Sense of guilt.. should I have covid vaccination?

Hi all, I’m 30 and a mother of 2. My oldest is 10 and autistic. He has an EHC plan, gets DLA and I receive Carers allowance for him. I keep reading that unpaid Carers are in line to get the vaccine in group 6.

Should I?

I’m young and healthy but my biggest worry is what if something happens to me. I have a dp who is not ds’s dad. He is a great stepfather but has no legal rights if something happened to me. DS does not see much of his dad!

I’ve done an e-consult to query the above and register as a carer and they’ve got back to me and asked for me to provide evidence then I can be listed as a carer. The woman I spoke to was fab.

Anyway, I do feel guilty. I know by the time it comes around the most vulnerable will be vaccinated but I’ll be having it before my parents and in laws who are late 50’s and early 60’s and I’m sure they will have something to say about it!

Aibu to just have it? Surely the only way out of this mess is for everyone who can get it does get it as soon as they can! (if they want to of course).

Is anyone else having it for similar reasons?

Definitely have it! As the people doing the allocating think you should be getting it, then it's right that you should have it :)

MissMarpleDarling · 11/02/2021 16:52

@angel2702 but OP said she had to show a carers allowance letter and people get that who don't work so they won't be forced to get a job, or who earn a very small amount. Maybe they will accept a DLA entitlement letter instead. Interesting thread!

@MissMarpleDarling

How do they work this out as my son has autism and gets middle rate DLA low rate mobility but I'm not eligible for carers allowance as I work and earn above the £125 a week or whatever it is. They surely can't just let carers who don't work get it? Would anyone know? YANBU OP get it x
That’s frustrating. I did wonder this too! I have a friend who Carers for her elderly father but does not get Carers so an excellent point. It doesn’t seem fair. Perhaps speak to your surgery (maybe an e-consult as soooo busy) and ask advice! Provide evidence of his DLa and does he have ehc plan you could provide? Definitely worth an ask for sure!

Yes. Absolutely take it.

I am the main carer for my autistic dc.........I will be having the covid vaccine as soon as I am offered. I worry who will look after dc if I get ill.

Don't feel guilty..........there is a very good reason why carers have been put in group 6. I doubt your in laws would be stepping up to look after your dc if you were ill ...........take the vaccine and feel no guilt.

If you receive carers then you can use that as proof but receiving carers is not a required for being added as a carer. If you don’t receive carers you could use DLA or just get the GP to cross reference the person you care for’s medical record which would show they have the need for a carer. You will then be added on their record and yours as their carer. If they are not at the same GP practice you have to get their consent and their GP will write a letter confirming their needs and that you are their carer. If you are registered with a local carers group they can also provide details.

No one's safe until we're all safe - have the vaccine as soon as you're able and do not feel guilty about it.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 11/02/2021 20:25

Of course you should. Don’t think twice.
Just don’t tell anyone who might have a go because it’s ‘unfair’.

Tal45 · 11/02/2021 20:30

I think everyone should have it as soon as they can. x

peak2021 · 11/02/2021 21:02

Feel zero guilt if you are entitled to be in group 6, which seems to be from your description.

MadeOfStarStuff · 11/02/2021 21:19

YANBU to take up something you’re entitled to

If you’re worried about how people will react then just don’t tell them

lazee · 23/02/2021 17:24

Oh have it love!
Ignore the haters!
( I teach young people very similar to your son)
Do it!

Moulesvinrouge1 · 23/02/2021 17:46

@Aprilx

I think it is a bit selfish at this stage when you clearly are very low risk.
She may be ‘low risk’ but if carers are unfortunate enough to become sick with it then there is much more pressure on social care which would need to possibly step in and also the nhs?! There is a reason carers are in this bracket. OP have the vaccine, and feel no guilt whatsoever.
Hhusky · 23/02/2021 17:49

I'm not having it at the moment due to personal issues. It's based in science and NHS guidance as to why I'm not having at the moment. Not saying I won't ever have it, just not at the moment. It's your choice to have it or not to have it.
