To say that this is why people don't answer doors

There a number of scams such as this one where a "damsel in distress" will get into your house and do god knows what.

www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-9244545/Moment-woman-caught-doorbell-cam-trying-way-house-shouting-need-help.html

All of you devil-may-care door openers are potentially welcoming this into your home.

There is no reason to answer the door to unannounced callers.

YABU - I am willing to gamble my life and answer the door at anytime
YANBU - Not answering the door if I'm not expecting anyone

My meters were outside but we had a porch built so they are now in the porch. All the houses in this street have them outside in cupboards.
I don't want a smart meter but SSE email me and I provide the reading so there's no need for anyone to need access.

Bookwords · 10/02/2021 19:36

I never open my door either, don't see why I would ever need to

Really!?!?

You don't get parcels, sign for post?

SchrodingersImmigrant · 10/02/2021 19:38

I've always had meteers inside either under stairs on in a cupboard in a living room or kitchen

earsup · 10/02/2021 19:41

I never randomly open the door...I always check thro peep hole and window first but thats because I used to have an ex colleague / sort of friend, female stalker....who would just turn up and knock frantically to get attention over any old nonsense..!!

So many sneery, clueless posts. I open my door some of the time if it's unexpected, but that's because I now have a security gate over it. I wouldn't open it after 9pm.

I'm in an average London suburb but have had someone so drunk they barged their way into my house as they thought it was theirs, Nottingham knockers galore, a scammer knocking very late at night saying he needed money for a taxi to take his wife to hospital, Jehovah's witnesses constantly visiting, a mentally ill neighbour trying to break my window and door with a piece of wood, and obviously chuggers. There has been a spate of break-ins in my area by people pretending to be delivery people then rushing the house.

If I'm not expecting a friend or delivery, then 99% of the time it's going to be a stressful experience, so why would I open it? Neighbours text me if they need something, they know I don't always answer the door.

Emeraldshamrock · 10/02/2021 19:45

Get it bricked up? 👏🤣

Yeah all murderers and attackers are nocturnal 🙄

How so? If the knock is before 9pm then surely you've deemed it safe?

Madness!

Tigger001 · 10/02/2021 19:51

I never open our door after about 17.00. Everyone who knows me would drop a txt first, so it ultimately, is going to be someone mithering for something so I don't bother.

Popcornriver · 10/02/2021 19:58

I usually answer unless I'm in the middle of something. So unless I'm expecting a parcel I'm not going to rush out of the bath for example. And we have an elderly neighbour that knocks occasionally that I'd hate to ignore. However, I once had a rather odd and frightening experience with a strange person at the front door when I was alone with two small DC. It really freaked me out and I did stop answering the door completely to unannounced calls for a while.

Rewii · 10/02/2021 19:59

I have my doorbell off on weekdays as I'm working but when I'm not I'd answer the door anytime, if it was the dead of night I'd probably stick my head out the window to check first though.

MintyMabel · 10/02/2021 20:20

Years of experience has taught me that it's never anyone worthwhile.

That’s just sad.

Yesterday at our door we had DD’s friend with some cake she made, and a neighbour coming to thank us for clearing the snow from her paths.

The day before it was a parcel from Amazon my sister sent.

At the weekend there was a flower delivery from my mum.

I’ve been answering my door for nearly 40 years and at no point has it been anything dangerous. Ridiculous to refuse out of fear.

murbblurb · 10/02/2021 20:22

I have an amazing device called a window. I can look through it and see who is at the door. No internet required.

Nicknacky · 10/02/2021 20:28

@MintyMabel I agree, I went to a house much further up the street today to deliver a card that was wrongly delivered to me and I thought might have been theirs.

They didn’t answer, but I’m fairly certain they weren’t in but equally they valued have been one of these posters that don’t see the point in answering the door.

Elbels · 10/02/2021 20:30

I always thought I was relatively risk averse but clearly the fact I open the door whenever anyone knows makes me akin to bungie jumping on a fraying rope over a pit of crocodiles.

We had a knock today while I was in a meeting, I apologised, left the call briefly, opened the door and got given a bottle of champagne. Good things happen when you open doors!

You do realise not everybody's houses are set up exactly like yours don't you?

PandemicAtTheDisco · 10/02/2021 20:43

It really depends on the area you live in.

When I lived in a city in a relatively nice area next to a dodgy area then I would never open the door at night and extra security was vital. An attempt was made to break into my house after my housemates had gone away and I was left alone for a few nights.

I lived on a main street on a route out of a small town - the drunks would stagger back home past my house and knock on doors if the lights were on. I wouldn't answer the door but my partner always would.

I live in a better area now but I've still had several unwanted, unknown late night callers. I've opened the door and always managed to deal with them safely but still called the police twice because I was worried about my neighbours being unable to deal with them.

I've never been afraid to answer the door in all the other places I've lived.

I can top that at 57 years! Even the desperate two lads, one of which had cut his arm and could see the muscle, then passed out outside our house. His mate frantically knocking. His mum was so pleased we opened the door, got him blankets to keep him warm and called the ambulance.

We lived proper rural for over a decade and had our share of broken down cars and “can my toddler use your loo!” visitors.

Puffylamp · 10/02/2021 20:59

Due to my job where I hear all sorts of nasty stuff, and a deep love of serial killer documentaries, I look in the window first Grin

Nicknacky · 10/02/2021 21:02

@Puffylamp I deal with nasty people almost every day at work too, I answer my door without looking!

Floridaflipflops · 10/02/2021 21:08

They must be travelling about. I’ve seen two more instances of this posted on SM. One a woman distressed and another one where a woman is distressed and looking for her puppy which she claims is in the house owners back garden

MissingLinker · 10/02/2021 21:13

I've lived in a variety of properly shit areas in my time and have always answered the door. I don't think I know anyone who doesn't (granted, I haven't had any conversations about it but everyone I've ever stayed with has always answered the door).

dementedma · 10/02/2021 21:20

Our postie and parcel delivery people just open our door and put stuff in the hall. Cant remember the last time I locked the door during the day
