Who feels anxious and low about Spring coming?

Since a child, I have always had a dread in my stomach when the nights get lighter, like a creeping feeling of more hours to fill, worry that I'll not have enough to do, or the people to do it with. A sense of ennui that ANOTHER year has passed. It's really strange and no one IRL that I know has it. My life is full of people excited and happy about Spring. I do get that this year particularly we need hope and happiness. I was just curious if anyone else had this Spring dread?

I feel like this too. I suspect it's due to being quite introverted and the expectation that, once spring comes, we should be out and about a lot. I love the coziness of autumn/winter hunkering down like the OP. In spring/summer, lots of people are out in their gardens, you can hear all their conversations and they can hear yours, with windows open too there's just no privacy! I'm basically just antisocial!

@cobblers123

I have to admit the thought of spring is one thing that's kept me going since December. I also love noticing the slightly lighter evenings too.

Spring can't come fast enough for me.

Same here.
DrCoconut · 04/02/2021 15:44

Spring can't come fast enough, followed by summer. I'm hoping for much better weather than the last couple of years too. It has just rained so much. Back door open, fresh air, daylight and warmth, kids able to get out and play. Can't wait.

I usually love Spring and Summer but after my experience last year I am dreading it. I'm dreading all the music and noise that may come with it. I want the Spring and Summer back I had a couple of years ago where I could sit outside and read ...

Ginfordinner · 04/02/2021 16:53

I suspect that you and I live in parts of the country that don't experience the kind of summers the summer haters on here experience @DrCoconut.

We did have some lovely weather last summer, interspersed with a lot of rain. Most of July last year was quite miserable, cold and wet. We don't get long hot summers with wall to wall sunshine here in Yorkshire.

One of the things I love about spring and summer is the way everything greens up. Leafy trees are so much prettier than bare branches, and I love seeing all the flowers and shrubs that add colour and structure to my garden.

FinalSongbird · 04/02/2021 16:59

Try horse ownership, that will ensure you hate winter with a passion instead!

ilovesooty · 04/02/2021 17:02

@userxx

Yes the end of the year, that cosier feeling of hunkering down I love!

The thought depresses the hell out of me. I feel like a caged bird.

Me too.
Snaketime · 04/02/2021 17:31

I hate spring, but mostly because I suffer from hayfever from the start of spring until the end of summer and it is when all the spiders and wasps come out.

dwinsiaradcymraeg · 04/02/2021 17:32

This is absolutely fascinating. I had no idea some people felt this way about spring! Spring is green, hope, new life, daffodils, lambs and Six Nations. Everything that's wonderful! (You can guess where I grew up, ha!)

Monkeytennis97 · 04/02/2021 17:34

@Ginfordinner

No. I'm the opposite. I can't wait for the longer, lighter evenings. I get SAD, and have poor eyesight, and I see better in brighter light.
Feel the same. I get excited at February as the light begins to change and get brighter. December light is so dark and dingy it makes me feel dizzy and under the weather.
LemonSherbetFancies · 04/02/2021 17:35

Yep. I always feel super anxious in Spring and Summe. Interesting to see I am not alone in that.

Glitterandglow · 04/02/2021 18:32

I’m the same!!! I’ve never met anyone who is in real life though. I get this weird anxious feeling with a hint of doom ... it’s bright but cold and I feel like I should be out doing something productive/fun/outdoorsy but I just don’t want to! And I hate the clocks going forward totally messes up my sleep!
But I LOVE the autumn makes me feel so happy!

OP does the clock change affect you? Maybe it’s all conected in sone weird way ?!
Certain bodies prefer certain seasons?!

crochetmonkey74 · 04/02/2021 18:40

dwin me too, and love all those things but diesnt translate to feeling happy excitement , it's this underlying anxious doom
glitter you explain it well. To be clear, I do actually do things, I'm not hiding and depressed through spring and summer, I like the heat and like wearing fewer clothes and getting a tan, it's just a visceral sense of melancholy or gloom when spring starts. Glad to know I'm not alone though , I've never met anyone else who knows what I'm on about!

Also, clock change doesnt tend to affect me , but that is an interesting idea

Clock change has a massive impact on my mood. I'm counting the weeks till the go forward, it always cheers me up, but going back always depresses me.

Dunno....give me a clue!

Is it Belfast?

Bloodyoverthisnow · 04/02/2021 19:56

My family have this theory that you love the season you were born in . My husband and eldest are summer babies and love the heat, whereas me and my youngest were born in Winter and prefer that. Not good in hot sun.

Howdidweenduphere · 04/02/2021 20:05

I'm totally with you op! I think warmer longer days bring with them the expectation youve got to do something....'Oh it's too beautiful a day to waste' but I don't care, I want to stay in and do nothing. I'm def an Autumn lover..It's fabulous.

Betaldene · 04/02/2021 20:09

Same here op. Love autumn, winter and coziness and colours.

Betaldene · 04/02/2021 20:11

There's a theory about people loving the season they were born into. Not sure if it's actually scientific studies or background to it (probably not). What season we're you born in op?

Bluntness100 · 04/02/2021 20:13

It’s not so massive for me, but I find clocks going forward quite exciting, it’s the signal to me winter is over. Spring ans summer are coming. Sun, lighter nights and mornings, flowers, time outside. And them going back I find a bit depressing as then I know it’s cold wet dark nights, friggen miserable weather again, everything dying back in the garden.

Wrenna · 04/02/2021 20:16

Yes I miss the feeling of cosy nights, getting darker earlier (I don’t change into my pj’s until it turns dark), etc and just the change. I always close my curtains and blinds early when the time changes so it’s dark inside! So I know exactly how you feel!

HereWeGoAgain33 · 04/02/2021 20:20

I'm the opposite. I feel low and anxious when winter is coming, and this winter has been especially hard (due to lockdown, obs). When darkness falls before 5pm I feel there's a long dark night ahead, and I hate it.

I can't wait for sunlight and warmer weather, for flowers to come alive again. Every day I feel better that it's light just a minute or two longer.

crochetmonkey74 · 04/02/2021 20:31

I am an autumn baby so maybe this theory holds water!

I think it's a load of tosh. I was born in November and dislike autumn, and loathe winter.
