If you had the chance, would you move away from the UK?
Where to and for what reasons?
Just curious :)

I have.

I moved to the US in my 20s. Loved it but wanted to bring up my kids in the UK so moved back in my late 30s when they were infants. Uk wasn't anything like I remembered and we moved back to the US after just a few years. I quite fancy trying other countries too, but I'm more reluctant now my kids are secondary school age.
@Avaganda DH is a software architect, his company paid for us to come to the US and consequently Green Cards. I couldn’t work for the first few years and that was really hard, now U.K. working again and re-establishing my career so it grow here but will also put me back in the same level as here if we move back to the U.K. I wouldn’t do another move where I had to start all over again - even if he was paid mega bucks to compensate, I have hated being financially dependant
@Kobanidaughters We're considering a move back to the UK. I was able to work as soon as I came to the US, but I hadn't really considered that I'd have to take a step back down when going home again. What makes you think that might be the case? Is it because you had to take the time out of the workforce in general? (Sorry if that's nosy, just really made me think...)

BumbleBeegu · 05/02/2021 21:25

Yes...and have done so several times with barely a thought 🤷‍♀️ I've lived/worked overseas for 17 years (been back 3 years). Regretting coming back now but didn't have much choice at the time. Too old now to go again, but if you have the chance OP, grab it!!

Skysblue · 06/02/2021 22:24

Not sure what you mean ‘if you had the chance’ - I mean most people are able to get a job overseas if they want one I think? They could until last year anyway.

I’ve always loved living in the UK until the brexit referendum, seems like everyone went mad then, and the country is still spiralling. I especially hate all the recent attacks on single sex private spaces / primary schools teaching Stonewall pseudoscience and sexist stereotypes. I am wondering whether we should consider a move to a more sane country, especially if Britain is going to spend the next few decades picking fights with Europe until it gets serious. But I do like the weather here. I’ve lived in places where the summer is a lot hotter and I hated that; and been to places where winter is a lot colder and I didn’t like that. English climate may be too wet but it’s never too hot or too cold to go for a walk, it’s always green and we don’t have sharks/bears/wolves/giant spiders. Bits of America are nice but they’re weird about guns. Germany/ Italy/ France/ Slovenia are lovely but I don’t have the languages. New Zealand or Canada are cool but bit far away from relatives...

It’s ok here. But yes would rather have been born in Australia/NZ.

KobaniDaughters · 06/02/2021 22:48

@IncorrigibleTitmouse nature of the industry I’m in - all based on who know and how you network and eventually
How “big” you are (if you make it that far). I don’t do a job where there is the usual job application process

Lots of UK bashing on this thread, but I love living here. I like that my best friend has known me since I was 10, and knows all my family. I like that our families are all within 2 hours of here. I know a few people who have emigrated and it's not all great

DanceLikeAdamAnt · 07/02/2021 08:47

I know a few people who emigrated to Australia and the pictures look wonderful but I would not be able to cope with the wildlife.

Janedownourlane · 07/02/2021 09:08

Yes, The Netherlands, but probably biased as DS lives there now.

Littlecaf · 07/02/2021 09:21

Have recently looked at visa for Canada, NZ & Australia. Despite DP & being chartered professionals, our profession isn’t on any of the lists. The DCs are happy in school and the GPs live round the corner now so it’ll probably never happen.

If the GPS weren’t around and our professions were wanted ones, even with DCs we’d probably try. There’s just too many hurdles right now!

Yamashita40 · 07/02/2021 09:44

I've lived abroad before in the Middle East and Thailand. We couldn't move abroad now as my husband needs the NHS for his life limiting illness.

I'm glad I got to do it though as I feel like it changes your perception for the rest of your life.

TheVanguardSix · 07/02/2021 10:20

Norway. I'd live in Norway. Or near the seaside in Italy.
