Getting snowed in

myoho · 06/02/2021 09:33

We are forecast heavy snow tomorrow. I live at the very end of a long windy road which is downhill. I park on my own driveway. In the past when we've had heavy snow I have been snowed in either because I can't get up the hill and/or because other vehicles are stranded up the road.

This is my first winter in a new job and my manager expects me to park my car away from my house on the main road so I can get to work. AIBU to worry that my car might get damaged by someone ploughing into it in bad weather and/or my insurance company would not pay up if they did as I clearly state that my car is parked on my drive overnight?

Would you do this?

@Bookwords..ermm cannot see where I said about volunteering !! Am not being sanctimonious but just suggesting that people who are critical about how care workers get to work could help!!

littlepattilou · 06/02/2021 21:19

Leaving it in a place where you can easily get off in it seems to be the best idea. That's what a few people in my village do.

@myoho If you're worried about this now, what are you going to do if there is a lot of snow every day for a month? Just not go in? Confused

Bookwords · 06/02/2021 21:29

@dottiedaisee erm during a pandemic? Mix card??

FFS, carers are just as capable of during in the snow as anyone.

Your post is totally ridiculous!!

No I won't volunteer to get them to work, like they won't volunteer to get me to work.

Your post was totally sanctimonious.

*driving in the snow

thelake · 06/02/2021 21:42

Extreme but could you stay overnight at the home?

PrtScn · 06/02/2021 21:46

@MotherExtraordinaire

Fwiw, some neighbours parked their cars on the road prior to the snow a few years back. 6 were written off in one go!

Can you really afford tgat risk? In terms of the cost re premiums, additional costs of new car on top and the hassle in terms of time without a car and replacing /dealing with insurance? It took 2 and a but years for my claim to finally close.

Yep, couple of years ago my sister parked her car on the road and it got written off when another car lost control and hit it, followed by the car behind that one to hitting them both! She had a right hassle sorting it out with the insurers as the second car’s insurance were not playing nice. I’d personally not risk it, but I’m lucky enough to be able to just take the day off on a whim as I’m not in a care role.
Allgirlskidsanddogs · 06/02/2021 21:56

I would not be parking where my car could be damaged. I would keep my car in it’s usual place. A taxi is a good idea. Or walk to the main road and get a lift from there. But I think if the road is impassible due to the snow that’s the point I stay home, but I don’t work in the same type of work as you.

dottiedaisee · 06/02/2021 21:58

@Bookwords...think you need a head wobble and a coffee...you have clearly misunderstood my post l

Bookwords · 06/02/2021 22:21

@dottiedaisee no head wobble needed! I'm
Not taking care workers to work, that's their responsibility! Easy!

Why the bell would I be responsible to take drivers that aren't able to drive in snow and ice to work?

Just why?

Maybe you need less gin?

dottiedaisee · 06/02/2021 22:33

@Bookwords ...am in bed reading a book .Of course it is the carers responsibility to get to work..but if they actually cannot get there it would be great for volunteers to help . ie like yourself..just a suggestion that has obviously touched a nerve! Anyway am off to sleep now..night night .

myoho · 06/02/2021 22:40

No alarm, no panic, no trying to scrounge a day off, perfectly willing to try all ways to get to work....I just wondered if I would be insured if some numpty careered into me. Jeez this place is like a parallel universe at times!

myoho · 06/02/2021 22:41

thelake I will take an overnight bag with me on Monday because yes I'm sure we would be able to sort something out even if it was mattresses on the office floor!

OP posts:
Bookwords · 06/02/2021 22:42

@dottiedaisee why would I be better placed to take a carer, doctor, nurse etc to work any better than they would themselves? How odd you think I would?

Not touched a nerve, live in south london and not a flake of snow has fallen, marvellous transport infrastructure and all good!

Sweet dreams and hopefully no dreams of snow ⛄️ ⛄️

FFS, we now have to carers to work! 😂

Not sure where anyone has got the idea I won't go in. Getting in or not wasn't even part of my post Confused

But now you come to mention it, yes I might just take a month off if it snows Grin

OP posts:
Frozenintime · 06/02/2021 22:47

There obviously won't be any public transport if it snows heavily. I hope your manager understands that ? You can't get there if roads are blocked by snow

myoho · 06/02/2021 22:51

@Casschops

Wouldn't parking your carcaway from the house mean that you can get to it easily. Is it that hard i park mine on the road in poor weather. Why the alarm.
Where is the alarm?

Lurkingforawhile · 06/02/2021 22:52

In our area we have 4x4 volunteer organisations in each county who help with getting nurses etc into work when it's snowy. Worth looking it up. They are top people and have very tough old landys!

myoho · 06/02/2021 22:57

Thank you Lurkingforawhile that's a good idea. I seem to remember there was a Facebook group set up where I live last time it was bad ,and lots of people were helping people that were stranded.

OP posts:
Haenow · 06/02/2021 23:02

I cannot believe the replies you are getting. Well, I can, this is MN. Wink
Not once did you imply you weren’t going, just concerned about the best option for your car in terms of safety etc.
I would suggest a taxi is probably best as you can walk to a main road and meet them there.

myoho · 06/02/2021 23:07

Thank you Haenow I did have to check my post to see if I'd inadvertently mentioned trying to skive a day off!

It was all a bit academic anyway as I've just returned home from work and there wasn't a safe place to be had on one of the more main roads.

Who knew asking a simple question could start a bun fight? I swear some people on here could start an argument in an empty room.

Op our manager was out at 2am in the morning trying to shovel snow. Had loads of staff ringing saying they couldn't get in. 1 of my friends had a 4x4 picking them up. 3 nights stuck at work never want to do that again lol

myoho · 07/02/2021 08:25

vodkaredbullgirl being marooned at work wouldn't be my idea of fun either!
It's snowing hard here but the ground is so wet it isn't sticking at the moment.

OP posts:
PrivateHall · 07/02/2021 09:06

Well at least after all that you can get to work op! Take care on those roads!

2typesofjungle · 07/02/2021 11:40

@MotherExtraordinaire
Do you know how your supposed to use snow socks?

Yes I do, i use them regularly where I live. Do you know how to use snow socks? From your description I think you don't.
