To have only just heard of Myanmar?

Watching the news about the coup there and I thought it must be quite a small country but now I've looked it up it's really not. Obviously I am embarrassed about my own lack of geography knowledge. Has everyone else heard of it or known much about this country before?

OP posts:

Chinese troops were brought into Yangon last night under cover of an Internet and radar blackout.

The state TV station has stated that they are there to assist Myanmar troops with anti-terrorist activity. They have been seen on the streets.

Thanks for the update. My friend has got her Twitter back and has done some links. And there's some people to follow on there who are updating

DAY 13 + 28 Days After The Military Coup:

A pregnant woman was shot dead point blank in the head in Mandalay today. She was harboring 20 protesters in her home who were hiding from the police. What compels a human being to kill an expecting mother is beyond me. Sexual violence and torture are now being widely used

More than 70 peaceful protestors were killed yesterday. Today more troops are rolling into the City of Yangon from the Direction of Rakhine state. Internet services are being cut again and the slaughter is only going to get worse.

Please, please, please can I beg Mumsnetters to lobby their MPs and keep these poor, poor people in the news - easily completed, pro forma letters that automatically reach your MP

The Burmese military are about to cut of all Internet and mobile networks to help them carry on the slaughter unchecked.

Is anyone actually reading this? Women (pregnant or not) children, men, doctors, mums and monks are being shot in the street with high powered military weapons. Reports of sexual violence are increasing along with torture. The same troops that committed genocide against the Rohingya are now on their way into Yangon turning on more of their own people.

JFCO · 15/03/2021 16:48

English education system results at it's best! Hmm

Mingalabar · 15/03/2021 16:54

@JFCO I'm sorry, I don't get your point?

LaurieFairyCake · 15/03/2021 16:57

Lol I have the news on CONSTANTLY and had no idea the Czech Republic had changed its name

FedNlanders · 15/03/2021 16:59

@Chicchicchicchiclana

Yes I know a little bit about Myanmar and it's history. I'm not particularly well read or across current affairs or recent global history.

Had you never heard of Aung San Suu Kyi and her very famous house arrest of something like 15 years?

Had you not heard of the terrible genocide of the Rohingya people since 2016?

I'm sure these have been covered fairly extensively in the news.

I've not heard of either of those.

I think she’s referring to the OP.

I’m still reading & still concerned about Myanmar.

Horrible :(
orangenasturtium · 15/03/2021 17:09

Maybe it's better to start a new thread @Mingalabar so people read your post? I'm guessing lots of people might just read the OPs posts rather than the whole thread.

Smashedavacado · 17/03/2021 11:38

@mingalabar its just horrific. Have sent an email to MP but feel so helpless.

My DB is currently in Rakhine so have a personal interest but my heart goes out to the people of Myanmar. Just don't know what will happen - for all the "condemnation" from other countries no action & it just gets worse 😞

@Mingalabar

I missed your recent posts.
For some bizarre reason threads I'm on or threads I'm watching sometimes drop certain threads and this was one of them. I started a thread in Site Stuff asking MN about why.

That is shocking to hear. I am going to message my friend on FB and see if I can hear anything. Now you mention it, she has gone very quiet because she was doing a lot of links, and hasn't been lately.

I wish there was more international outcry about this.

HeadLikeAFuckinOrange · 18/03/2021 13:17

Chimeraforce
Yeah I knew it as Burma and that lots of cheap clothing is made there and that there is alleged genocide of the rohinga moslems

Wow, this has just reminded me - your use of the word moslem has transported me back to the 1980s, I remember that being the standard term for followers of Islam then. I was really young, but the next time I remember a story on TV it had switched to Muslim. I asked my mum, she said she didn't know (pre - Google Grin)
I've realised I still don't know. Does everyone else - or is this something I missed due to age? Or is it just a case of you can't know you're unaware of something everyone just knows until you know?

littlewhitestar · 18/03/2021 16:11

I can't properly answer your question @HeadLikeAFuckinOrange but I remember it as muslim in the 80s, moslem is very old fashioned. I guess multiple spellings arose historically because there was no standardisation of how to transliterate words from Arabic script. Muslim is a better approximation of the pronunciation though.

Mingalabar · 18/03/2021 17:35

Musselim / Musselman are other early variations that I've seen written.

The horror continues. Mobile Internet cut off indefinitely, "Police"
and Army still waging terror campaigns and executing people on the street.

Sexual violence against detainees is reported as it was in the Rohingya genocide (the very same individuals and army regiments are involved)

Please read into this, write to your MP via Burma Campaign UK (links in thread) and don't forget these lovely kind people.

Statement by Ambassadors to Myanmar on Regime's Brutal Crackdowns

March 19, 2021
The brutal violence against unarmed civilians by the security forces in Hlaing Tharyar and elsewhere in Myanmar, often under the cover of darkness, is immoral and indefensible. We call on Myanmar’s military to cease all violence against people of Myanmar, release all detainees, lift martial law and the nationwide state of emergency, remove telecommunications restrictions, and restore the democratically elected government. We support the right of the people of Myanmar to protest peacefully and support their right to freely access information. Internet blackouts and the suppression of the media will not hide the military’s abhorrent actions.
Signed by the Ambassadors to Myanmar from the Delegation of the EU and European Union Member States with presence in Myanmar: Denmark, Czech Republic, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Spain, and Sweden; the United Kingdom; and the United States.

Roussette · 19/03/2021 12:30

That statement spells it out. Shock

Mingalabar · 29/03/2021 12:43

Please read this and give your support. The people are being massacred - rocket propelled grenades being launched into houses, children shot in the street, funerals attacked, bodies used as bait for snipers.

An 11 year old girl, shot dead. Buried with her precious wax crayons and dolls. The pictures from the original news report will stay with me forever.

Smashedavacado · 29/03/2021 13:45

Truly shocking.
I have just contacted our MP who is one of the ones sanctioned last week by the Chinese. I don't know why I expected more but yet another statement of condemnation.
As long as the military have the support of Russia & China I just can't see that any sanctions will have any impact and there will be no physical intervention.
