Min wage
40 hours per week
Over 2 hours travelling (there and back )
In office working during pandemic (call centre ) no option to work from home
What would you do ?

bbwingg · 04/02/2021 13:29

@dancemom yes but doesn't include food
So would have to budget meals in

bbwingg · 04/02/2021 13:29

@Completelyunassertive he didn't mention any bonus but I guess it could be

Then I'd take it and bring packed lunch and dinners so no extra costs

And extra £180 a month isn't to be turned down and you can keep looking for something closer to home

hobbyiscodefordogging · 04/02/2021 13:45

Do you mean it's 2 hours each way? That's an awful lot of commuting, especially for a minimum wage job. I wouldn't normally entertain that much commuting, but if the alternative was unemployment then I might do. But I'd keep looking for something more local.

hobbyiscodefordogging · 04/02/2021 13:47

Sorry I've just seen it's 2 hours total, I misread train 1 being 20 mins and read it as 1h 20m.

Yes I would do that, but keep looking for something more local.

peak2021 · 04/02/2021 13:49

Take the job and continue looking for something more local. Then if you are successful your acceptance of a more local job is a perfectly good reason to move after a short time.

Lemondrops41 · 04/02/2021 13:54

I wouldn't do all that travelling on public transport for any job.

Would you be getting the last train home? What happens if you miss a train or a train gets cancelled or trains can't run because of a signalling problem or bad weather. How do you get home then? Can you travel to and from the station safely for your early and late shift? What's the train service like, would you get in trouble if you were regularly late due to trains never running on time?

5128gap · 04/02/2021 13:55

I would because I can't stand not having a job. It's very bad for my MH, so I would at least give it a go or use it as a stop gap while looking for something else.
That said, I have always had a commute of at least an hour, and am not particularly personally risk adverse when it comes to covid, so it wouldn't bother me to travel and be in an office, but I can see why it might be off putting.

CaffineismyBFF · 04/02/2021 13:55

Personally, no. I drive and I still wouldn't go that far, most I'd travel is 45 mins and always have. Plus I don't think I'd feel comfortable working in an office at the moment.

But that is me, depends on what your circumstances are.

bbwingg · 04/02/2021 14:14

I've just been sent a email and I have a job interview via zoom for 22nd feb
Working from home and it's £12 a hour which is obviously a lot better
I would prefer this

OP posts:
bbwingg · 04/02/2021 14:19

@Lemondrops41 it would be the last train yes.
If I missed this I would have to get a taxi which would be over £30

Hoppinggreen · 04/02/2021 14:21

Have you posted about this before?
If not, apologies
If so then you were advised to take the job by the majority of posters

pumpkinbump · 04/02/2021 14:23

Personally, no.

GeordieGreigsButtButtZoom · 04/02/2021 14:24

No, unless I really had no other option.

bbwingg · 04/02/2021 14:41

It's starting Monday too.
I just feel like it's been sprung on me.

OP posts:
icelollycraving · 04/02/2021 14:53

Sounds like you really don’t want to accept it. Do you need to accept it?

bbwingg · 04/02/2021 14:59

@icelollycraving I don't need to no.
It's just one of those situations I'm trying to work out what to do for the best.

OP posts:
BaggoMcoys · 04/02/2021 15:01

I'm unclear on the commute time. If it's 1 hour each way, that sounds normal to me and has been my average commute length. Two hours however, is too much imo - though I'd take it if desperate.

Fingers crossed you get the WFH job though!

NoGoodPunsLeft · 04/02/2021 15:02

@bbwingg haven't you already started a thread about this? You got a lot of replies on that one, what's changed?

bbwingg · 04/02/2021 15:03

@NoGoodPunsLeft I have forgot my login details so I've had to open a new account ..hence new question

I think you have to weigh up your quality of life doing this job vs quality of life not doing it. Only you can answer that.

BeyondMyWits · 04/02/2021 15:12

My daughter was in the exact same situation - for a call centre job, 2 buses in her case. She just went for it, did her very best and got loads of plaudits for her work, a great reference, got something to put on her CV, then left after 4 months to a better job.

She never saw it as a forever job, just a stepping stone into the workplace.

bbwingg · 04/02/2021 15:20

I don't mind the travelling if it wasn't for the 11 pm finish ..it would mean catching last trains and not being home till 12.30 am
I'm not sure how comfortable I feel on public transport at midnight

OP posts:
NoGoodPunsLeft · 04/02/2021 15:25

I see!

I'll have it saved on 'threads im on' if you can tell me what it might have been called it when you started it Grin

bbwingg · 04/02/2021 15:26

Hmmm possibly "aibu to turn down job offer" or shall I take this job ?
(Sorry I'm terrible at remembering details )
