To be shocked by such blatant breast feeding shaming

Sat here watching this morning while breast feeding my baby to watch Philip scofield and andrew neil edited by MNHQ at OP's request saying "thats taken a really dark turn", "im trying to get that image out of my head now" when a guest on the show, camilla talked about breastfeeding her children on the daily talk topics. Philip scofields face and gestures were absolutely disgusting! So much stigma around breastfeeding already.. absolutely shocked to see grown men express such breast feeding shaming live on TV.

Can't bear to watch This Morning. Always found Richard Madeley patronising and arrogant and now Philip who's similar. I don't know how he can be considered a serious journo after the cringe inducing coming out " surprise".
And as for Holly's whispery "I'll be your friend for ever and ever " response......!
You'd think considering his alleged tortured decision to come out he'd be a little more enlightened regarding something that some still struggle with due to outdated attitudes!

It's very immature and uncomfortable viewing. I think this is the complaint's email

That’s not Andrew Marr.

After seeing the clip in context I think you are massively overreacting and making this into something it’s not.

Me too. There was absolutely no need for Tominey to even mention breast feeding, it was completely irrelevant to that news story. I imagine that was what the wtaf reactions were about.

You say breastfeeding is revolting but what you mean is women who breastfeed are revolting.

When you share your opinion about breastfeeding you are sharing your opinion about women who breastfeed. Even though you can hold whatever opinion you want, speaking about breastfeeding women in that way is not treating them with dignity and respect is it? And the issue is them doing something biologically normal to feed their infant.

Whether you are male or female, it's still treating other adults like shit.

MindyStClaire · 09/02/2021 12:54

Sure, wtf about breastfeeding but not react like she'd mentioned something repulsive. Surely a more normal daytime TV type response would've been to ask her laughingly if she thought her babies preferred her milk if she was watching something good on TV or something. Not say the conversation had taken a dark turn.

GreyHare · 09/02/2021 12:58

Surely the 'dark turn' was her threatening to shove the keyboard somewhere so jokingly inciting violence not that she was being 'milked' but I'm not looking to get my knickers in twist about breast-feeding 🤷🏻‍♀️

81Byerley · 09/02/2021 13:03

I don't know why you're going on about Phillip . I don't think this is anything to do with what he thinks about breast feeding. His reaction was to her turn of phrase , which also put in my head a completely different picture than of her breast feeding ....and it was definitely a very dark picture!

Crabbypaddy · 09/02/2021 13:11

I think his facial expression was more directed at this camilla woman’s choice of wording. My face looks the same hearing the phrase “being milked by children” bizzare haha. We get it, you breastfeed and feel personally attacked...yawn. Snowflakes

Cam77 · 09/02/2021 13:17

Obviously they were put responding to her saying she breastfeeds her three children, but rather the specifically weird way she phrased “..I’ll try it while I’m being milked by my three children”. Women don’t “get milked” by their babies, they might feed them milk or give them their milk. It is a strange/uncomfortable image, though I agree they probably shouldn’t have played up to it so much. It’s not about breastfeeding. Stop looking for offense everywhere.

user1471447863 · 09/02/2021 13:28

Schofield is a smug twat & has got even more insufferable since coming out.
Her phrasing was perfectly acceptable in the context of the conversation.

VestaTilley · 09/02/2021 13:29

I didn’t see it, but you should call in and complain.

Hardly a surprise, I expect Schofield is quite a misogynist. Look at how he used his wife.

Lightwindows · 09/02/2021 13:31

I don't think any of them came out of this very well. I don't know why the woman brought up breastfeeding her own children and doing something violent with a keyboard, appreciate it was light hearted but not relevant and not very professional. They were talking about cows being milked commercially not women breastfeeding so not relevant. Andrew and Philip should have been more dignified/diplomatic and not made anything of what she said. They are both experienced broadcasters and could have been more diplomatic. Strange clip but not sure it's breastfeeding shaming just a load of highly paid people putting their feet in it who should know better

MagnoliaBeige · 09/02/2021 13:35

I think the “dark turn” comment refers to the implied use of the keyboard rather than the use of the term “milked”

It’s impossible to have a sensible discussion about breastfeeding as anything other than enthusiasm for it is used as evidence of attacking the concept of breastfeeding. But the term milking is horrible and I’d cringe if someone used it to describe feeding a child.

Katie1784 · 09/02/2021 13:37

@Keratinsmooth

Being milked by her children... wtf what a. Weird phrase
I didn't think I was particularly weird phrasing in the context of the item, about cows being milked to the sound of jazz.

It wasn’t. She introduced breast feeding into a conversation about cows being milked. There was absolutely no need for it. Hence the somewhat stunned and incredulous reaction.

Not weird at all. I've seen plenty of similar comments from MNers over the years. She's perfectly entitled to describe her own experience of breastfeeding in any manner she chooses. Should she lie and tell us all it was 'just sooo natural and instinctive and I loved every minute of it' or tell the truth and perhaps make one woman feel a little less alone.
AnneLovesGilbert · 09/02/2021 14:14

At the risk of engaging with a deliberately goady comment, what sort of sensible discussion would you like to have which suggests the concept of breastfeeding isn’t positive? I’m sure you’re aware it’s the biologically normal way in which a human infant is fed, therefore both positive and sensible.

Luckyelephant1 · 09/02/2021 14:25

I hate Phillip Schofield and am definitely an advocate of breastfeeding but I still think found the milking comment pretty cringey tbh, it would have been fine if she'd just said feeding or breastfeeding. I won't be using the term milking when my babies feed as I don't want to feel as though I'm a cow! I guess it's kinda like people cringing at certain terms for private parts.

MustardMitt · 09/02/2021 14:26

So the news was about cows being milked to the sound of jazz music and it making the milk taste nicer.

Woman says if someone tried to serenade her whilst breastfeeding she wouldn’t like it and would hit them with a keyboard.

Philip pulls a face.

Confused sorry but I don’t really get the issue. This wasn’t a conversation about breastfeeding, this was a conversation about cows and literal milking, the woman brought breastfeeding into the conversation and referred to it as ‘being milked’ by her three children.

Schofield had a predictable reaction now he’s gay and clearly feels grossed about by anything to do with females (facetious but not really) the other guy sounded like he was taken by surprise.

You’ve reinforced why I don’t watch this shite though.

JackieWeaverIsTheAuthority · 09/02/2021 14:34

References to feeling like a cow, being milked, hooked up to a milking machine etc are very common in any of the breastfeeding groups/circles/conversations I’ve been part of. It’s just a way for mums to make light of what can be uncomfortable aspects of breastfeeding to help them get through it. It’s really not revolting or unusual. I can totally see why this woman made that reference without a second thought, and why holly didn’t react like she was horrified. Because anyone who has been amongst breastfeeding women will have heard conversations like that and it will all have been said with a laugh. I’m glad she said it on tv. These conversations shouldn’t have to be hidden away in breast feeding groups so as to avoid making men feel queasy.
