He did more in his last year than most of us manage in a lifetime.

Truly a life well lived.

He was a total gentleman however he shouldn’t have gone to Barbados. He didn’t wear a mask on the flights and I know this because my friend worked the BA flight. . The sad thing he couldn’t have a vaccine due to having pneumonia and now his daughter has COVID because of him. Clearly not shielding like he was meant too. I hope he sleeps peacefully as he lived a full life.

Well sending kids into school/nursery or going into work when you can wfh isn't technically breaking the rules either....hope none of you naysayers are doing that?

chilling19 · 02/02/2021 20:30

What a shame. It would have been nice if he could have been with us when we come out the other side. RIP.

caringcarer · 02/02/2021 20:31

A life well lived and a National Hero. Rip Captain Tom.

Goodnight Mr Tom.
RIP

Well thanks a lot, Willow. Was ok until I read that. Now ... 😭

Lelophants · 02/02/2021 20:32

I'm honestly so upset. After all that he did, walking around his garden. How did he get covid? Sad ironic.

MsMiaWallace · 02/02/2021 20:34

A true inspiration!

Someone who hadn't been sheltering properly & has visited Sir Tom must feel shit.

What on earth is “right wing”
about feeling sad that a lovely old man who cared about and did his best for other people has died of a very nasty disease that brings about an horrible ending?

What a strange thing to say.

TokyoSashimi · 02/02/2021 20:42

What a breathtaking lack of empathy randomer. And to dress it up as being rightwing to care that someone has died. It's a new low.

Countrywalking · 02/02/2021 20:42

And what about the poor people of Barbados

Countrywalking · 02/02/2021 20:43

He and his family were selfish to travel whilst the rest of us are trying to circuit break and stop the spread of covid.

randomer · 02/02/2021 20:43

No its not a breath taking lack of empathy. Sad loss for the family and friends. He seemed like a nice guy who did a nice thing.

Then it got silly.

SoupDragon · 02/02/2021 20:44

Namechange after your deletions, @Happyislucy...?

TokyoSashimi · 02/02/2021 20:45

Then I suggest you re-read your own post. because there was not an ounce of empathy in it.

Porcupineintherough · 02/02/2021 20:45

I guess that if the government of Barbados didnt want holiday makers they'd have forbidden people to come on holiday. But the truth is it is a country whose economy is highly dependent on tourism.

TokyoSashimi · 02/02/2021 20:46

Honestly thank you MNHQ for deleting that post.

ParlezVousWronglais · 02/02/2021 20:47

I remember thinking last year that if Captain Tom ever dies of Covid the country just won’t be able to bear it.
Yet here we are.

We're not allowed to say so, though.
randomer · 02/02/2021 20:51

apparently not? how very odd.

MarshaBradyo · 02/02/2021 20:51

His life spanned from one pandemic to the next

Quite something 100 years

wendyleen · 02/02/2021 20:52

I had a little cry when I heard.

He did such a great job of keeping everyone going.

StCharlotte · 02/02/2021 20:52

I do know his correct title of course but I deliberately went with "Captain Tom" as that's how we got to know him and I think that's how he'll be remembered.

Being wrong isn't always wrong Smile

I agree with this. He did seem a genuinely lovely guy but so are thousands of others, also thousands of other, older and younger people do lots for charity but keep it quiet. I'm not saying he wanted publicity but he got it anyway.

Like I said he did seem a lovely, true gentleman but I did feel it all got a bit silly and I haven't cried or felt any particular sadness.
When my young neighbour died of covid, i cried.
