AIBU to think a Captain Tom street party is a bit much?

I didn’t agree with the clap and didn’t clap, so my neighbour knocked to “make sure I was okay”. I chickened out and blamed DS’s bed time 😳 because last time with the NHS clapping a lady on our street ended up completely ostracised from the main gaggle for not clapping a few weeks in a row and I couldn’t be arsed with the hassle of it.

Anyway the long and short of it is she also knocked to invite me to a street party they are throwing for Captain Tom and his memory, they’re printing out pictures and putting them on their front doors, making bunting, all coming out on the drive.

No it’s not hurting anyone but I just think it’s so distasteful - it’s really not about him is it? It’s an excuse to have a jolly. Especially while we are in lockdown.

It’s been made clear on the Facebook group in a long post a few minutes ago that people who don’t attend or put a picture up don’t have community spirit or care about their neighbours.

There’s also another clap tomorrow night with wine apparently.

@littlepattilou if you don't like them, don't read them.

It's really quite simple.

It's the internet, broad range of people, all with different thoughts.

littlepattilou · 03/02/2021 20:16

And if I do have a party for Tom, I promise to invite you all. Grin

Sootybear · 03/02/2021 20:16

I wouldn't mind a street party once we can get back to some normality, but a party for Capt Tom in winter with wine etc sounds just like an excuse for a street piss up. We had clapping at 6.00 this evening for Capt Tom. My partner was up for it so took one for the team. It's sad he's died but I'm glad he got a fantastic holiday in Barbados as his last adventure. Good on him, I say!

@littlepattilou

Bollocks. I mean THIS thread!

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/4155451-NO-to-a-state-funeral-for-Captain-Sir-Tom-Moore-AIBU?pg=5

19.50 and 55 seconds. Read that comment by missrm and tell me people are not berating Tom Moore

That's those threads ... this is this thread.
Talkwhilstyouwalk · 03/02/2021 20:16

Totally agree with you OP! People are bored and looking for an excuse for a jolly/good piss up!

Amen to that! Smile

@littlepattilou I won't be attending, thanks for the thought though.

missrm · 03/02/2021 20:18

@littlepattilou

missrm says...

"Jimmy Saville raised lots for charity too. Just saying..."

For the love of Christ.

It's because everyone is like "but he raised so much money - he deserves it" Aye so did many other people. I'm not mentioning that name again because it was probably not the best example. I'm not saying he was in any way like him.

Have a gin.

colouringindoors · 03/02/2021 20:18

omg. sympathies. I was the only person in my (big) cul de sac not to clap. I don't get it. I'd rather light a candle.

We're well out of our street clique now after we didn't join in the weekly beep the shit outta your car horns then go get pissed in everyone else's garden for carers all summer.

It's quite nice to be the outcasts - they leave us alone and just mutter about us occasionally.

littlepattilou · 03/02/2021 20:19

It's obvious what you meant @missrm

AllMyPrettyOnes · 03/02/2021 20:20

@missrm

I understood your meaning.

And what's that exactly?

Ewww. No. Genuinely I think you need to just take a step back.

Well we couldn’t come so.... Confused

Thank you. It was a little bit silly to use his name.

Oysterbabe · 03/02/2021 20:22

Any chance you can move house by tomorrow? Sounds horrific.
I haven't got involved with any clapping or singing or bell ringing bollocks and no one cares.

rainbownamebow · 03/02/2021 20:23

This is ridiculous. My grandfather also died of covid and served in the war, I didn't see anyone clapping for him or the millions of others!

AgeLikeWine · 03/02/2021 20:23

Street parties?

FFS, this is getting to Diana levels of completely ridiculous mass hysteria. Tom Moore did a great job by raising a lot of money for a good cause. He received plenty of gratitude and recognition during his lifetime. Quite right, too. Now let him rest in peace.

MatildaStoker · 03/02/2021 20:25

I forgot all about the clapping until 6:30 Blush

But, that aside, a street party in February? It does sound like your neighbours are using Captain Tom’s death as an excuse for a party. I agree that it’s a bit distasteful.

ilovemydogandmrobama2 · 03/02/2021 20:27

There was a major bun fight on the street group chat because it was, 'turning political,' Hmm but what neighbours are going to remember is that you did't clap the 99 year old who shuffled around on his zimmerframe and raised a shed load for the NHS.

We clapped.

And took our politics inside.

ChristOnAPeloton · 03/02/2021 20:28

Ew, YANBU. I know we’re all bored and people want any old excuse to have a drink, but really...?

LongCOVID · 03/02/2021 20:29

If you print the names of everyone who died, 10pt font size, four columns across, onto A4... it takes over 415 PAGES before you get to Capt Sir Tom. It's sad he died. It's sad he felt he had to raise money for a tax-funded health service. It's also sad that over 108,000 other people have died, and the government haven't bothered given two hoots about it. Street Party? Ha !

1Morewineplease · 03/02/2021 20:33

Suspect they'll ask for him to be buried in Westminster Abbey.
Just no.
Given what so many anonymous folk have done , in many cases, for decades.
