Found it, huzzah

Not to take job as it's 1 hour commute ? http://www.mumsnet.com/Talk/amiibeingunreasonable/4135222-not-to-take-job-as-it-s-1-hour-commute

bbwingg · 04/02/2021 15:51

@NoGoodPunsLeft oh Thankyou Smile

Fingers crossed for this wfh one, sounds much better.
I wouldn’t take amin wage job for that much of a commute and so many transport changes - leave to much open for missed connections last train cancelled etc. Massive ball ache.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 04/02/2021 16:05

I wouldn't take a minumum wage job with a commute like that. I am on minumum wage myself but my job is a 10 minute walk from my house!

Alicetheowl · 04/02/2021 16:07

Why on earth does a call centre not allow people to work from home? They have had nearly a year to sort out their systems and software to do this. How can they justify putting people on public transport for this?

QuantumQuality · 04/02/2021 16:07

Why are you posting this again? It’s not two proper trains, it’s metros where you don’t even have to change platform. And that £160 travel isn’t for trains and buses, you’re including Uber costs for some of it.

And also you’re recovering from serious mental health issues.

QuantumQuality · 04/02/2021 16:08

@Alicetheowl It’s only in the office for six months while she does training.

strawberriesontheNeva · 04/02/2021 16:10

That's a long commute for a small salary and basically to be verbally abused all day on the phones by customers. I wouldn't take it.

bbwingg · 04/02/2021 16:11

This one is a different company than the last job I posted
This is permanent in the office

Oh I see, so is this the job you were offered more than 3 weeks ago and you're looking for validation to turn it down? Take the job and keep looking for something more convenient. Or, decide that you want to stay unemployed until you find something more convenient.

The minimum wage and the welfare system are obviously out of step and don't work well together if the monetary difference is so small that people can afford to be picky about a 1 hour commute.

hobbyiscodefordogging · 04/02/2021 16:15

Oh it's a different one? How come you turned down the other one, if it was 6 months in the office then wfh?

Seventytwo · 04/02/2021 16:15

Sorry OP, but fuck that for a MW job! I’d hold out for the others. Two trains to get home after 11pm, plus public transport and office work in the midst of a global pandemic? Neither of those are very safe. I’d keep applying closer to home.

bbwingg · 04/02/2021 16:18

@hobbyiscodefordogging the same reasons.
Relying on public transport and travelling around alone in a area I'm not familiar with after 11pm
I didn't feel totally safe
I thought this job had a much earlier finish when I applied ..till the telephone interview when he said much later finish

OP posts:
WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 04/02/2021 16:18

No way would I take that in those circumstances.

I'd only take it if it was a matter of kids eating or not.

Goid luck got the interview in a few weeks

RandomMess · 04/02/2021 16:23

I wouldn't be happy having to rely on the last train home nor travelling that late at night. 4 hours commuting a day for min wage I could probably spend the time better reducing my outgoings and applying for other jobs.

shockedandsadd · 04/02/2021 16:24

Having read this and your last post, it feels like you are constantly looking for excuses not to work!

Waxonwaxoff0 · 04/02/2021 16:25

Yes, that's why the minumum wage needs increasing. It's not enough to live on.
hobbyiscodefordogging · 04/02/2021 16:27

@Waxonwaxoff0 that's what I meant, just inelegantly put! There shouldn't be a debate as to whether it's worth working or better to stay on the dole - it should always be worth working

hobbyiscodefordogging · 04/02/2021 16:31

OP, if the 11pm thing is the real reason then say it and ask them if it's possible to stick to day shifts as that was what you thought was being recruited.

When you make a big list of problems with taking the job, it does come off a bit as looking for excuses not to take it. Only you know if you really want it, but if you don't then think about your plans for getting into employment... not just for the money, it's usually good for self esteem, independence and all sorts to be in employment rather than relying on the system.

Hope you find what you're looking for Smile

bbwingg · 04/02/2021 17:13

I'm just trying to work out what's going to be best for me.
Not stressful and overall worth it.
I want to find something that's worth it(if that makes sense)

OP posts:
oohmama · 04/02/2021 17:18

I wouldn't

buttheywereonlysatellites · 04/02/2021 17:42

How much do you need the £180?
Personally, no I wouldn't for minimum wage unless I really needed to. I hate commuting, but have been lucky enough to have always had a commute that's under an hour and max two tube trains or a train and a good walk. Your commute is my idea of hell.

UselessYoke · 04/02/2021 17:47

I wouldn’t take a job with an 11pm finish, one hour commute, expensive train fare and minimum wage unless I was desperate.

Are you desperate?

bbwingg · 04/02/2021 18:29

I had a interview the other day for another position and they've just rang and I got the job.
So pleased it's for more money and only 25 commute
Start 22nd feb
So pleased
