight and know if you want a pocket sprung or memory foam (I really don't recommend the later personally), and it's decent quality, I don't think there's a lot of difference and not worth trying loads.

Himawarigirl · 11/02/2021 18:14

Lots of brands have trial periods so that can give you peace of mind. I returned one so they do work.

CoxwellHuge · 11/02/2021 18:15

@Bionicname the mattress is an Edwin & Taylor, we bought one with a bed for my son a few years ago but was a different style, same manufacturer. I tried to get ours from the same place but was sold out however I found it even cheaper at Bedkingdom online. Have tried to copy a link below, hope it works. The mattress is firm-ish underneath but with a lovely soft topper, we both thought it was a lot like the premier inn ones and we slept so well there.

I always recommend the Hovag IKEA mattress. Very comfortable.

GoofyIsACow · 11/02/2021 18:18

Interested in this, we are in the same boat, our bed collapses during the night!
Watching with interest!

Smashedavacado · 11/02/2021 18:19

We bought an Emma mattress during the last lockdown and we love it! . Mattresses really do depend on the individual but at least you can return if necessary.

tealandteal · 11/02/2021 18:20

I ordered a new bed and mattress after Christmas which were delivered last week. Did loads of research before ordering and it's like sleeping in a hotel bed each night (a good one!)

teenagetantrums · 11/02/2021 18:21

We bought one without trying. It's not the best but my hips and knees font ache in morning so better than the last one🤣

kittykat7210 · 11/02/2021 18:21

@AdditionalCharacter interesting, that’s the lumpy cheap one we are trying to get rid of! It was fine for the first 6 months, really comfy, then it all went down hill! Never again will I buy a cheap mattress!

@lidoshuffle oh why don’t you recommend memory foam, we were looking at temper or eve hybrid!

Bought one from Argos. A cheapie- but we both agree it’s lovely... disclaimer: our old one was 21 years old. So ANYTHING would be more comfortable.

CatalinaCasesolver · 11/02/2021 18:32

Ergoflex memory foam - amazing, just like a tempur but cheaper, can also return in 30 days if you don't like it.

PlanDeRaccordement · 11/02/2021 18:34

I always buy online without “trying”. You can’t tell a mattress is good by lying on it for a few minutes anyway. Just research a good brand and model based on your needs and preference.

GeorgiaGirl52 · 11/02/2021 18:35

Five years isn't that old for a mattress. Have you tried turning and flipping it?

lidoshuffle · 11/02/2021 18:35
@lidoshuffle oh why don’t you recommend memory foam, we were looking at temper or eve hybrid!
Kittykat, I had a Tempur - paid about £2k and hated it from night 1, although it seemed so comfy in JL. It was so 'dead'; no spring to it, even changing position required having to hoik myself around.

It gave off a funny chemical smell and quite low on the base too so getting out out bed was more of an effort. The first morning with my new pocket sprung one I flew out like a jack-in-the-box and nearly hit the wall! Grin

Leaninghouse · 11/02/2021 18:37

We recently bought online untried, we chose a company that do a sleep trial but so far we are happy

PamDenick · 11/02/2021 18:39

I've just ordered one.
Have no idea if we will like it.

The only thing is that it had to NOT be a bastard memory foam.
We flipped ours and it is full of stinky mould.
It's absolutely revoting.

I hate hate hate hate hate memory foam.
