To think you can't get pregnant this way?

DH and I have been having leakage problems with condoms - not from the top - the condom didn't split - but slightly from the bottom, near the opening. I feel like a teenager for asking this, obviously I know that no contraception method is 100% safe, but am I right in thinking that it would be very unfortunate to get pregnant this way? A small amount of sperm would have to find its way in and then travel up all the way to the cervix - not impossible, but very unlikely right? You always hear of condoms breaking but never of leakage...

@SunsetGirl sorry, I meant there is only one width/size available for the Durex ones he likes. I will investigate as well though!

I once had to buy the condoms for a partner because the ones he had were always too big.
Never had a leak with the right size properly fitted.

RhubarbTea · 02/02/2021 21:21

I once dated a guy who had to wear size large condoms and the thing was like a baby's arm. It was terrifying. Sounds like your chap doesn't need them (which isn't a terrible thing!) Grin

Peppafrig · 02/02/2021 21:31

He needs to buy small ones . I know they do large ones but I don’t know if they cater for skinny penises.

blobblob · 02/02/2021 21:31

A cap/diaphragm. Used one for years - no hormones. Not much of a faff once you are used to it and it adds an extra level of protection.

StanfordPines · 02/02/2021 21:38

Yep. Friend of mine got pregnant without having had penetrative sex.

EdgeOfACoin · 02/02/2021 21:40

It would be so, so unlikely. Yes, it only takes one sperm, but the vast majority sperm never make it to the egg at all, even when it is ejaculated directly into the vagina when the woman is at her most fertile.

I don't think you should be lax and it sounds as though he might want to consider a different brand of condom, but the odds of you getting pregnant from leakage is probably about as likely as you winning the lottery.

Don't most condoms have spermicide on them, anyway?

CookieMumsters · 02/02/2021 21:45

I think you call the top what I would call the bottom, and vice versa. I was well confused Grin

Weirdfan · 02/02/2021 21:49

Any idea where you'd get a diaphragm these days blobblob? I did try a couple of years ago but our FPC has closed down and the swanky new sexual health clinic that's replaced it doesn't do them, nor does the GP 🤨

Thelnebriati · 02/02/2021 22:05

If you cant get a cap, use spermicide.

I agree with you that, with the OP being 37 and condoms having spermicide, it's probably not an absolute certainty she'll be knocked up. But if I'm right (and I am only basing this on what I've been told by fertility specialists) the thing about sperm not reaching the egg is a bit off.

Sure some sperm have 'low motility' and it can be an issue, but the main reason most sperm don't make it to the egg is simply that there are so very many and they can't all 'win'. If a man who's basically fertile ejaculates during sex, the vast majority of his sperm won't result in a pregnancy for the simple reason there's (usually) only one egg there. The limiting factor is the egg, not the sperm.

Eckhart · 02/02/2021 22:18

Surely, unless it's impossible, you want to avoid it? I mean, what likelihood percentage would you be ok with? 10%? 3%? It's moot, isn't it? If you can get pregnant that way and you don't want to get pregnant, then you do it a different way.

So out of all the condoms available, he insists on the one that doesn't work, is that what you mean?

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 02/02/2021 22:21

I was told, in the playground, that if you immediately get out of bed after sex and jump up and down the little fishy things fall out and you'll be OK.

P.S. I am not a doctor.

KevinTheBird · 02/02/2021 22:21

I got pregnant 10 years after Dh had a vasectomy. Unless you don’t mind getting pregnant you really need to use condoms that fit and/ or another form of contraception.

diamondsr4u · 02/02/2021 22:31

100% possible. That's exactly how I got pregnant 😂

TheOtherBoelynGirl · 02/02/2021 22:38

Was I really the only one thinking this was going to be about bum sex?

Seems legit.

namethatrandomlychanges · 02/02/2021 22:41

try other brands
check sizing
put it on properly
remove penis after ejaculation - losing erection will leave space for leakage.
Is it leakage or just moistness/lubrication
does DH secretly want you to get pregnant

IEat · 02/02/2021 22:45

One sperm is all it takes

Seems so...
toocold54 · 02/02/2021 22:59

The only time I’ve had sperm at the bottom was when it split slightly because the condom was too small.

But yes you can get pregnant, even from one tiny sperm on someone’s fingers - very unlikely though but still possible.
Are you on any other contraception like the pill?

GabsAlot · 02/02/2021 23:03

erm its too big hes trying to pass it off as the only one he will get because hes embarrassed to buy smaller

candycane222 · 02/02/2021 23:10

I prefer a willy the right size rather ghan too big. If it's too big it doesn't get round the corners do well. So perhaps you need to yell him something similar. And yes, good friend of mine fell pregnant after - um, heavy petting Grin

candycane222 · 02/02/2021 23:10

Gah my typing!!!
