To be sick of nepotism in government?

Youreatragedystartingtohappen · 04/02/2021 16:30

Normally I try to let politics pass me by and not to sweat the small stuff. But this? It's annoyed me, I didn't get anywhere near this and it affected when I had to go back to work after my DS. Just get a bit fed up with it at times I guess,

I disagree. It sends the right message and is in keeping with, for example, NHS and civil service policy.

Martinisarebetterdirty · 04/02/2021 16:37

I’m not sure how this is nepotism? It’s giving a maternity package to the people we elect that is on a par with most senior roles in business. I had six months full pay so it isn’t unheard of. This is enabling women to chose to be an MP rather than an auditor, lawyer etc. I’m not sure how this isn’t a good thing, I think six months full pay should be standard for firms and I wouldn’t want to work for a firm that gave less as it shows that they don’t value women (even though my child bearing days are sadly behind me now). I’m sorry you weren’t able to take more time to be at home if you wanted to, but that shouldn’t mean that we don’t celebrate when other women get treated properly.

PlanDeRaccordement · 04/02/2021 16:37

That’s not nepotism. That’s called the government setting a new, better standard for businesses to follow.
It’s the same with diversity and other good markers of social progress.

PlanDeRaccordement · 04/02/2021 16:39

That’s I how feel too. I could only take 12weeks off for each child due to financial reasons but I’d never be “what I got is what future generations should get because they’re no better than me”

I do think it's good news, it's what we should be working towards.

I'd like to hope they eventually extend it to cover those of us in local govt who currently only get 6 weeks at 90% and then half pay.

luxxlisbon · 04/02/2021 16:41

What...do you know what nepotism is?
This isn't it.

I don't really understand the race to the bottom either, every workplace is free to set their own maternity policy. So just because you didn't get enhanced pay you disagree with anyone else getting it?

The only negative of this is that they didn't make paternity more generous along side maternity.

Shamoo · 04/02/2021 16:42

My first thought when I saw this story was that it was a disgrace that it has taken until now to provide this standard. It’s not nepotism, it’s just being a good employer. Until now she would have lost her position due to being pregnant. Would you rather that OP?

Zarinea · 04/02/2021 16:42

Agree with PPs.

It's a good - though obviously overdue - thing that senior women aren't seriously penalised for having children.

I'm also confused about what part of this is nepotism though.

LillyFlower1984 · 04/02/2021 16:43

Definition of nepotism...

“the practice among those with power or influence of favouring relatives or friends, especially by giving them jobs.”

What you posted doesn’t fit.

murasaki · 04/02/2021 17:00

it should be all mps really, not just ministers.

But I don't think you know what nepotism means.

Crankley · 04/02/2021 17:37

Well, that went well OP. Envy is a very unattractive trait.

overwork · 04/02/2021 17:38

Not strictly relevant, but to the poster who suggested that the NHS maternity policy is 6 months full pay, it's sadly just 8 weeks of full pay, and then 18 weeks of half pay. 6 months would be lovely!

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 04/02/2021 17:41

I think you’ve misunderstood the meaning of nepotism.

Chloemol · 04/02/2021 17:49

Did you read the article or just the headlines? If you read the article you would see that she, along with others dont get maternity leave, something all other workers get, and would be expected to quit her job! Why exactly is bringing her role and others within the Government in line with legislation for every other woman allowed mat leave nepotism?

MaliceOrgan · 04/02/2021 18:01

How on earth is that nepotism?

parietal · 04/02/2021 18:16

There is lots of nepotism in government (e.g. Dido Harding) but this is not nepotism.

The only thing to complain about is that the aren't giving all MPs better maternity leave.

VinylDetective · 04/02/2021 18:19

It’s really good news. We fought bloody hard for maternity rights for all women. Why would a cabinet minister be any different?

HopeClearwater · 04/02/2021 18:22

OP. Nepotism is the practice of favouring your friends and relatives over others - when your cousin gives you a job in her company without interviewing other candidates. It’s from the Latin for nephew, I think.

GintyMcGinty · 04/02/2021 18:29

Any women getting good maternity rights is a good thing.

Muckduck · 04/02/2021 18:31

I'm surprised this wasn't the case, as has been said, 6 months full pay is standard in many gov departments anyway. Also might want to find a dictionary and take up issues with your employer. We should be aiming to lift everyone up, rather than drag down.

Meme69 · 04/02/2021 18:33

All MP's get paid maternity leave in line with legislation that covers everyone who has a job, this is about allowing someone to back fill their post whilst they are off.

BonnieDundee · 04/02/2021 18:35

I'm one of this useless (in my opinion) government's worst critics but this is the right decision. Nobody should be made to resign from a job for having a baby (barring health and safety reasons). Agree with Starmer that it's long overdue

PTH20 · 04/02/2021 18:36

Do you understand what nepotism is?

JayAlfredPrufrock · 04/02/2021 18:37

Learn the meaning of words before using them in public.

DdraigGoch · 04/02/2021 18:55

Go on OP, what did you think that "nepotism" meant?
