Treadmill upstairs, yay or nay?

We live in a new build. Don't have room downstairs. Would you put it upstairs?
If it makes a difference it's electric not manual.

Yabu- no it will be too noisy
Yanbu- yes it will be fine

PS @mnhq we need a voting system for chat please Grin

Our Technogym one was quite silent except if you started sprinting at max speed but the issue you need to consider is getting it up the stairs.
Noise from upstairs or downstairs won’t be much different . It pays to spend more on a good one.

TheNestedIf · 10/02/2021 03:26

I did vote YABU, but you sound like a decent sort and it's not meant unkindly. Your neighbours would probably hate you if you did put the treadmill upstairs, quite aside from how it would affect your own family. You've thought about the noise. That's a lot more than many people would have done.

DramaAlpaca · 10/02/2021 03:28

I wouldn't.

All you'll hear downstairs when it's being used is a constant 'thump, thump, thump' from above from the runner's feet.

Unless your house is detached your neighbours won't thank you either Grin

Also, it might well be too heavy for the floors upstairs, ours certainly would be.

Ours is in the garage and from the kitchen I can hear 'thump, thump, thump' whenever it's in use.

Gobbeldegook · 10/02/2021 08:11

Thanks for your input. I wonder if I could make room in the kitchen. When we eventually get round to buying I'm gonna make having a garage a priority for this reason.

Its noisy either way. We have a gum room in the basement and i can hear thumping 2 floors up when someones using it.

LilaButterfly · 10/02/2021 08:19

Gym room*

StCharlotte · 10/02/2021 08:24

We have a cross trainer and a rowing machine upstairs (you'd laugh so hard if you saw us!) but the room they're in is adjacent to next door's bathroom and both are fairly quiet. A treadmill would drive me mad though.

IReallyNeedMoreGin · 10/02/2021 08:34

Depends on whether or not you can even get it up the stairs. We bought one and even in bits (before putting it together) we couldn't get it up the stairs. We could barely move it between 2 of us and when we did get it to the bottom of the stairs, there's no way we'd have been able to manoeuvre it up. The base is waaaaay bigger then we thought it would be! So now it's in the lounge. 😁

Mydogisagentleman · 10/02/2021 08:40

DH has one on the 3rd floor.
He uses it for 20 minutes at a time and listens to a record.
I’m certain that is why Derek and Sandra dislike us so much

filka · 10/02/2021 08:46

Upstairs probably has suspended floors, whereas downstairs may have concrete. The noise from vibration of the machine with a person running on it will get amplified.

ChazP · 10/02/2021 09:55

We had ours upstairs for a few years. We put it on an old bit of carpet to dull the sound. It was fine. It’s never going to be used for hours at a time. My partner will go on it for about 30-40 mins 3 times per week, and not at stupid hours. I don’t think it’s a problem being upstairs.

IusedToBeYoung · 10/02/2021 10:09

We have ours upstairs. Was an absolute bugger to get up there though. Detached house so no neighbours to upset. Hear a bit of thumping at high speed but its not above a room we use often so guess that helps.

Bluntness100 · 10/02/2021 10:13

It’s when you’re running on it obviously, it thumps, if you’re small and light then the noise will be much less than if you’re big and heavy, either way though for the time you’re running it will be noisy.

Hobbesmanc · 10/02/2021 10:15

Mines in the garage.

Its super heavy and deffo would cause noise through the ceiling from the step impact . If it's going on carpet you need to be careful as they need lots of lubricant

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 10/02/2021 11:51

go for a run and save the money you would have spent for a house deposit?
Agree with PP comment about suspended floors, and if it's a new build that's been purchased to rent out, probably not super solid sound/vibration-wise.
If you do get one and have it upstairs, be considerate about not using it very early or late in the evening - it'll impact your neighbours, not just you.

Gobbeldegook · 10/02/2021 12:50

It's free we're getting it off a friend who no longer needs it. I can't run outside, people will see me.
Think Phoebe from friends 😂

LaLoba · 11/02/2021 00:38

I’ve got one in the garage, much prefer running outside but when my foot issue flares I trip over my own feet so the treadmill is safer! I feel pretty aware of potential neighbour irritation even on a concrete floor, so I use it in daytime hours only. Upstairs would be very intrusive for other people, I think.

CoRhona · 11/02/2021 00:53

I think you might be underestimating how massively heavy they are!

Gobbeldegook · 11/02/2021 08:38

Well friend said a 100kg but dh regularly lifts 50kg at work so figured it was doable between us Confused 😂
It's the noise I'm concerned about. I'm gonna see how it goes in the kitchen. It folds so shouldn't swallow the room too much

SchrodingersImmigrant · 11/02/2021 08:43

I had it upstairs but not above main living area, you could still hear ot everywhere. I would happily put it even above living room, but wouldn't work out when people are watching tv.
Just keep it further away from neighbours. Let's be honest, you won't run for hours on end because the leccy bill would bankrupt you, so the noise under an hour a day in some normal time isn't going to kill anyone.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 11/02/2021 08:43

And yes. Heavy bastards! But dh and i manged just fine to take it upstairs.

bebanjo · 11/02/2021 08:48

We have one in the loft convention.
We could not get it up the first step.
I rang a removed company who came and took it upstairs for us.
Never had a problem with noise.

Gooseysgirl · 12/02/2021 08:15

Our nasty next door neighbour has one in her loft (semi-d)---- and honestly the noise is horrendous. She sounds like an elephant charging across the savannah when she runs in it. We are fantasising about 'Nellie' crashing through her ceiling... If you have neighbours who will be affected, please agree a time with them when it's ok to to use it. If you're detached, yes it will be noisy but if it's only for a short time every day I don't see the problem.

AlwaysLatte · 12/02/2021 08:22

I've never understood treadmills. Why not just go out for a run??

PurpleFlower1983 · 12/02/2021 08:25

We have ours on the third floor, it is noisy but neither of us a serious runners do it’s only for an hour maximum.
