AIBU Nanny Travel costs

intheshedyes · 01/02/2021 23:18

Hello all,

We hired a new part time nanny who does the morning and after school runs. Two of my children need a train to get to school so pay my nanny travel costs from going to take them to school in the morning and then when she is bringing them back home.

In the mornings, my nanny rides her bike and parks her bike near our closest station. She asked me that once she drops the children to school, can she use the top up travel card, to come back to the station and pick up her bike to drive home.

AIBU to say no. I don't want to pay too much travel as it is!

This cannot be serious??

You want to pay for your Nanny to travel one way via train, and then effectively leave her stranded until home time? If you can't afford her travel costs BOTH WAYS you cannot afford to pay someone else to take your kids to school.

SmidgenofaPigeon · 01/02/2021 23:49

Ok OP go and see if anyone agreed with you on your other thread.

SPOILER. They don’t.

SunsetSenora · 01/02/2021 23:51

YABU

@intheshedyes

Not going to engage in this thread.

Thank you for the very few helpful replies.

The nanny asked me. I haven't replied to her yet. Hence I came to ask Mumsnet to ask.... very new to the whole nannying and a bit out of depth. I will pay her.

Good night all.

It’s not about being new to having a Nanny, OP.

It’s about common sense. If you were hired to drive a truck to point B and your boss paid for your gas and toll from A to B but asked you to pay from B back to A you would think he is crazy and you would never take the job.

Why would you even think it was a reasonable idea for your Nanny to split the traveling cost with you to get YOUR kids to school. Doesn’t she already spend enough on your family by coming to and from you just to get your kids to school? (even if it’s biking, it’s still time and wear and tear on her bike).

DicklessWonder · 01/02/2021 23:51

Hope you’ve got the other employer responsibilities right, OP.

tobedtoMNandfart · 01/02/2021 23:51

Same tired old AIBU format.
OP- AIBU?
Rest of the world - YES!!!
OP -

Invisimamma · 01/02/2021 23:52

You should also be paying for her time until she returns to starting point. Put yourself in her shoes and think about what you would expect from an employer.

Indecisive12 · 01/02/2021 23:54

Still trying to close my mouth

Arobase · 01/02/2021 23:59

As pp have said, this isn't about being new to having a nanny. I assume OP isn't coming back, but I'd love to know what her original idea was - that the nanny would pay for her journeys when on her way back from dropping the kids, and when collecting them in the afternoon; or that she wouldn't travel back and would simply hang around near the school all day. You don't need any experience of employing a nanny to work out what the problems with that might be.

On the off-chance that OP is actually reading, is it worth looking into buying the nanny a season ticket during term time so that it costs no extra no matter how many journeys she makes?

Turnedouttoes · 02/02/2021 00:05

I’m surprised she even asked you. I would probably just assume that’s what you expect me to do.

intheshedyes · 02/02/2021 00:08

"..or that she wouldn't travel back and would simply hang around near the school all day..."

Of course not.

She does a few hours during the week and less on school holidays (we pay her full rate incase anyone asks). I wasn't too sure if a season ticket would be worth it. I will look into it.

Excited101 · 02/02/2021 00:12

If I was your nanny, I wouldn’t even be asking!

Arobase · 02/02/2021 00:27

Thanks for answering, OP. So were you expecting the nanny to fund the journey back in the morning and the journey to collect in the afternoon? Could you explain why?

Derbee · 02/02/2021 00:37

You tight cow! I suspect your nanny won’t last long. You sound like a pretty miserable employer

AbsentmindedWoman · 02/02/2021 00:38

@DicklessWonder

1- Nanny rides to the station near OP’s house. 2- Collects children and takes them on the train to school - OP pays.^ 3- comes back on train for bike - OP does not want to pay 4- gets train to school to collect children - OP does not want to pay 5- brings children back on train and stays for however long - OP pays
This is a good summary, but what's the bit in the OP about driving then? That confused me Confused

OP, you should pay the travel. How on earth can you think it is fair otherwise?

Sunnydays999 · 02/02/2021 00:39

You are very very unreasonable- and surely you know that

dottiedaisee · 02/02/2021 00:45

I think she is now stewing in bed ...such a ray of sunshine 😍

intheshedyes · 02/02/2021 00:52

dottiedaisee Ha! Grin Just finished writing up an assignment, had a nice brew and now going to bed.

The Banny dies two journeys, so you lay for both. You can’t expect her to take your kids to school for you and on,t pay half a journey each time

Chloemol · 02/02/2021 01:12

Nanny does

Annedunne181 · 02/02/2021 01:43

OP can you explain more about your nannys trip.

It sounds like she gets a train from your house to the school. You pay for this.
And then she gets a train back to your house. You want her to pay for this.

Is that right?
Do you not see how that sounds very strange?

What is she supposed to do. Stay around the school all day?

EmmaGrundyForPM · 02/02/2021 04:18

I can't believe you haven't paid her for her travel. YABVVVVU.

Please don't say you didn't know because you've never had a nanny before. You must have claimed expenses at work at some point. Have you always claimed mileage/travel expenses for a return journey? Yes, of course you have, because no one in their right mind would put up with an employer only paying them to get to a meeting but not come back again.

If I was your nanny I'd be looking fur another job

Porkypie2021 · 02/02/2021 04:36

@Cloemol

I didn't think it would be possible but you made even less sense than the OP!

RestingPandaFace · 02/02/2021 04:43

YABU unless you pay for all travel and the hours required to return to the start point including any waiting around for a return train.
