Are ice cubes expensive? Or difficult to make?

No and no. So why do I feel extravagant when I use a lot of ice for my G&T? 🤔

Your thoughts, please.

Or do you have anything that feels extravagant but really isn't?

@noblegiraffe I'd need another fridge to house all the different gins I have

Of course - after the bath, otherwise the water would be too hot to put in the freezer and we wouldn't have such a deep bath.

But you may have a point as I've noticed that the cat won't drink the bath water but will drink out of the toilet. Do you think we should consider changing our money-saving idea?
Depends, do you think you'd scoop it from the bowl or from the cistern?

What I want to know is: who is buying those bags of ice cubes from supermarkets? I can sort of see why you might buy a few bags (about a quid each) if you realise you forgot to make any and your party guests are arriving in 10 minutes; but I rather fear there are plenty of folk who buy them not in a state of panic and keep them in all the time. Why, when they're so easy to make? In fact, if you're handy with a chisel, you don't even have to make the minimal effort to make them yourself - your freezer will do it for you Grin
That'd be me! I get one 2kg bag each week with my weekly shop. And yup, my family enjoys every last cube. I'd never be able to keep up with the demand if I had to make it on my own.
Lemonyfuckit · 06/02/2021 10:06

Weirdly OP I'm the opposite - I don't like too much ice (although would be happy with one huge ice cube - must get some sort of posh big ice cube tray as I get the science about it melting slower) - I'm with @Wingedharpy in that I like my gin ginny.

Also keep my vodka in the freezer as my favourite tipple is a very dirty martini. When the vodka is frozen don't need to dilute my drink with any ice and the vodka goes all thick. Mmmmm.

DaisyDreaming · 06/02/2021 10:09

I buy ice.£1 a big bag that’s lasts ages, I love it, our ice was always cloudy and left bits floating in your drink. Every time I use it I enjoy it. Yet I feel guilty!

PensionsYes · 06/02/2021 10:15

@TwoLeftSocksWithHoles - hilarious!

grey12 · 06/02/2021 10:17

There's plenty of options of nonmelting ice cubes. I gave some to my dad called ice rocks, I think

AngelicInnocent · 06/02/2021 10:20

I have a counter top ice machine. If I'm home, it's on. It doesn't take long to start producing them.

FleetwoodRaincoat · 06/02/2021 10:22

I fill up one ice cube tray and when the ice is done, put it into a takeaway container, then refill the tray and repeat. That way, I usually have a few takeaway containers full of ice so no need to buy any. Ever. And I can have loads in my drinks [swanky show-off emoji]

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 06/02/2021 10:22

I like a couple of big cubes in my G&T.

I really hate the practice of giving you half a glass of crushed ice, with just half a glass of whatever drink you ordered. It’s just stingy cost-saving IMO - and especially in hot weather, if you don’t drink up very quickly you end up with a nasty watery version of whatever you wanted.

Maybe that’s the idea - you have to drink up quickly and order another - win-win for the establishment.

Orcadianrythyms · 06/02/2021 10:31

WTAF @TwoLeftSocksWithHoles. You drink used bathwater!!!!

Cam2020 · 06/02/2021 10:38

Is it because of the space/time it takes? I love ice but irrationally hate making it. No idea why, it takes 2 mins to prepare!

I'd love an American style fridge too but my little kitchen only accommodates an annoying slimline one.

AuntieDolly · 06/02/2021 10:42

My friend makes huge ice balls using kids water balloons. They take forever to melt and last all night.

StCharlotte · 06/02/2021 10:53

@Chicchicchicchiclana

I really cannot drink a cold drink without ice in it. I quite often put ice in a glass of wine.
A friend of mine always serves wine with ice. This is because the fridge is too full of her DH's beer so there's no room for her wine to chill. I keep telling her to LTB.
Batshitkerazy · 06/02/2021 10:56

I actually know what you mean! I think it’s because they come out crap when I make them myself, I like the big chunky ones you can buy. But it seems so silly and wasteful to keep buying it Grin

Campions · 06/02/2021 10:58
@pigsDOfly I use those enormous ice cubes for G&T where you just put one 2" cube in the glass - but when I went to refill I added another and it felt weirdly extravagant 😆
I'm with you on the giant ice cubes, they melt much more slowly. Less surface area I suppose.

LookToTreblesGoingTreblesGone · 06/02/2021 11:01

I had to use 2 whole trays of ice cubes to take to hospital yesterday. The hospital "doesn't have ice" yet DH's blood test needs to be put on ice immediately.
Oh the extravagance Wink

StormyInTheNorth · 06/02/2021 11:08

I can't stand the stuff. I won't touch it. To the point, I won't drink an any drink with it in. It goes back for a no ice version. I get brain freeze and numb fingers. Appreciate I may be slightly odd.
DH has ice in every cold drink and we don't have an ice maker so we buy bags of ice for the chest freezer and decant to the kitchen. I got so sick of my frost free freezer having lumps of ice all over food packets with DH spilling filled ice trays everywhere.

purrswhileheeats · 06/02/2021 11:09

@Marinaloves

Ice It’s so AMERICAN and common Wink
Are you my mother? Shock

My DM (who never let me watch ITV or Dallas/Dynasty) once opened my freezer and exclaimed in horror 'Oh Purrs, you do have a LOT of ice! I live in fucking Cyprus Confused

That’s me. The ice making component in my freezer broke so I had to do with bags until I could defrost it. Sorry. 😬

I swallowed a whole Ice Cube on Thursday, it's still not emerged. How long do you thinks I should leave it before calling the Doctors?

Threadgood · 06/02/2021 12:14

@rslsys

Oh god, that's awful. You must really be in a panic. I think that if it hasn't made its way out within about 70 years, you really need to seek medical advice. You can't just leave it indefinitely.

rslsys · 06/02/2021 12:27

In 70 years I will be 135 - so I think the medics will be beating a path to my door, must remember to ask them Grin

Reminds of some invaluable advice I read on the subject:

"If choking on an ice cube, drink some boiling water for instant relief."

It was in Viz obviously.

pigsDOfly · 06/02/2021 14:38

Seems it's only me that doesn't like ice in a G & T, or any other drinks come to that.

I was a child in the days before most homes had a fridge or freezer maybe that accounts for my dislike of ice. Soft drinks would have been drunk at room temperature or tap temperature if they were diluted with water.
