If you spoke to somebody on a Sunday morning and they referred to something that was happening ‘next Saturday’ would you think it meant the next Saturday coming i.e. ‘this Saturday’ or would you think it meant the following Saturday after?

DH and I have differing opinions on this so thought I’d take to mumsnet to settle the debate.

YABU = this Saturday coming
YANBU = the Saturday after next

I always get confused with this but I'd assume 6 days time not 13 days time

steppemum · 09/02/2021 14:37

this saturday. But I woudl ask for clarification

DeeThree · 09/02/2021 14:38

On a Sunday I would assume it's the following Saturday. Monday could go either way, from Tuesday on it would mean the Saturday after. No idea why!

Okokokbear · 09/02/2021 14:38

Which one are you op?

Same4Walls · 09/02/2021 14:39

I would assume the Saturday in 6 days time not the one after that but I always get confused when people say next whatever day as they often don't mean the closest day.

WhatsErFace2020 · 09/02/2021 14:39

Person should have said on Saturday to avoid all confusion...but I would still understand it to mean the first Saturday coming up, ie 6 days time

CustardCreamm · 09/02/2021 14:39

The Saturday coming (6 days time)

Snowfordays · 09/02/2021 14:40

@Okokokbear my personal view is that it refers to the next Saturday coming. DH’s view is that since Saturday of the previous week has already passed, the correct term would be ‘this Saturday’ therefore by ‘next Saturday’, it refers to the one after Confused

RuggerHug · 09/02/2021 14:40

This Saturday is this coming Saturday, otherwise it's Saturday week imo

SleepingStandingUp · 09/02/2021 14:41

Yes this
Swingometer · 09/02/2021 14:42

Next Saturday is just that!

The one in 13 days would be the 'one after next'

DedlyMedally · 09/02/2021 14:43

I would assume 6 days, because that is the literal "next Saturday", but I'd usually ask for clarification because I know some people (the minority in my experience) would mean 13 days.
BitOfFun · 09/02/2021 14:44

I'd say "this Saturday coming", and "a week this Saturday ".

CatRamsey · 09/02/2021 14:45

Hmm I'm inclined to agree with your DH. I think it'd expect "I'm doing X on Saturday" to mean the closest Saturday and 'next Saturday' to mean the one after that.

I do go back and forth though and can see why people get confused.

usedandabusedx1000 · 09/02/2021 14:47

I don’t know actually, I’m inclined to say this Saturday, but then, you’d say this Saturday wouldn’t you rather than next Saturday? But on the other hand, the next Saturday, is this Saturday.

Hope that helps.

🤣

nokidshere · 09/02/2021 14:49

I would say this Saturday for the one coming (ie in the same week) and next Saturday for the following one.

Snowfordays · 09/02/2021 15:55

Thank you everyone :D

OP posts:
Godimabitch · 09/02/2021 16:01

If you said this Saturday I'd think you meant yesterday. Next Saturday is the Saturday of next week. Although if you just said "Saturday" I'd think the one that was coming.
But this is why I say "Saturday coming" or "a week on Saturday"

lazylinguist · 09/02/2021 16:02

I would agree with your dh, but tbh I'd be inclined to say 'this Saturday' for the one in 6 days' time and 'a week on Saturday' for the following one to avoid ambiguity.

Shoppingwithmother · 09/02/2021 16:08

I sort of feel that “this” means that the day in question is “this week.” So I would not use “this Saturday” on a Sunday to mean the next Saturday coming. You are in one weekend and the Saturday in question is in the next weekend so “this Saturday” doesn’t feel right.
I would probably say “next Saturday” but also clarify the date. Or alternatively “this Saturday coming” is clearer and can’t really be misinterpreted.

CounsellorTroi · 09/02/2021 16:15

If I was talking on Sunday about an event which was not the following Saturday but the one after that, I would say Saturday week, or a week Saturday.

Muskox · 09/02/2021 16:19

If the conversation took place nearly a week beforehand, I'm with you. But later in the week it would become less clear.

Okokokbear · 09/02/2021 16:19

That's bonkers. Him not you.

dizzydizzydizzy · 09/02/2021 16:19

Always confuses me. I would think the Saturday in 6 days but since I know it always confuses me I always ask the person what they mean.

MrsJBaptiste · 09/02/2021 16:20

The following Saturday so in 6 days time.
