To spend £2000+ on an oven?

DP seems to think that a good oven costs £400 or less. Last year he bought a £200 single oven off Amazon for our teeny kitchen in our last house, knowing that we would be moving soon. (ie. Knew it was a cheap buy)

For background: We've just moved into a house (we bought it) with an oil fired aga and some crusty awful 70s oven thing.
Fantastically both have died in the first week meaning we have no heating and no oven.

A new boiler looks like £4500, so DP is feeling very sensitive to spending as we weren't anticipating having to immediately replace these things!

My Mum swears that the best thing to buy is a rangemaster. She recently bought a cheaper range oven and hates it. Rangemaster all the way apparently.

Looks like they range from £1500-£2500.

(we have no gas where we live, so it must be electric only.)

We can afford this, but I don't want to throw money away - what do people think is a reasonable price to pay for a double / range oven?

We’re having the kitchen done next year and the whole thing’s centred round the range cooker (not Rangemaster, but the same price bracket) my husband’s been fantasising about for months. We’re also having a new boiler but it’s not costing £4.5, that sounds like an awful lot.

I have a rangemaster 110 dual fuel, with a grill pan on the side. We just LOVE it.... It was £2000, but for us it was worth every penny. We love cooking & enjoy it very much.

We have a ancient stoves range cooker and even with a wonky door that makes it inefficient, it's the best oven I've had by a long chalk. It won't cost £2k to replace with the same brand but then we do have gas so won't need to fork out for one with an induction hob.

TheGonnagle · 06/02/2021 13:48

I bought my range oven from a graded appliance store in Birmingham. You have to go and see them, some are totally knackered, some not so much. Mine has a small scratch on it at the back, cost me £500 including delivery.

VinylDetective · 06/02/2021 13:48

We’re having this one. As he’s the cook, my only say has been the colour!

We live on a tiny island so new boiler involves importing it, or so the local plumber tells us.

It’s a belling, we’ve been very pleased with it.

ISavedAllTheThings · 06/02/2021 13:52

I want a smart oven so I can control it with Alexa or my phone. They're a few thousand. I would say not unreasonable if you've found the oven you want.
The one I have right now was £250, bought when the old one broke and i was a struggling single mum. It has lasted a good length of time and it has loads of options so it is good, but I wouldn't say no to getting my fancy one when this break or a re-do the kitchen.

Movinghouseatlast · 06/02/2021 13:54

It depends on the boiler, for cost. If it is oil then the cost is correct.

I spent a lot more than that on my cooker! Buy cheap pay twice I think. That is as long as you can afford it!

Jengnr · 06/02/2021 13:55

We’ll be moving and putting in a new kitchen. I’ll be spending at least that on the oven.

FoolsAssassin · 06/02/2021 13:56

My Belling range has done 15 years plus, with one repair that DH did. Similar about 1k, not sure I would spend the extra.

ThreeLadsPointingAtAStar · 06/02/2021 13:57

Can’t you have the Aga repaired?

BlueGlasses · 06/02/2021 13:59

I've just splashed out £2k on a Stoves range cooker. Best thing I have ever purchased. Worth every single penny.

Princessbanana · 06/02/2021 13:59

We have a range master and would never but anything else again. It was a great investment and I actually enjoy cooking with it.!

Princessbanana · 06/02/2021 13:59

Buy

Cissyandflora · 06/02/2021 14:02

My electric oven and hob is just single. Cost me 5k. It’s Miele and I treated myself after putting in a new kitchen myself. I’m happy with my oven. Although I don’t use the fancy functions as much as I want to! I still think of it as new. I bought it in 2010 though. The job is induction. That was 1k and the oven was 4K. Very happy and the only thing I would change would be that I would have had double hob size in future. But I don’t have the space at the moment. I do have an extra integrated oven / microwave too. A range would be a dream though. I don’t have many treats or things for myself so I’m really happy to spend on my kitchen. I spend a lot of time in there!

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 06/02/2021 14:02

We're waiting for delivery of a new Rangemaster to replace our Stoves cooker that has been, frankly, nothing but a PITA she we bought it - bits falling off, finish depleting despite good care and correct treatment, the induction hob packed up completely and had to be replaced, then the oven stopped working. Then the induction hob packed up again, so we gave it up as a bad job.

Buy cheap, buy twice...

CuriousaboutSamphire · 06/02/2021 14:06

I'd do everything I could to get the Aga up and running. A refurb could be cost effective!

And I'm another with a Rangemaster that has changed our relationship with ovens.

But Stoves aren’t cheap, they’re the same price range as Rangemaster. It’s really disappointing to hear that.
FortunesFave · 06/02/2021 14:07

Fix the Aga! It's a bloody Aga!

PugInTheHouse · 06/02/2021 14:10

We have the same as Vinyldetective but with the induction hob. Seems pretty good so far. Definitely not that much cheaper the rangemaster, they look nicer also.

EchidnasPhone · 06/02/2021 14:10

I spent more on the range cooker than the units 😬 definitely an investment but it’s used every day and I don’t know what I’d do with anything smaller

ohidoliketobe · 06/02/2021 14:13

We have a rangemaster Classic Delux 110 in Black and brass. That and the full height corner pantry and the best things about the kitchen we had fitted 3 years ago. It's a kitchen diner so it's our main family room, we didn't want to cut corners. We had a cheap oven in our old house and the damage it caused to surrounding units when it needed continual repairs was a bloody nightmare.
The RM is the centrepiece of the room, it's absolutely stunning and it's a joy to use. I adore it and lovingly stroke the bar rail as I walk past it many a time Grin

Thehop · 06/02/2021 14:13

I got my rangemaster used on eBay for £400 paid for a professional clean and it was spotless

Rosieandtwinkle · 06/02/2021 14:24

We have recently bought a Rangemaster after years with a cheap oven that never heated at the right temperature. We absolutely love it and it was worth every penny. That said though, if I’d just bought a house with an Aga, I’d definitely be investing in that repaired!
