If you spoke to somebody on a Sunday morning and they referred to something that was happening ‘next Saturday’ would you think it meant the next Saturday coming i.e. ‘this Saturday’ or would you think it meant the following Saturday after?

DH and I have differing opinions on this so thought I’d take to mumsnet to settle the debate.

YABU = this Saturday coming
YANBU = the Saturday after next

I'd say "This Saturday" for the upcoming Saturday, and "A week on Saturday" for the following one.

Whatisthisfuckery · 09/02/2021 16:23

Due to the fact that there are 6 days until next saturday I’d assume they meant then. If on tuesday they said ‘next thursday’ however, then I would be less sure.

HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 09/02/2021 16:25

I'd mean the Saturday in 6 days was 'this Saturday' and the Saturday after would be 'next Saturday'

TeenMinusTests · 09/02/2021 16:26

On Sunday morning I'd assume 'next Saturday' was 6 days away.
'This Saturday' I'd be checking they didn't mean yesterday (depending on context)

No one uses next to refer to something in 13 days time, that would be ridiculous and doesn't make any sense

HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 09/02/2021 19:35

This Saturday belongs to this week, so the one in 6 days. Whereas next Saturday belongs to next week so the one in 13 days.

So on a Sunday I might say "do you want to go to the cinema this Saturday or next Saturday?"

OrigamiOwl · 09/02/2021 20:01

To me "next Saturday" means the next Saturday in the calender.

WhoStoleMyCheese · 09/02/2021 21:34

‘Next Saturday’ is after the Saturday of the current week. This Saturday is the Saturday of the current week.
This works in every situation on all days. Even when it’s actually a Saturday :)

Jollygoodtime · 10/02/2021 05:22

It’s a grey area but I’d use it for the one coming. And next again for the one after. If you’re on a night out and say you’ll grab the next taxi, you’d be getting the next one coming, not the one after it.
