Now, i'm very respectful to Captain Tom. A wonderful man, very sad news this week about his death. AIBU though to suggest this is a crass thing to do and not a worthwhile tribute?

All while i've read numerous accounts on here and elsewhere (including my own local facebook page) of people being harangued for not going out to clap the other night. It all seems to have gone too far. The poor man wouldn't have wanted this.

OP posts:

People are weird but I guess it's harmless.
I admire his determination and the amount of money he raised, but I don't understand all the fuss over Captain Tom and why people who never even met him are grief stricken (supposedly).
Naturally his family will miss him, but he had a long life and dying at 100 is not "tragic".

CroutonsAvatar · 06/02/2021 17:39

Haha! Oh my good god. What a bizarre thing to do. Peak 2020’s. 😂

Sh05 · 06/02/2021 17:40

I just wish she'd not made him look so scruffy, that was my first thought when I saw it.

WorraLiberty · 06/02/2021 17:44

It's very clever but given his death, it's also very crass.

She doesn't deserve the attention both you and the Daily Mail have given her, OP.

FelicityBeedle · 06/02/2021 17:48

If she was a talented painter would you be calling this a crass tribute? She’s an artist who uses her face as a canvas. I can’t see the issue

Tuscadero · 06/02/2021 17:50

and her chest. don't forget the bare boobs.

73kittycat73 · 06/02/2021 18:03

I think it shows amazing skill and ingenuity. I don't see what's wrong with it myself?

byebyeboyee · 06/02/2021 21:16

@OwlBeThere okay thank you, I feel that it's the daily mails fault really they put the spot light on her. It's definitely a misguided thing to do but no one thought to tell her? The skirts worse!

byebyeboyee · 06/02/2021 21:17

I do think she's very talented though

byebyeboyee · 06/02/2021 21:20

@LegendDairy I didn't think of that! How horrible.

ilikebooksandplants · 06/02/2021 21:23

That whole thing is remarkable. In both a ‘fuck me what the hell has happened to the country we have gone collectively mad’ and ‘that’s extremely impressive make up skills’.

grassisjeweled · 06/02/2021 21:23

She used more than 60 brushes to complete the look and wore a cling film wig

grassisjeweled · 06/02/2021 21:24

Bare boobs? His lapels? What?

byebyeboyee · 06/02/2021 21:27

@grassisjeweled apparently she's wearing like a boob tube top thing under her armpits

byebyeboyee · 06/02/2021 21:28

Although after having a look I can't see it!

lioncitygirl · 06/02/2021 21:29

That is some talent! Wow. Attention seeking tho.

ConeHat · 06/02/2021 21:39

My first thought was attention seeking

She is very talented. The article says she has ASD? My son is autistic, I could tell you 50 things off the top of my my head that no one would understand. As a plaid maybe she doesnt see why isnt to everyone's taste or we redefining the triade of impairments now?

ThatDamnKrampus · 06/02/2021 22:01

@ArosAdraDrosDolig

I don’t think anyone should be horrible here. The lady has autism, and has used her talent to try to honour Captain Tom in the way she sees fit. And how is it actually different from a talented artist painting a portrait of him?

I know a person with autism who has a similar talent for make up. I don’t think we should run it down as a skill or look down our noses. Or cast aspersions on this lady’s motives.

Let’s not be unkind here. It’s a bit of a bandwagon. But I think her intentions are likely to be genuine, and none of us want to shit on someone who’s trying to do a nice thing or be arseholes, do we?

Another agreeing with this.

She hasn't meant to be insensitive I'm sure but the DM have picked this up and run with it; it is the journo/rag that ought to be judged here.

dementedma · 06/02/2021 22:41

That must really be freaking his family out!

ArosAdraDrosDolig · 07/02/2021 09:41

The article says she has autism tweacle

Of course it could be incorrect.

jackieweaverhasauthorityhere · 07/02/2021 10:03

She's very talented and doesn't deserve a pile on if she is autistic. However, I don't feel this is in good taste, not so soon after someone has died. If it was my family member, I would probably feel quite upset at the thought of a stranger making themselves up to look like them and displaying it online to showcase their skills. I don't think there is anything wrong with saying that, as long as it isn't personal and abusive to the young woman. I don't think it would be the timing to unveil an oil portrait either so it's not about the medium.

I know Captain Tom captured the national imagination but I think some of us are forgetting he was a decent and accomplished person who deserves a bit of respect and decorum, not some cypher on which to project our own emotions.

Tweacle · 07/02/2021 11:49

I may well be wrong. I do know she is incredibly talented though. It's made me feel a tad uncomfortable with her doing it so soon after his death. But again she is very talented.
