DD tells me I am UNFAIR and that all her friends are allowed to stay up late playing Roblox and she is the only one who has to go to bed. I have said lights out at 10. Last night she was texting me angry messages at 1030 about how mean I am.

Am I out of touch? For reference she gets up at 8am at the moment because of online schooling, normal times it would be 7am but then I would say lights out at 930.

9.30ish, but he's awake from 6am! (or earlier) as he's autistic and doesn't sleep well.

Anonanon12 · 03/02/2021 10:09

My 12 year old goes to bed at 930 but has to leave his phone downstairs and if it's sneaked up then he looses it for a day or 2.
I used to want him in bed at 9 but my partner increased it to 930 as I like to go to bed quite early at 9 but my partner is up till 10 ish or 11 weekends so we sort of met in the middle

Mochatatts · 03/02/2021 10:15

My just 13 year old goes to bed between 9 and 9.30pm when hes with me. No phones upstairs here either. He does share with his 9 year old brother though so they've always gone to bed at the same time. I've always been firm about bedtimes and the need to have a good night's sleep for their wellbeing and growing etc. If they mess about they know they'll go up even earlier or loose some screen time the following day. There isn't a TV in their bedroom here either. If they can't sleep they've plenty of books or quiet things to do, rubix cube, lego, colouring

MrsBungle · 03/02/2021 10:18

My 12 year old goes at 9:30pm, 10 at the weekend. No phones upstairs here either and no TV in room.

tvsnacking · 03/02/2021 10:18

I have a 12 year Old Girl. She is up before the rest of us and is good in School. I have no idea when she goes to bed. A few months ago she asked for no bed time and i Said as long as she does what is needed and she is not grumpy, we could try.
She is up 1 1/2 hours before School , no problem .

Crazycakelady17 · 03/02/2021 10:18

Hotcuppatea · 03/02/2021 10:20

On school nights, my 13yr old goes to bed at 9.15 and is woken up at 7.30am. Weekends its more like 10.15 .

LemonBreeland · 03/02/2021 10:20

My 13 you goes to bed at 9.30.

RedHelenB · 03/02/2021 10:24

Your 16 year old has a bedtime?

OverTheRainbow88 · 03/02/2021 10:29

@RedHelenB

I wish all 16 year olds had a bedtime.

I teach 16 year olds, most of them they could do with a better nights sleep that’s for sure!

TheTurnOfTheScrew · 03/02/2021 10:32

10 on a school night, flexible at weekends and school holidays.
Phone and ipad on charge downstairs overnight.

RosesforMama · 03/02/2021 10:37

My 13 year old is my 3rd and I am slightly ashamed to say he takes himself to bed when he is tired. Usually between 10 and 11:30.

I feel like I over parented my eldest and he struggles with personal responsibility. Maybe I have stepped back too far with this one...

My 10 year old does get sent to bed, lights out 9:30 as school isn't on ATM so there's no need to get up until 8:30.

LunaHardy · 03/02/2021 10:39

My 13 yo goes to bed at 10pm and lights out/phone on charge on the other side of the room at 10:30.

Annabell80 · 03/02/2021 10:44

Mine are 12 and 14. Bedtime in the week is 9 but they are allowed electronics until 9:30.
On weekends they don't really have a bedtime but are usually in bed by 10.

Angel2702 · 03/02/2021 10:46

9.30 we have to leave for school at 7.30am usually so have to be up by 6.30. Online school starts at 8.15 so still get up to keep in routine.

Monkeytapper · 03/02/2021 10:48

My 12 year old DS and 10 year old DD go to be at 9.30 on ‘school nights’ then about 10-10.30 on weekends and they complain that’s early compared to friends.

starbrightstarlight8888 · 03/02/2021 10:51

My 11 yo goes to bed around 10pm.

I agree with this. Up until the lockdown in Nov/Dec I worked in an FE college and the amount of 16 year olds who came in having been up gaming or chatting to their friends until the small hours was ridiculous. Then they’d sit yawning and complaining how tired they were and not be able to complete their work to a decent standard. May be not a strict bedtime, but definitely keeping an eye on their screen usage and installing good bedtime habits.

My 13 year old goes to be around 9:30, but I think actually goes to sleep around 10pm. Friday and Saturday night we are more lenient.

Whatisthisfuckery · 03/02/2021 10:59

My 13 tends to go 9:30 - 10:00. Sometimes he goes earlier if he’s tired, and obviously at weekends it’s later. As long as he does all he’s supposed to and doesn’t end up tired I let him get on with it. I think we’ve both had enough of bedtime battles.

His phone shuts off at 9pm on a school night though, and his laptop stays outside his room. He does have a telly but it’s a bit much to shift that every night.

WendyJames35 · 03/02/2021 11:02

My 13 yr old ds is supposed to be in bed by 10, but manages to string it out until 10.30ish.

If he was going to school, I'd be far stricter about lights out by 10, as he would have to be up much earlier. He wakes around 8 to start work at 8.45 at the moment.

GlittercheeksOakleaf · 03/02/2021 11:04

14/13/12 yos all go to bed between 9 and 10pm. Devices are left downstairs.

FrankButchersDickieBow · 03/02/2021 11:06

12yo dd goes at 10.30pm, lights out at 11pm.

No phone or screens allowed upstairs after 10.

JollyAndBright · 03/02/2021 11:12

My DS is almost 14, his computer goes off at 8.45 and he’s expected to be getting ready for bed by 9, sometime he reads for a little while but is usually lights out by 9.30.

He said most of his friends have to be ‘offline’ between 8 and 9, he plays with a lot of friends he’s made who are outside of the uk and they are the only ones who would still be online at 10pm.

I really think she’s just using the “everyone else is allowed to do it so why can’t I?’’ Argument to try to pull one over on you.

DS also isn’t allowed his phone in his room overnight, it goes on a table on the landing where he has access to it if he needs it but it is out of the reach of temptation to play games in the middle of the night.

Bbq1 · 03/02/2021 11:38

Suppose it's dependent on what time dc get up but an 8.45 bedtime for a 14 year old?! Really? My ds is 15 and if I said bedtime at 8.45 he would think I was joking.

Fastedbrownie · 03/02/2021 11:40

10:30 on weeknights, light out at 11.
12:30 on weekends. Lights out.
