Contact NHS if you haven’t had Covid vaccine, over-70s are urged

The Times reports:

Over-70s who have not had a vaccine are being urged to contact the NHS for an appointment in a final drive to offer jabs to all older people by next Monday.

In a reversal of previous pleas for people to wait until they are called, the government now wants any eligible people they might have missed to get in touch this week.

Children and grandchildren are also being asked to encourage older relatives to ask for vaccinations if they have not already received it.

Anyone who has been advised to shield should also book an appointment online or through their GP if they have not already been vaccinated.

Here is the NHS link for eligible people to book online.

I feel like a news headline like "call the nhs" as it's reported in many places is going to have 111 overwhelmed this evening!!

Yes, perhaps it is a good point to note that the number to call to book is 119 Grin

so why have they changed their tune

gisbons · 08/02/2021 18:49

I'm not sure what you mean... it's a last push to 'mop up' the top four groups before the 15th Feb! Smile

@MercyBooth

so why have they changed their tune
Because most people in those categories have been done, so the number of calls will hopefully be manageable and result in them getting the rest done this week.

Our local surgery have been doing this on a local level - one week they put out a message (eg on Facebook) that anyone over 80 who hadn't been done should call (but under 80s please wait to be called); at the end of last week that went down to over 70s.

Rainbowqueeen · 08/02/2021 19:28

This is really fantastic news, it shows how close they are to finishing everyone in the top priority groups and moving on to the next
I guess they are doing it because anyone who hasn’t been contacted, it’s because there letter has gone astray or something.

I think this is just England, just in case anyone in Scotland gets their hopes up

MercyBooth · 08/02/2021 19:57

oh yes its good news obvs

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 08/02/2021 20:03

I think it's good they are encouraging people who have been missed to come forward. Might catch all the people with incorrect contact details on for example.

My 65yo DM is due hers this week.

Over 70s and shielding in Scotland have also been told to phone but I think it is a different number, a dedicated line for vaccine enquiries.
Bairnsmum05 · 08/02/2021 20:30

Maybe flag that this is just England. Remember people from the other 3 countries use this site too. 😁

I don't know about Wales or Northern Ireland but for Scotland this was said: "If you are over 70 and don't have an appointment, call the helpline 0800 030 8013"

BettyBooth · 08/02/2021 20:47

oops, sorry, need my eyes testing obvs. Blush

Thebusiness · 08/02/2021 20:49

Not for Wales is it? My parent is waiting for an appointment but everyone else we know of a similar age, even younger, has had theirs.

bert3400 · 08/02/2021 20:52

I wish my bloody in laws would accept that it's now their turn. They are refusing the vaccine until they get the letter, they have been told that don't need to until I'm blue in the face. They are both 75 .

Updatemate · 08/02/2021 20:54

so why have they changed their tune

Because the vast majority of people in groups 1-4 have now been done and if you (or someone you know in those groups) haven't been called up yet it's more likely an oversight than anything else so the numbers will be relatively low. This coming week we're starting group 5 and there'll be a rush for slots again.

lovelemoncurd · 08/02/2021 20:54

@bert3400 can't you show them the news clip. It is a clear call up for them to book now.

Updatemate · 08/02/2021 20:55

bert3400

Call their GP ask them to send them a letter. They have to provide people info in a form they understand and have generic letters for this purpose.

arethereanyleftatall · 08/02/2021 20:59

Who's next? I think it should be teachers, police force etc

Groups 5-9 are next group 6 includes the clinically vulnerable that weren’t shielding. Last group is over 50s which is group 9.
Updatemate · 08/02/2021 21:04

Group 5 is 65 and over.

Group 6 is 16+ who are 'at risk'

arethereanyleftatall · 08/02/2021 21:08

I wish everyone could be done simultaneously. By magic or something.

They mooted a while ago bumping teachers up the groups. Is that not happening any more?

The second wave of vaccinations is going to be profession-related.
