Now, i'm very respectful to Captain Tom. A wonderful man, very sad news this week about his death. AIBU though to suggest this is a crass thing to do and not a worthwhile tribute?

All while i've read numerous accounts on here and elsewhere (including my own local facebook page) of people being harangued for not going out to clap the other night. It all seems to have gone too far. The poor man wouldn't have wanted this.

@Moondust001 good point. The Daily Mail probably knew it would get a reaction.

Every time someone famous and popular dies some people go into an absolute override of grief and attention seeking.
There will be many people publicly wailing on the day of the funeral.

@MissBaskinIfYoureNasty

So are people saying you can do what you like if you're autistic? Bit offensive for set the bar so low for people with autism imo.
Autism is a spectrum disorder.

What people are saying is that people with autism don't always realise what NT people will find offensive.

BrownFootStool · 05/02/2021 19:42

He's an icon now. This is one thing that people do with icons.

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 05/02/2021 19:42

So, anyone with autism should be applauded for making themselves up to look like someone else.?

WTF does this even mean?

user1467048527 · 05/02/2021 19:49

Totally agree @Moondust001

I’ve no idea whether her autism is a factor here, but if it was there is certainly no excuse for the dm. Also don’t see anyone needs to pretend it’s nice if it isn’t - she’s an adult, not a small child, so presumably could take someone tactfully saying that although done with good intentions (and undoubtedly very skilful) many people wouldn’t find this respectful.

babbaloushka · 05/02/2021 19:55

A nice tribute is lighting a candle or playing his favourite song, not painting yourself into a likeness and posting it online. That's attention seeking. His poor family.

InFiveMins · 05/02/2021 19:59

I'm totally fed up of the hero worshipping shit, in any form.

Let the poor man rest in peace for goodness sake without useless clapping or this makeup monstrosity.

wellthatsunusual · 05/02/2021 19:59

@Icecreamsoda99

People who are saying it's okay, if your dad or grandad had just died would you like people making themselves up to look like him?
I don't really see it as making yourself up to look like someone. To me it's just a portrait but instead of being done on paper or canvas, it's done on a person. It wouldn't bother me if someone did a portrait of my loved one. I'd think it was strange mind you. But it wouldn't offend me.
DimidDavilby · 05/02/2021 20:00

Fucking hilarious.

That vicar was so right.

@ArosAdraDrosDolig

I don’t think anyone should be horrible here. The lady has autism, and has used her talent to try to honour Captain Tom in the way she sees fit. And how is it actually different from a talented artist painting a portrait of him?

I know a person with autism who has a similar talent for make up. I don’t think we should run it down as a skill or look down our noses. Or cast aspersions on this lady’s motives.

Let’s not be unkind here. It’s a bit of a bandwagon. But I think her intentions are likely to be genuine, and none of us want to shit on someone who’s trying to do a nice thing or be arseholes, do we?

OwlBeThere · 05/02/2021 20:03

I think it’s a better tribute than the arse kissing, Sycophantic, fake sad things ive read.
She is a talented make up artist, this is a thing she does regularly and so she did him. I don’t see what is bad taste about it tbh.

OhioOhioOhio · 05/02/2021 20:07

Ffs. What next?

OwlBeThere · 05/02/2021 20:07

@byebyeboyee she’s not topless! She’s wearing a strapless top so she can paint her chest and arms.

Tal45 · 05/02/2021 20:08

Not to everyone's taste I'm sure but I think she sounded pretty sweet in the write up and is obviously very talented. She's also got autism to deal with and an autistic child so if it gets her some more business then good for her. She doesn't sound like some desperate attention seeking instagrammer.

frumpety · 05/02/2021 20:33

If that is her personal tribute to the man then fair enough, it must have taken ages. If she is hoping to profit from it then it feels less fair enough iyswim ?

LegendDairy · 05/02/2021 20:50

@byebyeboyee that mini skirt is likely to have been created by a dropship auto algorithm. Bots will read the Internet for trending topics and create stuff on mass. The same happened when George Floyd was trending on the socials.

No. Not saying you can do anything you like if you’re autistic. I have that diagnosis too.

Simply saying that it isn’t surprising if her perception is different from the majority, that she hasn’t done anything wrong, and that it costs nothing to be kind.

I also know that my friend with asd focuses very exclusively on her make up, can spend 12 hours or so doing a full piece like that (no, she hasn’t done dead celebrities) and would be heartbroken if anyone felt it was a disrespectful thing to do.

Nobody is really answering as to why it’s different from a portrait painted by a talented artist? Why is one respectful and the other tacky? Is it just snobbery?

OwlBeThere · 06/02/2021 16:58

@ArosAdraDrosDolig dwi’n cytuno, both with your point and your user name! It’s a tribute in the way she knows how, it’s no different than a portrait.

ToadsThePeanutButterSnob · 06/02/2021 17:22

No but it does mean we struggle sometimes about what is considered socially accetable.

I know I have pissed people off and offended people without meaning to so many times.

RaspberryCoulis · 06/02/2021 17:24

People are fucking weird.

Tuscadero · 06/02/2021 17:26

Painting an old man's image on your tits. I'm so moved, babes.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 06/02/2021 17:28

Well, that'll be a shock for the gas man when he calls ... Grin

Tweacle · 06/02/2021 17:29

I don't think she has autism ? Her child does. She's very talented. She's actually local to me. I agree it's self promotion, but it's her job. I don't think she expected it to go so far and wide. She's actually a lovely girl to be fair.
