Are ice cubes expensive? Or difficult to make?

No and no. So why do I feel extravagant when I use a lot of ice for my G&T? 🤔

Your thoughts, please.

Or do you have anything that feels extravagant but really isn't?

The main reason we built a kitchen extension was so we could get an American style FF with ice on tap. And it was worth it!

Mamanyt · 06/02/2021 07:34

@mathanxiety

...who is buying those bags of ice cubes from supermarkets?

Stick bottles and cans of beer in a big cooler, dump a few bags of ice on top of them and all around -> BBQ.

If you add a good bit of salt to the ice (that's supposing no one is dumping the cubes in drinks), the beer will get MUCH colder, BTW.

Please tell me the bathwater ice cube post was a wind up!

I buy bags of ice all the time, for using in the esky, but also keep a bag in the freezer. I have three freezers though, so plenty of room.

RantyAnty · 06/02/2021 07:51

When I'm in the US, let the ice cubes roll or plonk!

Always loved staying in the hotels with the ice machine on every floor and once I get in my room, I'd take both ice buckets and fill them up for my drinks.

At breakfast, they'd give you glasses of water with lots of ice and I'd spoon a couple of cubes right in my coffee or tea. Shock

So posh Grin

whatkatydid2013 · 06/02/2021 07:51

I buy bags of frozen cherries and strawberries from the supermarket and use them in place of ice cubes for G&Ts. Started after a posh hotel on a work trip did them with strawberries on Valentine’s Day and how amazing the strawberries tasted at the end when they’d half melted and soaked up some of the drink

Gretafamily · 06/02/2021 07:52

@WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll when I was pregnant a couple of years ago I had excruciating wisdom tooth pain and if I hadn’t been pregnant would happily have been popping every pain killer available. I bought a bag of ice and more or less always chewed on an ice cube to numb pain. So my reason was total laziness as I could of course done a tray regularly!

Higgeldypiggeldy35 · 06/02/2021 08:10

Or you could use the plastic cubes that go in the freezer and don't dilute your drink?!

OrangeSamphire · 06/02/2021 08:22

I buy bags of ice because:

  • plastic cubes taste of plastic
  • ice from cube trays tastes of freezer and plastic, and the concentrated taste of whatever your mains water is like, which taints a drink
  • we use a lot of ice
  • we have no room for a giant American fridge with integrated ice maker
  • it saves a lot of time
  • I can put things on top of the ice in the freezer without worrying about slop/spillage
  • it’s always available, we don’t have to wait for it to freeze
  • it’s a pound a bag which lasts a week.
CoronaIsWatching · 06/02/2021 08:27

I need ice in all my drinks, I buy the large slow melters, only need one icecube per drink and takes up less room in the freezer

SpiderinaWingMirror · 06/02/2021 08:29

According to older members in the family (particularly BIL) I am recklessly extravagant with tea bags.
One for each cup of tea.
They are 5p each so just maybe if I listened I would be a millionaire by now

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 06/02/2021 08:34

I have an ice maker in my FF which exists for the sole purpose of providing ice for my G&T. I think it's worth every penny!!

Thanks, I have added the super size cubes to my shop. Didn't know they existed!
2Rebecca · 06/02/2021 08:54

Lots of ice means less room for drink. My husband hates ice in drinks. I use 2-3 cubes but in New York I got fed up of hardly any drink in my ice filled glass so asked for no ice and got told it would be double the price!

GlittercheeksOakleaf · 06/02/2021 08:55

We have an ice machine. Up to 11kg ice per day. We have it in every drink (don't do hot drinks) and were going through a bag a day so its already paid for itself. No more bags of ice taking up precious room in the freezer.

RosesAndHellebores · 06/02/2021 09:00

I have a pull out tray in my freezer and inch deep just for ice cube trays!

SparkysMagicPiano · 06/02/2021 09:15

@Belledan1

I buy the bags that look like freezer bags and you just fill up with water and put in the freezer. Easy to store.
These are great.

Once frozen you just pull the sides to release the cubes and voila, a bag of ice cubes.

enuffalreadyffs · 06/02/2021 09:21

@Tuscadero

When we were kids in the 80s we only ever had ice on Christmas day. As a treat. My mother couldn't stand an ice cube tray taking up space when it could be accommodating some lamb chops instead. Grin

I think this must be it! Growing up with a tiny icebox compartment of an under-counter fridge, who has room for ice?!

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 06/02/2021 09:22

@TwoLeftSocksWithHoles

We're on a water meter and so to keep costs down I often fill the ice cube tray after I've had a bath.

They can be a bit cloudy and have a slight lavendery taste but we think that adds a bit of colour to our empty, shallow lives.
(literally sometimes, as once after a 'Shoot for the Stars' bath bomb they turned out all blue and sparkly!)

Eh?! Confused

The bath water you’ve used to clean yourself with?!?

noblegiraffe · 06/02/2021 09:23

I don’t drink gin so there’s probably an obvious answer, but if you want cold gin and are going to the effort of fake ice cubes because you also don’t want diluted gin, why don’t you just put your gin in the fridge?

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 06/02/2021 09:24

Whilst pregnant, I crunched ice. My DM told me to go easy after filling a large glass with ice. My Hmm face reminded her that homemade ice is nearly free and just water. Grin

I’m not a G&T drinker but do love a bit of ice!

Marinaloves · 06/02/2021 09:25

@RantyAnty
Omg I love the ice machines in American hotels.
Though not in expensive ones I found out! I asked why not, and they said, you can call room service. Well i could, but actually I enjoy the ice machine!!!

Littlepaws18 · 06/02/2021 09:30

At Morrison's and Tesco's you can buy these really big cubes and you only need one in a drink it last ages and the are £1 a bag. Perfik for a gin

Marinaloves · 06/02/2021 09:31

@Littlepaws18
I don’t have a Tesco or a Morrison’s near me. I’ve got ICE envy now

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 06/02/2021 09:44

@BeingATwatItsABingThing

Of course - after the bath, otherwise the water would be too hot to put in the freezer and we wouldn't have such a deep bath.

But you may have a point as I've noticed that the cat won't drink the bath water but will drink out of the toilet. Do you think we should consider changing our money-saving idea?
