Skirts or dresses with decent pockets are rare and beautiful things

Just got some dresses and a skirt from Harkel (sale). Decent pockets in all and I was more excited about that, and the fact they were properly constructed and adequately deep - than any other aspect. They were also colourful and nice cotton and fit me, so yes, all good.

Why don't decent pockets come as standard?

Oh indeed. My 3 most recently purchased dresses all have perfect pockets. Not slide-a-neatly-folded-tissue-into pockets but proper walk-along-with-your-hands-in pockets. I hadn’t realised but it’s clearly become a purchase criteria for me.

Have you ever considered combat trousers? The army surplus store sounds right up your street.

Or maybe a nice florescent bum bag?

QueenofLouisiana · 03/02/2021 22:51

I bought 2 dresses from Hush around Christmas time. Both have good pockets. Grin

Love this thread for the pocket shopping tips!
Even before Covid I would often wear pajama bottoms in the house because they have pockets.
My contribution is Oliver Bonas also do dresses with pockets, although not all so you have to check.
The trousers all have good deep pockets.

MrsClatterbuck · 03/02/2021 23:20

Reminds me of Say Yes to the Dress when a bride trys on a dress with pockets. They are delighted and it sometimes seems to sway them in their choice. I would have loved a wedding dress with pockets.

I used to love my combat trousers from army surplus and my combat boots but I never really went for a bum bag.

I can't really find it in myself to care about "ruining the line" of a dress or whatever... I have always had hips that stuck out and broad shoulders and I wasted so much of my youth hiding my body in baggy clothes because I wasn't small and skinny like the indie girls in their tiny dresses ... Now I don't give a shit. I have pockets and nice dresses.

What really gave me joy this evening was seeing my 14 yo DD gorgeous in her new dress and being delighted with the pockets.

One advantage of making your own clothes is everything can have pockets.

Seeingadistance · 04/02/2021 02:14

@IHaveBrilloHair

Superdry dresses have pockets but a lot of people on here seem to dismiss that brand.
I thought Superdry just made waterproof jackets.

Looking at their dresses now. Thank you!

echt · 04/02/2021 05:51

Uniqlo dresses and skirts have pockets.

SquatBetty · 04/02/2021 06:07

Seasalt also do pockets in their dresses

FlemCandango · 04/02/2021 07:10

Thank you for all the tips on where to buy pocket inclusive dresses... Really encouraging.

I do have a wardrobe full of existing pocket free things and no where to go though. So first I think I need to get on my sewing machine.

Atalune · 04/02/2021 07:26

Does anyone know or have they tried to retro fit a pocket or two on an existing pocket free dress?

CaffiSaliMali · 04/02/2021 08:17

I also came on to say Popsy too. I wish they did skirts, I love a bold patterned skirt in summer with a strappy vest top for work.

Popsy have quite a lot of bold patterns but they also have a lot of pretty floral prints and they do some plainer work style dresses too.

I have a cheap corduroy skirt from Tesco which has amazing pockets, big enough for my phone, which is more than can be said for every pair of jeans I own! I like being able to carry my lip balm, phone and inhaler in a pocket at work instead of having to take my handbag with me everywhere I go.

Naticus · 04/02/2021 18:32

Harkel is another option for skirts & dresses but I don't know if all of them have pockets.

keziahmee · 04/02/2021 19:20

Seasalt has lots of tunics and dresses with pockets - love 'em!

bourbonne · 04/02/2021 19:23

I've never really got this. What would I put in them that wouldn't create a weird bulge? Am I just that inured to a pocketless existence that I can't even imagine it?

Actually, I have an old coat with pockets, and it's basically my new handbag when out on errands with DC.

So I'm undecided on the question.

These are the new dress and skirt I got from Harkel, the pockets are fairly unobtrusive and I am not worried about bulgy-ness.

I'm not into pockets on skirts and dresses. People say it's a feminist issue and maybe it is for them. But I'm okay with pocketless dresses.

Interesting.... You see, with those sort of slanted pockets in a swirly cotton dress or skirt, I'd be worried that my things would fall out of them. Do they not?

(My aforementioned pocketed coat has great stuff square pockets, and they look awful stuffed with my bits and bobs but I'm past caring)

bourbonne · 04/02/2021 19:43

*stiff, not stuff

fastwigglylines · 04/02/2021 19:43

Perfect example of everyday sexism, makes my blood boil!

Men's pockets are designed with functionality in mind, so they get pockets designed to be useable pockets.

Women's pockets are designed with how we look being the most important thing. We're not given big pockets as we might then put stuff in them which would, of course, ruin the line of the outfit / prevent us from showing off the shape of our body, and we can't have that now, can we?

My wedding dress had deep pockets, I was so amazed and it was the icing on the cake for me. 🤣

Minesril · 04/02/2021 19:49

Off topic, but regarding Harkel clearing their warehouse so they can be 'more sustainable': is this actually something to do with Brexit? Grin
I just bought a dress and skirt from them. Both with pockets!

peak2021 · 04/02/2021 19:49

I'll go with the handbag theory. OP YANBU.

Naticus · 04/02/2021 19:55

Oh the rainbow dress is beautiful 😍
