Watching the news about the coup there and I thought it must be quite a small country but now I've looked it up it's really not. Obviously I am embarrassed about my own lack of geography knowledge. Has everyone else heard of it or known much about this country before?

Just spoken this minute to my friend in Yangon on FB chat. She tells me they are shooting people now there.
And they are closing down the internet any minute.
😢😭

South Yangon, she says.

Roussette · 29/03/2021 19:35

She has just said this...

"Today already 12 unarmed civilians were killed. They are using snipers and hand grenades against our people.

24 people are seriously injured and they cannot get medical treatment because the military is not allowing any medical through to South Dagon. And all hospitals are being seized by them so they arrest the injured people.

Please help us"

(She then gave addresses of Amnesty, UN, etc)

They've been firing rocket propelled grenades etc.

One thing that concerns me is that there are no reports of sexual violence.
We know that the same units that went up against the Rohingya are part of this so it's undoubtedly happening. In traditional society over there discussion of sex is basically taboo, so the poor victims will be silenced.

Posting here as I know there are a few with friends etc living in Myanmar. My DB lives/works in Rakhine & we've noticed he hasn't been online since Saturday. Also noticed that there are a lot less accounts of the atrocities in the media this week. I know internet has been cut previously but this seems to be the longest period yet. Anyone else with contacts there noticed this?
