Do you live near the sea and a city?

If you do, where do you live? We want to uproot and start new somewhere as we’ve had enough of Cornwall. I love big cities and my partner loves the beach so trying to find somewhere that has both!

Sorry not really an aibu but wanted a big range of answers so we can explore properties.

With that budget I think you can rule out the whole of the south east. I’d be looking further north.

I was going to say southsea, lovely and in normal times they have a fabulous festival every August bank hol.

Glitterblue · 31/01/2021 13:51

We're on the North East Coast, both Edinburgh and Newcastle are driving distance, and the train to Edinburgh is under an hour. The Coast further up towards Edinburgh is lovely too, or past Edinburgh into Fife.

Yuddiesorno · 31/01/2021 13:52

Just interested to know what "backward" means?

riotlady · 31/01/2021 13:54

Northumberland. Beautiful coast and short trip to Newcastle (depending on how far north you go). 400k would get you a lovely house in most places round here too

BingBongToTheMoon · 31/01/2021 13:54

Troon/ Prestwick 30/40 minutes from Glasgow.

category12 · 31/01/2021 13:55

Foolishness to have had enough of Cornwall.

BingBongToTheMoon · 31/01/2021 13:55

Sorry.....I didn’t RFT. SORRY.

JosieB68 · 31/01/2021 13:55

Maybe a bit too far away but Aberdeen?

emmathedilemma · 31/01/2021 13:58

You can probably forget being within striking distance of the beach and the city of Edinburgh for that budget sadly :(

DublinDoris2000 · 31/01/2021 13:58

South Dublin. I'm 15 mins to the beaches, 10 mins in the other direction to escape the city towards the mountains. But house are expensive and small for the price.

sHREDDIES19 · 31/01/2021 13:59

I don’t live in Swansea but have been many times and it’s great as you have the beach, access to Cardiff and the Gower for more amazing beaches. Plus it’s affordable with some lovely areas. Lots of green space.

Thewiseoneincognito · 31/01/2021 14:01

Can I ask where in cornwall you are and why you’ve had enough? Only because I want to move to Cornwall 😂🤣

Greenandcabbagelooking · 31/01/2021 14:01

Canterbury - six miles to the coast at Whitstable.

CatAndHisKit · 31/01/2021 14:01

Not Bristol - it's nowhere near the actual useable coast! (I love Bristol btw).

LadyEloise · 31/01/2021 14:02

Dublin

CatAndHisKit · 31/01/2021 14:02

I'd say, Hove. Or Canterbury.

davidsSchitt · 31/01/2021 14:02

"Just interested to know what "backward" means?"

Not current? Old fashioned views, an undercurrent of misogyny/homophobia/racism possibly.

A bit like living in 1958

Shedbuilder · 31/01/2021 14:02

Cardiff is a fabulous small city with good access to countryside and beaches at Barry. Check out Penarth, ten minutes on the train from Cardiff with a pier and a shingle beach and a buzzy feel.

Or go west to Swansea/ Mumbles. Huge sandy beach at the heart of the city. Lots of other lovely sandy beaches, surfing etc within 20-30 minutes walk/ cycle/ drive. Swansea's a pretty crap city — deprivation, badly redeveloped over the years, not as buzzy as some other cities. But people are slowly recognising that the quality of life here is great. Lots of outdoor sports, activities, cycling, watersports.

Edinburgh. Fabulous city, arts, culture. Easy reach of beaches and seaside.

@Colorindex
Brighton is has-been which isnt a crime, but it's now too overpriced for what it is’

Oh, absolutely. In fact we’re full up so don’t anyone bother coming here 😂

lilroo87 · 31/01/2021 14:06

I lived in cities/towns for 30 years and moved to Cornwall last year. I absolutely love it and never want to live in a city again. I dread having to go "up country" to visit family because I really don't miss being there and as soon as I hit a motorway I can't stand it.
Everyone is different though so it depends what you want out of a city I guess.
My brother moved to Brighton recently (so that could be an option) and he loves it because the beach is on his doorstep however I prefer a sandy beach and less hustle and bustle 😊

Colorindex · 31/01/2021 14:06

There something special about being able to walk out your door and right to the see in a few minutes. We’ve swam in the sea several times a week all through Spring, Summer autumn and ❄️ winter. I never thought I’d be the kind of woman jumping in the sea in a swimsuit in January but here I am.
So much community in Brighton & Hove, and people here are literally unshockable. It’s very freeing.

theDudesmummy · 31/01/2021 14:08

We live in County Galway in Ireland. OK, Galway is not exactly a big city but in normal times there's a lot going on there. The whole coast is spectactular.

MrsGulDukat · 31/01/2021 14:08

Maldon, Essex. Beautiful town on the coast. Near to Chelmsford and Colchester.

4 bed in Maldon

LadyEloise · 31/01/2021 14:09

@BiddyPop the OP's budget is £400,000 for a 4 bed.
I don't think that's attainable in DunLaoghaire. or Malahide, Sandymount, Portmarnock or Sutton. Sad

MrsKoala · 31/01/2021 14:11

At the moment we live in what I think is a nice town halfway between London and Hastings/St Leonard’s/Bexhill. About 45mins in each direction. Which is good for us with schools and commute etc. But I’d really like to live in Canterbury, which is lovely and close to numerous nice coastal areas.
