State funeral

It's not ridiculous...it is what he deserves. A wonderful man who deserves more respect than your post offers...

Volcanoexplorer · 03/02/2021 19:24

Yes, I agree. It’s getting ridiculous now. He seemed like a lovely man who undoubtedly lifted the nations spirits and raised an enormous amount of money for charity, but no to a state funeral. I’m sure he’ll be sadly missed by his family - they seemed very close and they’ll probably want to grieve privately, not in front of the entire nation. Besides funerals are limited to 30 people, would a state funeral even be possible?

SmidgenofaPigeon · 03/02/2021 19:26

As if a state funeral would be an option right now!

His family are pretty affluent, I’m sure they can afford him some pomp and ceremony IF they think that’s what he would have wanted. They’ll know best.

Redglitter · 03/02/2021 19:26

How on earth do they propose a state funeral would work with the current restrictions Confused

Rockbird · 03/02/2021 19:27

Oh this is getting insane. I know we haven't got much else to do with ourselves at the moment but get a grip FGS. He seemed a nice bloke, he did a good thing, I'm sure his family will miss him greatly but let's get some perspective.

insancerre · 03/02/2021 19:29

Really?
No
Just no

Ilikewinter · 03/02/2021 19:30

Do we get a day off work, if so im in.....oh wait a minute I work in a pharmacy so no ill be at work like i have done every frickin day of the pandemic.
Yes he did a great thing but no he shouldn't have a state funeral.

PicsInRed · 03/02/2021 19:30

All respect to him, but would even the Queen receive a full state funeral at the moment?

We're in lockdown and parts of the country were literally told today by Matt Hancock to basically rummage expired weetabix from the back of the cupboards rather than go to a supermarket?

mrsbyers · 03/02/2021 19:30

Absolute stupidity

There's already a thread on this. But I agree.

BritWifeinUSA · 03/02/2021 19:32

Kirsty Howard should have had a state funeral then.

Wrongsideofhistorymyarse · 03/02/2021 19:33

It's nonsensical.

The last person to receive a state funeral was Churchill FFS.

x2boys · 03/02/2021 19:34

Of course there won't be people start petitions for all kinds of reasons most don't get anywhere

FredaFox · 03/02/2021 19:34

And who is paying for it??
The Country is on its arse and you want to spend money on a folly, what about all the thousands of people who have died before him?
Don’t get me wrong he did a lot if you’d and will be remembered fondly by many but I don’t want my taxes wasted on this

FredaFox · 03/02/2021 19:34

Of good
Damn phone

SmidgenofaPigeon · 03/02/2021 19:35

Didn’t Diana have a state funeral Confused

iklboo · 03/02/2021 19:36

Didn’t Diana have a state funeral

Yes but she was mother of the heir to the throne and there wasn't a pandemic on at that time.

StoneofDestiny · 03/02/2021 19:37

The idea is ridiculous. Apart from anything else it would ignore all the efforts done by others in secret and in public to raise money or inspire others. I vividly remember Stephen Sutton aged 19 who, while dying, raised nearly 5 million for the Teenage Cancer Trust. I remember because my own child was going through the trauma too.

Stephen inspired us all to keep fighting and keep contributing. What an achieve the for a 19 year old on his death bed.

Stephen and Captain Tim are only 2 of many many thousands doing things to inspire and raise funds.n
Don't start cherry picking on age/status/fame/popularity.

Sorry, I hadn't seen that one. Genuinely read it like EH? pardon?!

SmidgenofaPigeon · 03/02/2021 19:37

I know that @iklboo! I was asking in response to another poster saying that Churchill was the last person to have one.

I’m not comparing her to Captain Tom 😂

He "deserves" a state funeral??

Really?

Why?

So eloquently put. This is what I wanted to say.

Didn’t Diana have a state funeral Confused
No, she had a ceremonial funeral.
SmidgenofaPigeon · 03/02/2021 19:38

Well blast me, I always assumed that was a state one 🤷🏻‍♀️
